Guest speakers share valuable international and cross-cultural experience with Business students
Students on the BA Business course at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) have welcomed a number of exciting guest speakers for virtual sessions that provided invaluable experience and helped bring theory to life. Over the past few weeks the students and their lecturers have embraced the unusual challenges presented by the ongoing pandemic by meeting virtually with a range of speakers including Susan Marot, whose work for ChargePoint has given her a strong background in managing teams across countries and cultures along with an understanding of employer expectations at an international level, Paula Short, who, having created her own product to bring customers to her Lincolnshire based salon, now sells across the world and Lisa Fleming who shared her experiences of launching a business during the pandemic. Karen Locking, Visiting Tutor for Business at BGU, has led on organising the speakers and she explained what made their time with the students so important: “All of the speakers we’ve welcomed recently have offered fantastic opportunities for both our students and our teaching. Their experiences give life to the theory we present to the students and show what we’re teaching is genuinely possible to achieve. For our students it not only increases their experiences but helps them to build confidence talking to, and sharing their ideas with, business professionals” Karen’s feedback was shared by Chelsea, one of the students taking part in the sessions, who discussed how they would help her in her future plans: “I really enjoyed having relevant guest speakers within this module, it really has made me feel confident with graduating with my business idea next year! Hearing and learning from real-life experts within the business industry made it a valuable experience for understanding how a business can evolve, especially during the current time.” Lauren was another student who took part, she was particularly impressed by the quality and diversity of the speakers: "I thought the guest speakers you got were very informative and equipped us with knowledge of business in the real world. I liked that you had found people not only from the UK but other countries which gave us a deeper insight into the international business environment." Business and Enterprise Centre to Re-Open with New Support Offer for Students
As the UK moves to step 3 of the roadmap out of lockdown, the BG Futures team at Bishop Grosseteste University are delighted to announce that the Business & Enterprise Centre will reopen its doors on Monday 17 May. As part of the re-opening the Centre's Student Enterprise room will be available to book for student-led groups to use. Bookings can be made for a University society, Enactus group or an individual quiet space for students to work on their enterprising idea, business start-up or volunteering position. The facilities are open to view to all students when they are next on campus. Bookings can be made by emailing jennifer.jenkins@bishopg.ac.uk a few days in advance. The room will normally be available Monday – Friday between 9am – 4.30pm Sarah Moseley, Enterprise Development Manager at BG Futures, discussed the team's motivation for opening up the facilities and what benefit they hoped students could expect: "The opening of the Business and Enterprise Centre and the return to on campus teaching has allowed us to consider how our facilities can be utilised to enrich the student journey. Access to the Enterprise room provides the perfect opportunity for small groups of students to work collaboratively, or individually in a safe space. Our centre has not been the same without the hubbub of tenants and students. Myself and the rest of the team cannot wait to welcome people back in person." Erin Bell, Bishop Grosseteste Students' Union President, shared her excitement at the opportunities on offer to the student community: "Having the Enterprise room available to students is a great opportunity for them to have somewhere they can safely and privately meet and can act as a nice introduction to the BG Futures team and give insight into the amazing support they can provide students throughout and after their time as students. It’s amazing that our campus can facilitate such a variety of social and study spaces for our many students’ individual needs, and I think making this space available will add to the collaborative and communal nature of BGU. Bishop Grosseteste University launch new hub and academy to support social economy businesses
Part of the hub’s community offer is the Greater Lincolnshire Social Economy Academy, which has been launched with support from Lincolnshire County Council and Business Lincolnshire. The academy offers a blend of practical and academic workshops delivered by a range of partners, and a series of debates and is open to charities, social enterprises, cooperatives, community groups and students. The need for an academy was identified following the development of a Greater Lincolnshire Social Economy Strategy and evidence gained from an extensive research report to unlock the full potential of the county’s people and communities. The report highlighted the benefits of social economy businesses and the challenges the sector faces. As a result, BG Futures has relaunched to focus efforts on supporting organisations which create a social impact. Based on the BGU campus, BG Futures was originally opened in 2012 as a business and enterprise centre and has supported hundreds of businesses across Greater Lincolnshire. The relaunch to focus on social enterprise demonstrates a commitment to developing a vibrant, innovative and sustainable community, particularly from those underrepresented in the business sector. The new