  1. Federation of Small Businesses aims to help BA Business Students achieve their ambitions
    Students on the BA (Hons) Business course at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) recently enjoyed a guest lecture from David Thorpe; Development Manager at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The FSB are ‘experts in business, and offer members a wide range of vital business services including advice, financial expertise, support and a powerful voice in government. The FSB’s mission is to help smaller businesses achieve their ambitions. Currently first year BA (Hons) Business students are looking at the impact of the business environment on Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs), and how to access business support as part of their Business Fundamentals module. David’s lecture was therefore a great opportunity for the students to gain a deeper insight into what the FSB can do to support businesses, and furthermore; the structure and composition of organisations operating in the UK economy. Becky Goodman, Module Leader on the BA Business course, explained why guest lectures form an essential part of the course: “Guest lectures are a great way for students to keep up to date with what is happening in the world of business and work, especially with regard to specialist areas such as business support.” All BGU students have access to Business and Enterprise support and guidance through engaging with the onsite Business and Enterprise Centre; BG Futures.   3. BGU graduate sets up supercar charity business
    Recent Bishop Grosseteste University alum Laurent McCready is supporting important causes through fundraising efforts and charity supercar events. Initially conceived as a business venture, LincsAutoClub aims to create a community of local people with an interest in supercars – luxury and performance – as well as classic motors. Alongside Co-Founders Will Hunter, Blake Keal, Sam Fearn, and Will Johns, Education Studies graduate Laurent was keen to collaborate with other small businesses by hosting events at local coffee shops, country parks, and even the bomber command centre. After a few successful events, the team saw an opportunity to use their time and efforts to raise money for good causes. Since then, LincsAutoClub has supported a variety of charities including Cancer Research UK, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, and Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes Service. The team also like to get out and about in the local area, taking part in the annual Santa Fun Run and using money raised to provide meals to vulnerable people over winter. According to Laurent, the team is not only driven by their shared love of cars, but by their desire to give back to the local community. He said: “We have an amazing community of guests supporting LincsAutoClub who all enjoy the fundraising events. “I just want to help other people and the charity work we do enables us to see the difference we make first hand.” Click here to learn more about LincsAutoClub.
  4. BGU Ambassadors Discuss International Business during Embassy Visit
    Staff and students from the Business (Team Entrepreneurship) course at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) were invited to visit the Finnish and Hungarian Embassies in London to discuss opportunities to promote international business initiatives. Chris Jackson, Senior Lecturer and Team Coach on the TE programme, received an invitation from the Finnish Embassy via the regional Honorary Finnish Consul, Camilla Carlbom-Flinn, who is keen to promote the ongoing relationships that BGU’s Business and Enterprise team have built with Finnish organisations. Chris was joined on the visit by his academic colleague Pete Tasi along with students Daria Pipczyenka and Chris Sandham. The main topic of discussion was promoting the forthcoming Team 4 Learning (T4L) event that will be hosted at BGU next February. T4L is an international event that brings together students, team coaches and alumni connected with the Team Academy (Tiimiakatemia) programme (which forms the basis of BGU’s TE course). For next year’s event the team at BGU are planning to broaden the scope to include organisations who are now using Team Academy methods in their everyday business practice. The BGU visitors were received at the Embassy by Special Advisor Minttu Taajamo, who also invited colleagues from the Anglo-Finnish Chamber of Commerce and Business Finland. For Chris the trip offered an exciting opportunity to see representatives from BGU involved at the heart of international cooperation: “Daria and Chris did a first class job as ambassadors for BGU, and represented us well at the Embassy. This was an incredible learning opportunity for them. The Embassy were very supportive and we now need to continue discussions with them to see exactly what this support could look like in practice and how we might be able to collaborate further.” While in London, BGU’s ambassadors were also able to visit the Hungarian Embassy where they met with the Science and Technology attache, who was a colleague of Pete Tasi at the Budapest Business School. A Hungarian national, Pete has joined BGU for a year, to work on both the BA (Hons) Team Entrepreneurship and BA (Hons) Business courses. Pete discussed the positive impact this meeting could have on both the students involved and the wider BGU community: “We encourage our students to get out and meet prospects and build active networks, so it seemed crazy not to make the most of this opportunity and show them the potential of real networking. "We explained about the nature and scope of our work at BGU and it looks as if there are opportunities for us to collaborate further, which is pretty exciting.   5. International entrepreneurship conference to inspire future business leaders
    Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is set to host the 4th ‘Team 4 Learning’ event, an international conference dedicated to fostering and supporting young entrepreneurs.
