Dr Alan Malpass, Senior Lecturer of Military History at Bishop Grosseteste University, was recently invited to share his expertise at a UK-Ukraine Roundtable at the Houses of Parliament.
Focused on the treatment of Ukrainian and British prisoners of war (POW) held in Russian captivity, the event was organised by UABeyond, and held on Tuesday 8th July 2025.
Chaired by Lord Maurice Glasman, the roundtable featured key voices from Ukraine’s political and human rights sectors including, Oleg Hushchyn (Coordination HQ for POWs, Kyiv), Oleksandra Matviichuk (Centre for Civil Liberties), and Dmytro Donskoy (Ukrainian Defence & Air Force Attaché). Shaun Pinner and John Harding shared details of their experiences of Russian captivity, whilst the audience included Members of Parliament, human rights advocates, and members of the media.
Dr Malpass provided expert insight into the treatment of POWs in the past, specifically British treatment of Italian and German POWs during and after the Second World War and provided historical context to current Russian practices. He said: “It was an honour to attend the roundtable. Hearing first-hand accounts of Russian captivity and the inhumane conditions faced by Ukrainian and British POWs was deeply moving.
“Former prisoners often find it difficult to discuss their experiences – I’m grateful to Shaun Pinner and John Harding for doing so. Historically, POWs were overlooked in studies of war and I’m heartened that UABeyond is committed to ensuring their voices are heard and the issue of POW treatment is not ignored.”
Viktoriya Kiose, the Director of UABeyond, who invited Dr Malpass to attend the roundtable, thanked him for his involvement: “Alan was an absolutely invaluable presence at the event. We’re truly grateful for his contribution to such an important and timely discussion. His insights, delivered with such clarity and professionalism, brought depth to the conversation and helped highlight the broader significance of the issue”.
The roundtable concluded with a powerful call to action and ongoing commitment to improving the conditions for POWs and protecting their fundamental rights.
