Reverend Dr Tania ap Siôn
The Revd Dr Tania ap Siôn is Reader of Religions, Humanities and Education, and joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2018. She holds a BA and MA in Theology from Oxford University, an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Wales, Bangor, and a PhD in Education (focusing on theology, psychology and education) from the University of Warwick. Tania’s academic research has a strong relationship with professional practice in church-related, school-related, and community-related contexts. This is underpinned by the professional qualification of PGCE in Religious Studies, ordination as an Anglican priest in the Church in Wales, active membership of national and international organisations concerned with religion in schools, and the position of Executive Director of the St Mary’s Centre (a Christian research institute in Wales). Previously, Tania has held academic posts at Bangor University (1994-2007), Glyndwr University Wrexham (2011-2015), and the University of Warwick (2015-2018). Funded by the Wrexham (Parochial) Educational Foundation in partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University, since October 2020 Tania has been working on the St Giles’ Centre Research, Development and Impact Project in Religious Education, which is an exciting and innovative development taking place in the Wrexham County Borough, North East Wales. -
Revd Prof Jeff Astley
Jeff Astley holds the part-time post of Alister Hardy Professor of Religious and Spiritual Experience. His main research interests are religious and spiritual experiences, Christian formation and ‘ordinary theology’. He is currently working on a research project jointly with the University of Warwick and Boston University, USA. For four years (1977-1981) Jeff was Head of Religious Studies at Bishop Grosseteste College and Associate Tutor at Lincoln Theological College, overseeing a joint degree programme taught at both institutions. From 1981 to 2013, he was the founding Director of the North of England Institute for Christian Education, an independent, ecumenical research and development centre (https://neice.webspace.durham.ac.uk/) with strong links with Durham University where he taught on courses in philosophical theology, science and religion and practical theology, and where he is also an honorary Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion. Jeff studied biological sciences and theology as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, and did postgraduate work in theology at Birmingham University and Durham University (where he received his PhD). He is the author or editor of over 40 books and 150 articles or essays on religious faith, experience and formation; philosophical, systematic, ordinary and practical theology; and various related issues in Christian education and spirituality. -
Dr Sacha Mason
Sacha is Head of Programmes for Education, Health and Lifelong Learning. The role includes the strategic leadership and management of programme development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Early Childhood Studies, Education Studies, Professional Studies, and Special Educational Needs Disability and Inclusion, Psychology, Counselling, Health and Social Care and Sport within the Faculty. She is also Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange and a Senior Fellow of the HEA. Sacha is a Doctoral supervisor. -
Dr Erik Grigg
Lecturer in History erik.grigg@bishopg.ac.uk I have a wide background in teaching both academically and in the heritage sector (in museums and castles). My primary focus is early medieval Britain, but I also take an interest in the Home Guard, Magna Carta, the Cornish language, the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Vikings, Forest Law and warfare in history. Dr Alan Malpass
Senior Lecturer – Military History alan.malpass@bishopg.ac.uk Dr Alan Malpass is a historian who specialises in 20th century military history, particularly civilian internment and prisoners of war. Before joining in 2019, Alan taught at Sheffield Hallam University, where he completed his PhD. Alan teaches a range of modules across the History and Military History courses. Inspired to study history by playing a lot of board/computer games, Alan incorporates them into his teaching at every opportunity. Louise Connolly
Louise has established a career in education over the last 24 years. Having previously worked with the University as a Visiting Tutor for three years before joining the team permanently, Louise joined Bishop Grosseteste University in September 2020 in a permanent role as a Senior Lecturer in Initial Primary Teacher Education where she now works on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Louise leads academic writing, research modules and also supervises masters students through their dissertations. Prior to joining the university academic team, Louise was a teacher in primary schools for nearly 20 years. Throughout her time in school, she carried out a number of roles such as Foundation and Key Stage One Leader, English Lead, History Lead and was also a Special Educational Needs Coordinator for 15 years. She later became a Head Teacher of a large primary school in a deprived area in Nottinghamshire and was also the Safeguarding Lead and Special Educational Needs Coordinator for a Multi-Academy Trust.Louise completed a Masters in Education in 2019 and predominantly focused on areas of Special Educational Needs and Emotional Health. Louise achieved Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy in 2021 and is in the final stages of her PhD where her topic of interest is around worry and wellbeing in undergraduate student teachers. She is a review editor for an educational journal and also an external examiner for Initial Teacher Education at another university. Louise also enjoys a role as a Primary School Governor in a local school. Louise has previously written articles on educational areas of interest in the TES and other educational magazines. She had her first book published by Sage in 2022 in their Super Quick Skills series about proofreading essays and also recently had an article approved for publication by The Teacher Education Advancement Network (TEAN). -
Katie Furnival
Katie joined BGU in September 2020. During her teaching career, Katie taught in a range of schools in different parts of the UK, teaching every year group across the primary range. She has been responsible for many curriculum areas, including English, SEN, ITT and Art and also has been a member of SLT as a KS2 leader. In addition, Katie has been a Director of Learning for a large academy trust in the North of England. She provided modelled teaching, pedagogical leadership and professional development to colleagues in order to develop teaching and learning. She has also researched and developed a new approach to Feedforward marking; a method embraced by 32 schools. Katie has SLE (Specialist Leader of Education) status for ITE, support for the most able and English and is a trained KS2 writing moderator for Doncaster Council. She has previously been a guest lecturer at another HEI and enjoyed delivering a workshop at the Festival of Education in Sheffield. -
Professor Julian Stern
Professor of Education and Religion julian.stern@bishopg.ac.uk Julian Stern works on education and religion, leading research projects and organisations, and supervising doctorates. He qualified as a piano teacher, and then as a teacher of humanities and social sciences, and was a school teacher for fourteen years. Moving into teacher education and research, he has worked in universities in London, Yorkshire, and now Lincolnshire. Themes of his work include the philosophy of schooling, religious education, spirituality in education, research methods, and issues related to solitude, silence and loneliness. Dr Joanna Wilson-Scott, FHEA
Joanna Wilson-Scott is a Visiting Lecturer in English at Bishop Grosseteste University, having joined the department in January 2019. She obtained her PhD with scholarship from the University of Leicester in 2018, after which she was awarded a postdoctoral visiting research fellowship at the Rothermere American Institute at the University of Oxford. Joanna is a specialist in twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature with a particular focus on Australian and American novels. Her current research, which was awarded the VRF at the RAI, is on the lived experiences and domestic effects of climate change, exploring solastalgia, perforated landscapes, and the loss of the home, and she has presented aspects of this research at the University of Tasmania in Australia, Turku University in Finland, and the University of Nottingham, with papers forthcoming at conferences at Ghent University and Loughborough University. Jonny Statham
Jonny joined BGU in 2021 as a Senior Lecturer in Business and Enterprise, having previously worked as the Business Programme lead and People Development Manager at a private apprenticeship provider. His work history includes a variety of roles, including running his own training delivery business, working as an Area Manager for Aldi and as an IT Project Manager for AVIVA. However, for the majority of his career he was a Training Officer in the RAF, spending most of his time at the RAF Officer College, as the Senior Leadership Instructor and then latterly running the Course Design Team.He holds a BA (Hons) in Business Management and whilst working at the RAF Officer College he completed his MSc in Personal, Executive and Business Coaching. His teaching specialisms are mainly in the fields of Leadership & Management and Coaching & Mentoring. Jonny has also recently developed an interest in Digital Transformation.In addition to his position at BGU, Jonny also supports two family-run businesses with his wife.