Lincolnshire Social Economy Hub was officially opened by Ursula Lidbetter OBE, Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Co-op, in a ribbon cutting ceremony, exactly ten years after she cut the ribbon for the BG Futures centre in 2012. Ursula said: “Having a base for social enterprise is more than just a building, it’s a place to bring people together, where ideas spark and wonderful things can happen “The relaunch of the Lincolnshire Social Economy Hub will create more opportunities for social enterprise in Lincolnshire at a time when the sector needs it the most and I’m excited to see where it will lead.” The Rev Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice-Chancellor at Bishop Grosseteste University, said: “The relaunch of BG Futures as the Lincolnshire Social Economy Hub, and the launch of the brand-new Greater Lincolnshire Social Economy Academy reaffirm Bishop Grosseteste University’s commitment to supporting organisations with clear social or environmental missions. “This year is a significant milestone for the university as we celebrate our 160th anniversary and a decade since we were awarded full university status, and as an anchor institution for Lincoln we are proud to be able to support organisations that make Lincolnshire a better place to live and work.” -
Dr Abimbola Thompson
Dr Abimbola (Bola) Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in Business at Bishop Grosseteste University. Before joining BGU, Bola worked in various capacities at various institutions including Coventry University Scarborough, Cambridge Education Group - OnCampus Hull, and University of Hull. Bola began her professional journey as an assistant auditor with Akintola Williams Deloitte and Touche, upon graduation in 2002. While practising as an auditor, Bola developed a keen interest in how financial practices influence broader economic systems. Bola received her MSc in Business Economics and PhD in Economics from the University of Hull, in 2005 and 2013, respectively. The PhD research topic was on “Financial development, FDI and Economic growth: Evidence from developing countries”. Bola has worked in various roles in higher education from foundation level to postgraduate studies; this includes tutoring, lecturing, module lead, and course content developer for master’s foundation postgraduate studies. Bola’s research and learning interests include macroeconomics, international trade, human capital and economic development, Foreign direct investments (FDI) and financial development. Her contributions to the academic community are significant as she serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of International Trade & Economic Development. Bola is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an active member of several prestigious organisations, including the British Academy of Management (BAM), the Chinese Economic Association (UK &EU), the World Economics Association (WEA) and the Academy of African Business and Development (AABD). -
Skills Support and Funding
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) have received funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), to run two programmes that will improve the labour-market relevance of education and training systems. The programmes are supported by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (GLLEP). Both of these programmes will help businesses in Greater Lincolnshire to grow and develop sustainably thus boosting Greater Lincolnshire’s economy. -

Aggi Doughty
Aggi Doughty is a Senior Lecturer on the Careers Development Professional Apprenticeship within the Business Team, and a Careers Adviser at The Hub. Aggi gained an undergraduate degree in Drama from the University of Leeds in 2001 and ran her own business working as an actor, director and dramaturg for five years, before moving into careers and completing her Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Guidance (DipCG) and Level 6 in Careers Development simultaneously in 2014. She has continued to study and practice within the careers space ever since, gaining a Masters in Career Development from Nottingham Trent University in 2021. She is committed to lifelong learning, gaining her Level 6 Professional Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing in 2014. She has most recently gained a Level 2 in Youth Work Principles, and has been a Fellow of the HEA since 2020. Her research interests are around the intersection of coaching and careers, narrative in career journeys, and sociological theories of employment, specifically in relation to gender and leadership. Prior to joining BGU, Aggi held a portfolio of careers consultancy and teaching roles alongside leadership positions in Further and Higher education. Her experience is local and national in a wide variety of educational settings from alternative provision, to Independent secondary schools, to Higher Education Institutions. She has been a Careers Leader in a number of secondary schools and has gained the National Quality in Careers Standard via the Career Mark pathway from scratch for four separate institutions (and counting!). She continues to work in practice as a Career Development Professional alongside lecturing. -
Dr Ian Pownall
Dr Ian Pownall is an experienced academic researcher having started his career as a political and policy researcher in the 1990s, he then progressed through various posts including Head of Department and Director of Teaching, Learning at Hull University and more recently, associate professor at Lincoln Business School and currently has a new role of LINK tutor for the BA programmes with ICON college. Ian has eclectic teaching and research interests that include; the public sector in general, policy making, strategy, pedagogy, international business, research methods and decision making.
