Professor Caroline Horton
Caroline joined BGU in April 2015. She is Professor of Sleep and Cognition, where she is director of the DrEAMSLab, Chair of BGU’s Research Ethics Committee, Lead for the Psychology, Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange Unit, and REF lead for Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience (UoA 4A) for BGU. Caroline contributes to the undergraduate BA Psychology courses, having previous programme led the courses, as well as the PhD programme. (see: www.dreamslab.co.uk / @sleepandmemory). More widely, Caroline is the Co-Director of the Lincoln Sleep Research Centre (LiSReC), the Treasurer and Trustee of the British Sleep Society, an elected committee member of the Cognitive Section of the British Psychological Society, where she is also a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol), and a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams Research Board. As a Committee member for the BPS’ Division of Health Psychology, Caroline is Co-Editor of the Health Psychology Update. Caroline is affiliated to research groups at the University of Lincoln, and Swinburne University, Australia. Caroline is a regular reviewer for several academic journals, a renowned expert in sleep, dreaming and memory, as well as on the Editorial Board for Sleep Psychology, and two of the Frontiers in Psychology journals. Caroline has been an external examiner at the University of Edinburgh (2019-2023; MSc Psychology of Mental Health) and is currently an examiner at the University of Derby (Psychology MRes) and Newman University (MSc Psychology (conversion)) and has externally examined several research degrees. Before joining BGU, Caroline obtained her undergraduate (2003) and Master's (2004) degrees in Psychology from the University of Durham, her PhD from the Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds (2007), and a PGCHE from Leeds Metropolitan University (2008). Caroline has taught at the Universities of Durham and Leeds as well as the Open University, and predominantly at Leeds Metropolitan University where she was a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer (2007-2015). Caroline’s research interests principally span the fields of sleep, dreaming, and memory, and the relationships between those concepts. She has pioneered and developed the Sleep Well programme, a behavioural sleep improvement programme, which is being rolled out to various populations, including young adults with anxiety, and people living with diabetes. Caroline regularly features in the media, on BBC radio shows and international podcasts. She is the founder and host of the Sleep Science Pod. -
Dr Nyree-Anne Nicholson
Programme Leader - Professional Studies Nyree Nicholson is the Programme Leader for the Professional Studies team, and teaches across the three pathways on the Professional Studies Foundation, Honours and Master’s Degrees. She joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2015. Prior to this Nyree worked as a Programme Leader within another Higher Education intuition. Nyree worked with the Early Years Sector for eleven years also working as a foster carer for twenty years. Teaching Nyree teaches on the Foundation, Honours and Master’s Degrees across the Professional Studies pathways. Her teaching interests include all aspects of early childhood development. Nyree has a particular interest in Early Years research, collaborative practice, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and the Early Years Practitioner’s role planning and assessment within the Early Years Foundation Stage. Nyree is also interested in how the practitioner develops their own professional identity through experience and education. -
Martin Smith
Martin Smith joined BGU in 2016 and is the technician for Psychology. His main role is supporting staff and students with using the variety of Psychology equipment we have available in the department, such as the virtual reality headset and BIOPAC devices. Martin delivers a number of practical sessions across the degree to help support student understanding of psychological concepts. Martin also co-ordinates the SONA system, which is used to help advertise staff and student research projects. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Lincoln and completed a Research Master's looking at using Virtual Reality as a means of investigating how we use language for objects that are in motion. Martin is part of the Psychology, Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange unit, where he offers additional technical support for other members of the unit. -
Dr Derwin Gregory
Associate Professor of Conflict ArchaeologyProgramme Leader, Archaeology, Military History, and Heritage derwin.gregory@bishopg.ac.uk Dr Derwin Gregory specialises in post-medieval landscapes and modern conflict archaeology. He has undertaken research projects on the archaeology of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the United States Army Air Force (USAAF). Following excavations at a Second World War airfield, during which he uncovered evidence of personal acts of memorialisation, he has become particularly interested in the link between material culture and wellbeing within the armed forces. Samantha Hoyes
