Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) recently hosted a free BGU Sports Day Project as a way to give back to the community. The University welcomed a large number of children from local schools to the Sports Centre and outside grounds, providing them with exciting activities and ways to get moving through exercise.
Around 500 students from St Peter in Eastgate, Westgate, Sturton by Stow, Monks Abbey, St Faiths Infants, and Ermine Academy were welcomed onto BGU's campus during the week. The session provided a free opportunity for local children to get involved and experience team work in a sports environment.
The event featured a variety of sports activities including long jump, hurdles, and relay races. The volunteers who contributed to the Sports Day Project included Initial Teacher Education (ITE) trainees, staff volunteers, ITE academics, and representatives from the Sports Centre.
By opening its doors to children from neighbouring schools, BGU demonstrated its commitment to promoting physical well-being and active lifestyles among the younger generation. Samuel Willis-Dixon, Senior Placements Administrator, said:
"I’m thrilled with the success of this year’s school sports event. What started as a small project has grown into a significant community initiative. It was heart-warming to see so many enthusiastic children on campus and to work alongside our dedicated students and staff. The opportunity to provide local schools with a fun and enriching sports day, purely through volunteer efforts, was incredibly rewarding. Meeting future educators and seeing their passion first-hand was truly inspiring."
