Martin Smith
Martin Smith joined BGU in 2016 and is the technician for Psychology. His main role is supporting staff and students with using the variety of Psychology equipment we have available in the department, such as the virtual reality headset and BIOPAC devices. Martin delivers a number of practical sessions across the degree to help support student understanding of psychological concepts. Martin also co-ordinates the SONA system, which is used to help advertise staff and student research projects. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Lincoln and completed a Research Master's looking at using Virtual Reality as a means of investigating how we use language for objects that are in motion. Martin is part of the Psychology, Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange unit, where he offers additional technical support for other members of the unit. -

BGU is committed to supporting you as you transition to the school workplace; we want to continue to work with you during these formative years. Your school mentor and tutor will provide guidance and support, including coaching and mentoring, for your professional development. However, remember that as early career teachers, BGU is still here to support you with aspects of your teaching activity. For example, advice on behaviour management or subject knowledge and pedagogy. The recently developed Early Career Framework offers a structured programme of development, support, and professional dialogue. This programme provides a set of materials which cover the five core areas of the ECF. These are Behaviour Management, Pedagogy, Curriculum, Assessment and Professional Behaviours. Student turns troubles into truffles during lockdown
During the Spring Lockdown Becca Taylor, a first year BA (Hons) Sociology student at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), thought that baking cakes for her family and friends might give them something to smile about. Little did she know that this would sow the seed for a lucrative business venture. As Becca explains, her plans looked like they might fall at the first hurdle: "I went to buy ingredients and found the shelves empty of flour and eggs but I still wanted to send a gift to our families as we couldn’t see them much" Undeterred Becca realised she could buy what was needed to make truffle treats instead. After positive feedback and a request to make more Becca experimented, tasted and tested and before she knew it 'Taylor’d Truffles' was born. As we enter Global Entrepreneurship week, the world’s biggest celebration of entrepreneurship, Sarah Moseley, Enterprise Development Manager within BG Futures caught up with Becca. When asked what key piece of advice she had for BGU students with fledgling enterprises, Becca said: "Do your research first. It pays off to get everything you need together such as registrations, paperwork etc. all the boring stuff done and ready for opening. It makes the process much more organised and professional. Ideally, post-graduation, I would like the business to have grown and be successful enough for it to be run on a full-time basis." Last month Taylor’d truffles received the highest-level Food Hygiene Rating meaning customers can order with confidence that all food safety and hygiene guidelines are followed. Taylor’d Truffles have seen an increase in orders since Lockdown 2.0 and are now taking preorders for Christmas which will be dispatched using Royal Mails first class service. Religion’s Impact on Racial Equality Explored as Winner Announced for 2020 Robert Grosseteste Essay Prize
Daniel Hole, of Burgate Sixth Form, has been announced as the winner of Bishop Grosseteste University’s (BGU) Robert Grosseteste Essay Prize 2020. The competition, in honour of Robert Grosseteste (1167-1253), namesake of BGU, bishop, philosopher, scientist and translator and the first chancellor of Oxford University, challenges entrants to apply the study of Theology and Philosophy relevant to the issues of our age. Entrants were invited to submit papers exploring ‘Is Religion a help or a hinderance when it comes to the issue of racial equality?’ with particular reference to the Black Lives Matter movement. Daniel’s paper, titled ‘God is my Judge’, proposed that rather than a hindrance, Religion could serve as a cure for racial inequality and was picked by judging panel out of a wide selection of entries. As winner Daniel will receive a £250 cash prize as well as a hardback signed copy of Robert Grosseteste and Theories of Education; the Ordered Human, eds Jack P. Cunningham & Steven Puttick. Speaking after the announcement, Daniel explained what drew him to the competition and discussed his plans for the future: “Ever since I was young I have had a passion for problem solving and at the age of 15 this flourished for me in my dive into Philosophy and Theology. Since then I have been on a relentless development of my intellect. I am a current student at Burgate Sixth Form and I am studying A Levels in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Sociology and Politics with an EPQ in the subject of 'Sola Scriptura. My aspirations for the future are to write books on the subject from thoughts I have accumulated over the years and to next year begin a Bachelors in Philosophy, with subsequent plans of earning Master's and Doctorates in Theology and Religion.” You can read Daniel’s essay in full by clicking here. The judges also gave special recognition to runner up Alys Evans, of Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg, who argued that, due to existence and impact of religious extremism, religion could not be defined as a help in racial equality. Alys also shared her plans for the future: “I am applying for a degree in Law and hope to attend Bristol University next year. Student Aiming to Set the Racing World on Fire with Once in a Lifetime Opportunity
Becca Taylor, first year BA (Hons) Sociology student at Bishop Grosseteste University, is aiming to become the next racing legend by entering the Formula Woman driving competition. Formula Woman is a driving competition for women with little to no racing experience, with the grand prize of a fully sponsored 2022 race season in a McLaren GT4. It originated in 2004, where it was also televised on ITV. Speaking ahead of the competition Becca discussed her motivations and along with the upcoming challenges she’d be facing: “This really is that once in a lifetime opportunity.” “I’ve been into cars ever since I was younger when I was obsessed with my Dad’s old Porsche. When I passed my test I made the most of driving, but just under 2 years ago, I was introduced to Lotus by my partner and that is when I fell truly in love with racing and track driving. So much so I had to buy myself one! It has been from there, that my love for that style of driving, including skills such as heel toe, cornering techniques etc. really grew into what it is today.” “Since applying for Formula Women, I have been training hard ready for the first assessments in the Autumn, through strength & fitness, media presence and improving my driving capabilities and knowledge. Rachel Linstead
Rachel joined BGU in 2021 as a Lecturer in Business and Enterprise. Alongside this role Rachel runs a successful consultancy business specialising in workplace culture and wellbeing. Rachel holds an MSc in workplace health and wellbeing and is a qualified nutritionist and business coach and mentor. Rachel’s main research interests include workplace culture, leadership and management, high performing teams and workplace health and wellbeing. Rachel has successfully ran two workplace health and wellbeing conferences and has spoken at both national and international conferences on the subject of nutrition and its impact on both workplace performance and mental health. Rachel teaches on the undergraduate BA (Hons) Business programme and the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship. Rachel's teaching specialisms include leadership and management, organisational psychology and sociology, business start-up and Leadership for a changing world. -
Dr Amanda Arbouin
Dr Amanda Arbouin joined Bishop Grosseteste University as an Honorary Senior Fellow in Education Studies in August 2021. She has expertise in the Sociology of Education, with a particular focus on the effects of race, class and gender in education and employment.
