Anna Kalawsky, a 2025 BGU graduate, shared her journey to becoming a teacher via blended learning, on our Primary Teaching Studies with QTS course.

After previous part time study, Anna sought out the opportunity to be able to complete her degree whilst continuing to work and advance her studies in a supportive environment, in collaboration with others who shared similar experiences and goals.

That’s where BGU came in. With the support of educators who she described as “supportive, kind and knowledgeable”, Anna’s top-up degree allowed her to balance her full-time job, in a school, with her studies.

Anna said: “ The tutors took the time to get to know me personally and were always approachable and encouraging. The course was well-structured, allowing me to balance full-time work in school with my studies. Every time I visited campus, it felt welcoming and memorable, and there was a real sense of belonging.

“From taking part in PE sessions with David Wallace to tutor meetings with Sarah Howe, every experience was warm, welcoming, and filled with a real sense of community.”

Ranked 1st for Student Support in the Daily Mail University Guide 2025, Anna shared how she was supported at BGU, throughout her time as a blended learning student: “The support I received over the 16 months was truly outstanding. The tutors were always readily available and made me feel like more than just another student – they were genuinely invested in my personal growth.

“This level of support wasn’t limited to one person: all of my tutors were consistently approachable and willing to meet to offer advice and guidance whenever I needed it.”

Primary Teaching Studies with QTS at BGU is delivered via blended learning, where students are taught remotely for the equivalent of one day per week and roughly one day each half term, students attend campus for in person sessions!

Anna continued: "The blended learning approach offered by BGU was the perfect fit. Not being on campus full-time never took away from the experience. The camaraderie within our group was incredible; the way we encouraged and looked out for one another made the journey even more meaningful.

“Whether you’re on campus full-time or doing a blended course, you’ll feel part of a community that truly cares. Although I was only on campus for around five days in total, each visit left a lasting impression.”

Once completing her course, Anna secured a teaching position at her home school, with the aspiration to lead on phonics and early reading in the future - supporting children in building strong foundations for lifelong learning.

She said: “I would definitely recommend Bishop Grosseteste University to others. It’s a warm and welcoming place, with a friendly atmosphere and staff who take the time to get to know you personally.

“My advice would be to go for it! BGU is a supportive place to study and made learning feel personal, flexible, and inspiring.”
