The second annual Foundation Year Student Showcase took place last week, offering an inspiring glimpse into the incredible work being done by students.

As part of the module (FDY005 - Effective Communication), students were asked to create a presentation related to their specialist subject area. For many, public speaking can be a daunting prospect, but the Showcase proves just how far Foundation Year students come in just a few short months. From initial nerves to confidently presenting in front of an audience of 50.

Speaking about the event Laura, Archaeology and History with Foundation Year student said:

"Getting the chance to take part in the student showcase was one of the highlights of my foundation year course. The presentations were all amazing and it was great to see the hard work people had put in. I loved how supportive all the speakers were to each other, and it was lovely how much encouragement we received from our foundation year tutors. My advice for any future foundation year students is to take part in the showcase if you can, it’s really worth it!"

This year’s presentations covered a diverse and thought-provoking range of topics, including:

  • The psychology of capital punishment
  • Why London is a global metropolis in a third-world country
  • Why witches in England have animal familiars
  • The importance of EMDR and its potential for wider clinical usage.

Stephanie, English Literature with Foundation Year student, shared her experience:

"Taking part in the student showcase was a great experience. Public speaking is daunting, but I was able to share my presentation with a supportive audience, which was a real confidence boost. I also spoke to students who are a year ahead of me, which offered great insight into what to expect at undergraduate level. Finally, meeting prospective students who are considering the Foundation Year Programme led me to reflect on all that I have achieved in a short space of time thanks to the Foundation Year."

The Showcase has quickly become a highlight of the Foundation Year calendar - Here’s to many more Showcases to come!
