Dr Amanda Arbouin
Dr Amanda Arbouin joined Bishop Grosseteste University as an Honorary Senior Fellow in Education Studies in August 2021. She has expertise in the Sociology of Education, with a particular focus on the effects of race, class and gender in education and employment. -
Philip Yeung
Philip has worked at Bishop Grosseteste University since 2018, first as a Visiting Tutor before taking on various roles such as Programme Leader, Deputy Head of Programmes and Associate Dean. He has taught on several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Foundation Year, PGCE, iPGCE and MA Education. Philip currently works as Head of Online Learning at the University. Philip studied his undergraduate degree in music at the University of East Anglia. Once graduated, he undertook his PGCE with the Open University and became a fully qualified teacher in the secondary sector. Philip spent 10 years working in secondary schools and FE colleges, mostly as a Music Teacher and Curriculum Leader of Music and Performing Arts. After completing his MA in International Educational Management at the University of Leeds, Philip taught on various Education-related MA programmes at both the University of Leeds and the University of Bath, specialising in educational leadership and management. Professor Chris Atkin
Programme Leader MA in EducationProfessor Chris Atkin’s education qualifications include Certificate in Education (Further Education), Bachelor of Education (Hons.), Master of Arts in Learning and Teaching, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Chris’ main research expertise lies in the policy and practice of post-school education and training; with a particular focus on rural communities. He has completed a range of research projects funded by the UK funding councils (ESRC, EPSRC, NERC), the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the British Academy, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the National Research and Development Centre for adult literacy and numeracy (NRDC), Local Authorities and the Learning and Skills Council. His research has included both national and international comparative studies including ‘practitioner based’ enquiry with a range of educational stakeholders. He currently teaches on master's and doctoral programmes. Chris has held academic posts at De Montfort University (1994-99), the University of Nottingham (1999-2010) and Liverpool Hope University (2010-12). Chris joined Bishop Grosseteste University in September 2012. -
Lucy Hughes
Lucy is a Senior Lecturer on the MA in Education and iPGCE programmes at Bishop Grosseteste University. With over a decade of experience in education, she brings a wealth of practical knowledge and academic expertise to her role. Background and Experience Lucy's career in education began in the secondary school setting, where she spent 9 years as a dedicated MFL teacher and Head of Department. She progressed quickly to leadership roles in curriculum, whole school improvement and teacher development. This hands-on experience has provided her with invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing educators in today's diverse classrooms. Transition to Higher Education Later in her career, she transitioned to Initial Teacher Education (ITE), where she continued to develop her passion for preparing the next generation of educators. This move allowed her to combine her practical experience with cutting-edge educational research, enriching both her teaching and research interests. -
Dr. Jessica Vernon
Dr. Jessica Vernon is programme leader of MA Education and iPGCE. Prior to joining BGU Jessica earned her undergraduate degree in TESOL and Linguistics from Manchester Metropolitan University. Alongside her studies she completed her CELTA qualification and gained experience teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and English for Academic Purposes. She has experience teaching English to adults and young learners. In 2018 Jessica joined BGU as a student to complete her MA in Education with TESOL. Following this she returned to BGU as a lecturer in TESOL and Linguistics. Teaching on BA English Language and Teaching, and MA Education with TESOL. Her teaching focused on Language and Communication, Historical Linguistics, TESOL in Practice, Testing and Assessment in Language teaching, and Global English. In addition to this, she held the role of course director for the Trinity CertTESOL award where would guide level 5 students to gain an internationally recognised teaching qualification. Whilst working at BGU Jessica has completed her PhD part time, which was awarded by the University of Leicester in 2024. Thesis entitled, Motivational frameworks in a classroom context: exploring their utility in measuring LOTE learners' motivation. Her academic interests include: Modern foreign language motivation in anglophone countries, the impact of the learning environment and emotions on language learning, and supporting EAL learners. -
Dr Caroline Meredith
As Head of Academic Partnerships, Caroline oversees BGU’s collaborative partnerships with a range of local Further Education colleges and other education and training providers across the UK. This involves working collaboratively with internal and external colleagues on portfolio development, academic standards, academic quality, and student experience. Additionally, as Senior Lecturer in Education, Caroline contributes to teaching, learning and assessment on a range of postgraduate education programmes. Caroline’s research interests have included transitions in childhood and young adulthood, digital technologies in pre-schools, and the professional development and career journeys of teaching assistants. She is a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Chartered Member of the Chartered Management Institute. -
Dr Sheine Peart
Dr Sheine Peart joined Bishop Grosseteste University in April 2019 from Nottingham Trent University. She is an Associate Professor in Access, Equality and Inclusion and is based within the Research Team at BGU. She is Programme Leader for Education based PhDs and the Education Doctorate as well as contributing to other education courses. She has had a diverse career in education working as a secondary school teacher, youth worker and education adviser before moving into higher education (HE) in 2006. Immediately before teaching in HE she worked in the further education (FE) sector for 15 years teaching numeracy to learners on a wide variety of vocational programmes and managing teacher education programmes. She has wide knowledge of practical classroom issues, extensive experience of working with learners who present challenging behaviour and an outstanding track record in supporting students, helping them to identify and achieve their goals. Her outstanding doctoral research on the experience of Black male learners in the post-compulsory sector which privileged the voices of marginalized, silenced learners won the national BERA/SAGE award for research. Sheine’s education qualifications include a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE Secondary Education), Bachelor of Science (Hons.), Master of Arts in Education and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Sean Ingoldsby
Sean Ingoldsby has extensive experience of teaching in early years and primary school settings, and in tertiary education both in the UK and overseas. Over the course of his career, he has taken on a wide range of coordination and leadership roles including early years coordinator and primary SENCO positions and more recently, on a variety of undergraduate teacher training programmes specialising in, Early Childhood Education, Educational Technology and TESOL, each of which is leveraged in his teaching on the BA Education Studies programme. Sean currently leads modules on inclusion and diversity, the impact of context in the learning process, and of diverse perspectives on education on both national and global policy and practice, and educational research. His research interests include the impact of context on learning, embodied cognition and educational technology.