  6. Business student completes placement with geocaching magazine
    Bishop Grosseteste University student, Lewis Garrett-Pughe, recently completed a placement with PinPoint, a magazine which explores the hobby of geocaching. Geocaching is a real-world GPS treasure hunt game, where players use mobile technology to find containers hidden by other players. There are over 3.5 million geocaches and 350,000 players worldwide, in every country except North Korea! BA Business student Lewis was placed with PinPoint for the final dissertation module of his programme in the spring of 2023. He was involved in a number of tasks and projects during this time, including designing a readers' feedback survey, editing and proofreading, interviewing contributors and contributing to web design. PinPoint, the UK’s only print magazine about this game, was launched in spring of 2022 following a Kickstarter campaign by two lifelong friends, Jane Spencer and Andy Wright. Jane is a professional editor, proofreader and publisher, working with authors, publishers, businesses and organisations. Andy is a BGU alum and has also held a number of roles at the university, including Careers and Employability Co-ordinator. Andy said: "It’s been an absolute pleasure having Lewis with us these past few weeks. He’s turned his hands to such a range of tasks and has challenged us to think about the way we do a few things. He’s been a great member of the team." The final day of Lewis' placement was spent at 'London Calling' a large-scale gathering in Marylebone, London, known in geocaching as a Mega Event. The convention saw players and suppliers from across the UK and several European countries gather for a day-long jamboree of puzzle-solving, litter-picking, searching and trading, as well as several social activities in the capital. Lewis was involved in selling magazines, including subscriptions, interacting with attendees, engaging with potential contributors and networking with a range of suppliers and event managers. Reflecting on his time with PinPoint, Lewis said: "I am grateful for the placement opportunity with PinPoint over the last three months. "I have learnt a lot of new skills as well as developed my existing knowledge along the way with the help of the organisation. It's great to get an insight into how a small business operates."

  8. BGU's Business Offering Goes From Strength to Strength Amidst COVID-19 Uncertainty
    Business at BGU is a rapidly growing discipline and it is hotly tipped as ‘one to watch’ by many including the regional business community who are developing their workforce’s management and leadership skills through engaging with BGUs Chartered Manager and Senior Leader Apprenticeships and all new part-time weekend MBA programme. Apprentices, leaders, and managers engaged on BGU Business programmes come from a wide variety of sectors and industries with job roles ranging from that of Talent Academy Strategic Lead / Apprenticeship Manager to Operations Directors, Children’s Health Locality Manager, Enterprise Development Manager, and Chief Operating Officers. Businesses and organisations are facing new and emerging challenges in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world and leaders must be equipped to respond. At BGU, the business programme team are keen to prepare graduates across all programmes for a changing future, and at senior level are looking to equip managers and leaders to anticipate the talent pipeline required for roles that have not yet been created due to continual advances in technology and innovation. Before Covid-19 the pace of change across the business sector was intensifying, but now more than ever an offer that serves the business community now and in the future is even more critical, therefore BGU have redesigned all of their business programmes for 2021-22.   9. Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom
    Students on the BA Business and BA Business (Team Entrepreneurship) courses at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) enjoyed a trip to Lincolnshire Co-op’s head office as part of their Business Fundamentals module.
  10. BG Futures and Lincolnshire Co-op collaborate for social enterprise event
    BG Futures & Lincolnshire Co-operative joined forces to raise awareness of the importance of social enterprises and community businesses to Greater Lincolnshire at a collaborative event. The event - “Supporting the creation of Social Enterprises and Community Businesses" - was organised by BGFutures in partnership with Lincolnshire Co-operative and hosted on Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) campus at Lincolnshire Social Economy Hub. The focus of the event, sponsored by Key Fund, was to identify the support available to individuals and organisations interested in becoming a social enterprise or community business. The event featured a panel of speakers from organisations who support the creation of community-owned enterprises. Harriet English, Head of Engagement at the Plunkett Foundation, discussed the business support available and how they can partner directly with local county councils and support bodies to help raise the profile of the community business model. Emma Laycock, Head of Co-operative Advice at Co-operatives UK, spoke about the benefits of co-operatives and how they can be used as a legal structure for social enterprises, while Dave Thornett, Business Development Manager at Key Fund, outlined the different types of social enterprises and legal structures. Allison Webb, Director of External Engagement at Bishop Grosseteste University, shared insights into BGU's involvement in the sector including the recent development of a social economy hub and academy. She also announced the exciting launch of Greater Lincolnshire as a Social Enterprise Place, which will see local authorities, organisations and enterprises coming together to promote the growth of the sector in Greater Lincolnshire. Allison said the event was a great opportunity to work collectively. She said: "It was really inspiring to see the collective enthusiasm and support available to aspiring enterprises. The event helped us raise awareness and equip attendees with the skills required to support individuals interested in exploring these business models. "We're excited to move forward with our launch of Greater Lincolnshire as a Social Enterprise Place and identify more ways we can make real, impactful change for individuals and community businesses. "The development of these enterprises is so important because they offer a direct response to the wants and needs of the local communities they serve.
