Guernsey placement success for pGDE trainees
Bishop Grosseteste University students on pGDE courses (Professional Graduate Diploma in Education) in Sport, Performing Arts, Plumbing, Health and Social Care, Childcare, English and Engineering undertook a placement for a week at the Guernsey College of Further Education. All trainees on the programme have one main placement and the Guernsey visit was to enable them to see another setting beyond their own and also to show them different education system to BGU's. Guernsey was an experience that we would not of missed - it gave us an insight into the lifestyle of another teaching environment. We were made very welcome and as such were able to enjoy the culture and social experience. As a group it gave us the opportunity to bond and engage with fellow teacher trainers. Roger, pGDE student Guernsey College staff will be coming to the UK in the future for a reciprocal visit, where staff have arranged for them to spend some time in Further Education colleges where our trainees are based and a day at BGU. Input was provided to the colleges Continuing Professional Development (CPD) during the time trainees were with them on placement. This gave Guernsey an opportunity to develop relationships with trainees to fill any potential vacancies they have. This opportunity has allowed me to develop my skills as a facilitator. Working with the performing arts department in an environment that's so different from my current placement gave me great inspiration for carrying on my teaching practice. MA student awarded scholarship
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) student Daniel Kuu-Erah who is studying an MA in Education and TESOL, recently received a GREAT Scholarship funded by the British Council and the UK Government’s GREAT British Campaign to study at BGU! When Daniel returned from a network event held in Birmingham (Edgbaston Stadium) for all GREAT scholars, he couldn't wait to tell everyone about it. It was an amazing programme, and an opportunity for me to meet great personalities from the UK and other parts of the world! Daniel Kuu-Erah Sophie Hadfield who is the BGU International Support Officer said: He showed me his GREAT Scholarship certificate and told me about the inspiring former GREAT scholars he met, as well as several dignitaries. As he progresses his dissertation, Daniel continues to consider his future next steps – he has been applying to undertake a PhD specialising in linguistic discourse analysis. Daniel is keen to see further promotion of BGU in Ghana as he would like other potential students benefit from the same positive educational experience he has received so far from BGU. -
Paul Staples
Paul has a wide range of experience across the education and youth work sectors. His most recent position was as a curriculum lead for Higher Education courses in an FE college. Paul has worked for several third sector and education organisations, including the Prince’s Trust and Lincolnshire County Council. Paul has experience of managing education settings including alternative education and supporting NEET young people in deprived areas of the county. Academically Paul undertook the Applied Studies in Children and Youth Work BA (Hons) at Bishop Grosseteste and gained a 1st class honours degree with JNC, and then went on to complete a Masters in Education at BGU. -

Psychology and Sport

Professor Caroline Horton
Caroline joined BGU in April 2015. She is Professor of Sleep and Cognition, where she is director of the DrEAMSLab, Chair of BGU’s Research Ethics Committee, Lead for the Psychology, Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange Unit, and REF lead for Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience (UoA 4A) for BGU. Caroline contributes to the undergraduate BA Psychology courses, having previous programme led the courses, as well as the PhD programme. (see: www.dreamslab.co.uk / @sleepandmemory). More widely, Caroline is the Co-Director of the Lincoln Sleep Research Centre (LiSReC), the Treasurer and Trustee of the British Sleep Society, an elected committee member of the Cognitive Section of the British Psychological Society, where she is also a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol), and a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams Research Board. As a Committee member for the BPS’ Division of Health Psychology, Caroline is Co-Editor of the Health Psychology Update. Caroline is affiliated to research groups at the University of Lincoln, and Swinburne University, Australia. Caroline is a regular reviewer for several academic journals, a renowned expert in sleep, dreaming and memory, as well as on the Editorial Board for Sleep Psychology, and two of the Frontiers in Psychology journals. Caroline has been an external examiner at the University of Edinburgh (2019-2023; MSc Psychology of Mental Health) and is currently an examiner at the University of Derby (Psychology MRes) and Newman University (MSc Psychology (conversion)) and has externally examined several research degrees. Before joining BGU, Caroline obtained her undergraduate (2003) and Master's (2004) degrees in Psychology from the University of Durham, her PhD from the Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds (2007), and a PGCHE from Leeds Metropolitan University (2008). Caroline has taught at the Universities of Durham and Leeds as well as the Open University, and predominantly at Leeds Metropolitan University where she was a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer (2007-2015). Caroline’s research interests principally span the fields of sleep, dreaming, and memory, and the relationships between those concepts. She has pioneered and developed the Sleep Well programme, a behavioural sleep improvement programme, which is being rolled out to various populations, including young adults with anxiety, and people living with diabetes. Caroline regularly features in the media, on BBC radio shows and international podcasts. She is the founder and host of the Sleep Science Pod. -
Dr Martin Huggon
Martin Huggon is a Lecturer in Archaeology and Heritage, particularly specialised in field archaeology and medieval archaeology. After spending 5 years in commercial archaeology he gained his PhD at the University of Sheffield, researching the archaeology of medieval hospitals in England and Wales, after which he began teaching archaeology at Bishop Grosseteste from 2017 onwards, initially as a Visiting and then Associate Tutor, before being made a lecturer in 2020. He is also editor of the journal Church Archaeology. His current research interests are focused upon the archaeology of later medieval religion, in particular monasteries, hospitals, friaries, and nunneries. Associated with this is a current research project on the military orders in the British Isles and Ireland, with the aim of carrying out field survey and excavation on sites across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. He is also writing up excavations at Sulgrave Castle, one of the important Five Castle sites from across England. -
Dr Matthew Dunn
Matt is Head of Initial Teacher Education Programmes, with a portfolio encompassing primary, secondary and further education age phases. His portfolio also covers postgraduate taught programmes for teachers such as the MA Education and international distance learning programmes, including the iPGCE and MA International Education. Matt is also Associate Dean (Admissions) with a cross-Faculty remit for liaison between the Faculty Executive Group and the university’s Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions teams.