Samantha has been teaching at Bishop Grosseteste University since 2012, initially as a visiting tutor and as a full-time member of staff from 2020. Prior to joining BGU full time, she has worked in a variety of early years settings, as well as managing and co-owning two early years settings in Lincolnshire. Samantha also has experience inspecting early years provision. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is currently undertaking her PhD. Her PhD research focuses on the experiences of working mothers and how they position their identity. Samantha has a keen interest in the power dynamics involved in research, exploring a range of methods and approaches, including photo elicitation, online interviewing and quilting as ways and means to share power and present research findings. Samantha teaches on the undergraduate Early Childhood Studies programme and teaching interests include policy, provision and practice, outdoor play, children’s rights, and risky play, as well as an array of contemporary issues which impact the sector. Building on research from her Master's, Samantha has a strong interest in early years professionalism and the continued development of the early years sector and is Co-Chair for the Professionalism and Workforce Strategy group (PAWS) as part of the Early Childhood Studies Degree Network (ECSDN). -
Bishop Grosseteste University announced as a partner for Imperial War Museums’ £2.5m art commissioning programme Call for Veterans
The project being led by BGU invites serving and former members of the British Armed Forces who were deployed to Afghanistan to group art therapy workshops. In these sessions, veterans will explore what ‘home’ meant to them whilst serving in operating bases in Afghanistan and what it means to them now. A professional artist will be commissioned to work alongside the project team to create artwork that draws inspiration from the veterans’ experiences. Combined with the veterans’ art, the commissioned artwork will form part of a major new contemporary art exhibition that will explore the personal stories of the conflict in Afghanistan. As part of our wider research project, the team would also like to speak to any serving or former members of the British Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and are interested in sharing their experiences of operating bases. Building on over 100 years of contemporary art commissioning by IWM, this new initiative continues the vision and reach of 14-18 NOW, the official UK arts programme for the First World War centenary, and has been made possible thanks to the success of Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed film They Shall Not Grow Old, co-commissioned by IWM and 14-18 NOW. A share of the film’s royalties – £2.5 million – will see investment in artists and arts experiences as IWM partners with 20 cultural organisations and 22 artists from across the UK. The fully funded commissions will each be inspired by the heritage of conflict. Dr Derwin Gregory, Programme Leader for Archaeology and Heritage of BGU, says: “I am excited to be working with serving and former members of the British Armed Forces, in partnership with IWM, to create a major contemporary art exhibition that will allow veterans the opportunity to share their stories of life within operating bases in Afghanistan”. Diane Lees, Director-General of IWM, says: “IWM is delighted to be working in close partnership with such a breadth of UK organisations on this ambitious programme of art commissioning. After a challenging couple of years for the arts sector, we hope that the unprecedented opportunities enabled by the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund will kick-start cultural dialogue as we recover from the wide-reaching impacts of COVID-19”. Dr Sunny Dhillon
Prior to joining the Education Studies team in November 2021, Sunny spent five years as a learning developer at the University of Leeds, as well as at BGU, where he also worked as a Visiting Tutor in the Theology, Ethics and Society department. Sunny conducted his doctoral research through the Philosophy department at Cardiff University, focussing on the concept of utopia through the works of Friedrich W. Nietzsche, Ernst Bloch and Theodor W. Adorno. Sunny’s research interests include Critical Theory (The Frankfurt School), Nietzsche, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Utopia and Philosophy of Education. His current research projects critically explore education as ontotheological principle, and student engagement from the perspective of academics in the social sciences who often experience a ‘disclosure dilemma’ when deciding what perspectives to share with students across levels of HE. Sean Ingoldsby
Sean Ingoldsby has extensive experience of teaching in early years and primary school settings, and in tertiary education both in the UK and overseas. Over the course of his career, he has taken on a wide range of coordination and leadership roles including early years coordinator and primary SENCO positions and more recently, on a variety of undergraduate teacher training programmes specialising in, Early Childhood Education, Educational Technology and TESOL, each of which is leveraged in his teaching on the BA Education Studies programme. Sean currently leads modules on inclusion and diversity, the impact of context in the learning process, and of diverse perspectives on education on both national and global policy and practice, and educational research. His research interests include the impact of context on learning, embodied cognition and educational technology.
