Leanne Leverton
Leanne teaches the BSc and MA Health and Social Care degrees at BGU. Leanne's background within practice was Health Visiting Practice with a specialist qualification in Community Public Health Nursing and Practice Education. She is also a registered paediatric nurse. Leanne has delivered education and training within the specialist field and public health community nursing for 10 years bringing considerable healthcare experience and Knowledge to the Health and Social Care programmes. -
Dr Abimbola Thompson
Dr Abimbola (Bola) Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in Business at Bishop Grosseteste University. Before joining BGU, Bola worked in various capacities at various institutions including Coventry University Scarborough, Cambridge Education Group - OnCampus Hull, and University of Hull. Bola began her professional journey as an assistant auditor with Akintola Williams Deloitte and Touche, upon graduation in 2002. While practising as an auditor, Bola developed a keen interest in how financial practices influence broader economic systems. Bola received her MSc in Business Economics and PhD in Economics from the University of Hull, in 2005 and 2013, respectively. The PhD research topic was on “Financial development, FDI and Economic growth: Evidence from developing countries”. Bola has worked in various roles in higher education from foundation level to postgraduate studies; this includes tutoring, lecturing, module lead, and course content developer for master’s foundation postgraduate studies. Bola’s research and learning interests include macroeconomics, international trade, human capital and economic development, Foreign direct investments (FDI) and financial development. Her contributions to the academic community are significant as she serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of International Trade & Economic Development. Bola is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an active member of several prestigious organisations, including the British Academy of Management (BAM), the Chinese Economic Association (UK &EU), the World Economics Association (WEA) and the Academy of African Business and Development (AABD). -
Kimberley Edwards
Kimberley joined BGU in February 2023 after being a Head of History and teaching history at a variety of schools across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire for over a decade. Kimberley has worked with a range of different schools and departments, supporting both humanities and history teams through her role as a Specialist Leader in Education. For this role Kimberley specialised in improving teaching and learning within classrooms. Kimberley has also mentored and coached several teaching trainees across her career. Kimberley has also worked as an External Examiner and Team Leader for a large exam board within the UK, ensuring consistency across marking. Gillian Johnston
Gillian joined BGU in October 2022 as a Sociology/Criminology lecturer. Her current role is Programme Leader for both the BA (Hons) Sociology and BA (Hons) Criminology programmes. Gillian played a pivotal role in developing the recently validated BA (Hons) Criminology programme. Gillian’s qualifications span both disciplines. She graduated from the University of Lincoln with a BA (Hons) Social Science degree and later graduated from Keele University with an MA in Criminology and Research Methods. She is currently undertaking an EdD. Her area of interest and the topic of her thesis is related to class, gender and Higher Education. The aim of her research is to examine the impact that social background and gender may have on mature working-class women whilst on their Higher Education learning journey. The working title of her research: Exploring the inner worlds of mature working-class women on their journey through Higher Education. Gillian’s criminological interest is with punishment and prisons. She has gained extensive practical skills through her volunteering experiences with several local organisations that offer support to offenders in the prison environment and ex-offenders in the community. Tom Dannatt
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Operations) Tom Dannatt has overall responsibility for the majority of all non-academic operations, including Finance, Human Resources, Estates and Marketing. Tom has extensive experience of financial and resources leadership within the education sector, including strategic financial and resources planning, international partnerships, infrastructure and capital projects, risk management and business development across operations in the UK, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and China. Prior to joining BGU, Tom held senior roles within, amongst others, The Lincoln College Group, Lincolnshire NHS Trust (Chair of the Audit Committee), Franklin College in Grimsby, Grimsby Institute of FE&HE. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management, and a Member of the Institute of Directors. -
Scott Fleming
Emeritus Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies Scott Fleming has a long-standing interest in ‘race relations’ and youth studies which form part of a wider portfolio of research linked to equality and diversity. His work embraces the social sciences and humanities, and some recent projects have been concerned with organisational cultures and aspects of sport development linked to public health. Throughout his career, he has maintained an interest in research methods and research ethics. A former Chair of the Leisure Studies Association (2004-2009), Scott was a Managing Editor of Leisure Studies (2010-2016) and is a member of the Editorial Board of The Sport Psychologist. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and of the Higher Education Academy. From January 2019 to December 2023 Scott was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at Bishop Grosseteste University. Prior to that he had held posts at Cardiff Metropolitan University (1994-1999 and 2005-2018), University of Gloucestershire (1999-2005) and University of Brighton (1989-1994). Scott was also a member of the Research Excellence Framework 2021 Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel and of the Athena Swan Governance Committee. He is a current Chair for Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter panels. -
Dr Darren Poole
Dr Darren Poole is a lecturer in Military History at Bishop Grosseteste University. He holds a Ph.D. in Military History from the University of Chester. In addition to his History qualifications, he also has degrees in Geography, Education and Management. Before joining BGU, Darren taught History at both the University of Chester and University Centre, Shrewsbury. At Chester and Shrewsbury, he taught all aspects of Military History and also supported learners who were new to Higher Education, including international students joining English universities for the first time. Prior to becoming a lecturer, Darren was a Head of History and Geography in secondary schools across England. He still retains links to schools and education. His research interests include aerial warfare, counterinsurgency and the voices of the oppressed and ignored in conflict. He is particularly committed to promoting the ‘unheard’ voices of war i.e. those civilians neglected by conventional military accounts of combat. Darren is a published author and is currently working on a book examining the underreported violence that terrorists often inflict upon their own people. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. -
Dr Lucinda Newns
Lecturer in English Lucinda Newns is a Lecturer in English specialising in postcolonial and environmental literature. She joined BGU in 2023 after previous positions at King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London and the University of Manchester. She has also held a research fellowship at the Education University of Hong Kong (2020-2021). She was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship to complete her PhD at London Metropolitan University and holds an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) and a BA from New York University. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. -
Dr Ian Pownall
Dr Ian Pownall is an experienced academic researcher having started his career as a political and policy researcher in the 1990s, he then progressed through various posts including Head of Department and Director of Teaching, Learning at Hull University and more recently, associate professor at Lincoln Business School and currently has a new role of LINK tutor for the BA programmes with ICON college. Ian has eclectic teaching and research interests that include; the public sector in general, policy making, strategy, pedagogy, international business, research methods and decision making. -
Dr Emily McLemore
Dr. Emily McLemore is a Lecturer with the Foundation Year Programme. She earned her Ph.D. in English with a dissertation titled ‘Desiring Women: Pleasure and Power in Late Medieval English Literature’ from the University of Notre Dame. She also holds a Master of Arts in English from Oregon State University and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Secondary Education from Western Colorado University. Her areas of specialisation include Old and Middle English language and literature, gender and sexuality studies, and inclusive pedagogy in higher education. Emily is an experienced and passionate teacher. She was formally trained as both a university lecturer and a secondary educator, and has previously taught English literature, writing and rhetoric, and gender studies courses at the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame London, and Oregon State University. As a licensed secondary educator, she also has experience teaching English language arts and creative writing for students aged 11 to 18. Emily’s research focuses on representations of women and the intersections of gender, sex, and violence in medieval texts. Her book project, based on her doctoral dissertation, examines representations of women’s desire and explores how eroticism works for and through female characters in Robert Henryson’s Testament of Cresseid, The Book of Margery Kempe, Geoffrey’s Chaucer’s Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Although her research interests typically tend toward texts from the later medieval period, she maintains a profound love for Old English poetry, most especially Beowulf.
