This Spring, we are sharing a behind-the-scenes look at Education Studies: From a local field trip and departmental awards to asking the question – is the environment the ‘3rd teacher’?
Education Studies (ES): Explained
As an interdisciplinary social science, Educations Studies explores education in its broadest sense. Our programme at BGU includes modules that look at different international perspectives on education, including Emilia Regio, Steiner and Montessori approaches and the education systems in Finland and China.
Adam Hounslow-Eyre, Programme Leader for ES at BGU, explained more: “Education Studies is a great option for students who are interested in education and a potential career in teaching but potentially, aren’t quite sure of the exact career path they want to take.
“Throughout an Education Studies degree, you are able to build a great foundation of knowledge that will undoubtedly support you throughout whatever career path you choose to take.
“There is a plethora of choice when it comes to ES at BGU with eight joint honours programmes available – enabling you to cater your degree to your exact interests.
“I am proud to share some of our recent activities and achievements below and show you just some of what to expect as an Education Studies student at BGU!”
Students’ Presentations

Recently, some of our Education Studies students delivered presentations on a range of education topics, defined by their lecturers as “brilliant and constantly intriguing”.
From issues such as how the conflict in Yemen has affected education, to the impact of feminist campaigns on the education of girls in Afghanistan, delivering presentations provides students with the opportunity to streamline their study and related research to a topic of their interest.
Field trip to Thoresby Park

As part of Education Studies, the scope of online, museum/heritage and outdoor learning is also explored.
On a recent field trip to Thoresby Park, some of our students had the opportunity to explore some aspects of this, asking the question: Is the environment the ‘third teacher’?
Led by Sean Ingoldsby, Senior Lecturer in ES at BGU, alongside Keith Rider, a former BGU student and now Senior Tutor at Perlethorpe Environmental Education Centre, the students explored a sensory trail and engaged in a range of forest school activities including boat building in the river!
BGU’s Student Journal: Solertia
Two member of the Education Studies team – Dr Adam Hounslow-Eyre and Dr Sunny Dhillon, are editors of the University’s Student Journal called Solertia. Alongside Dr Sacha Mason, Head of Programmes for Education Health and Lifelong Learning, and Dr Adam Foxon, Senior Lecturer for Foundation Year, they form the editorial team who oversee the diverse contributions to the Journal – available to read here.
The latest issue includes an expanded version of an Education Studies first year student’s essay on therapeutic uses of psilocybin for mental health conditions. The article originated as an essay for an Education Studies module called The Brain, The Mind and Education.
BGSU STAR Awards

Finally, the Education Studies team, Adam Hounslow-Eyre, Amy Webster, Richard newton, Sean Ingoldsby and Sunny Dhillon, are delighted to have been nominated for and won the BGSU Student Teaching Academic Representation (STAR) Award for Department of the Year 2025.
A huge congratulations to Education Studies’ Programme Leader, Adam Hounslow-Eyre, who also won the Staff Hero Award! A huge thank you to all our students for nominating the team and to the Student Union for hosting the brilliant awards ceremony.
