From Wednesday 21st to Friday 23rd May, the MA Education teaching team attended the Teacher Education Policy in Europe (TEPE) International Conference in Zwolle, Netherlands.

The conference is purposed to gather educators, researchers, and policymakers together, who are committed to strengthening the connective role of teachers in society.

Hosted by the Viaa University of Applied Sciences, the event saw a combination of panel discussions, interactive sessions and insightful contributions from leading academics such as Professor Kathleen Lynch and Professor Marc Vermeulen.

Philip Yeung, Head of Online Learning at BGU, co-hosted one of the sessions on the topic of how meaningful professional development can enhance teacher retention. With colleague and leadership expert, Dr André Koffeman, the discussion evolved into exploring practical strategies, such as how to design professional development that empowers teachers.

The conference had a central theme of Teacher and Teacher Educators as Bridges in Society, which provided a timely backdrop for discussions on addressing polarisation and fostering inclusivity through teacher education.

Philip also joined a panel discussion alongside academics from both the Netherlands and Ireland, to exchange insights on effective leadership and sustainable teacher support.

Philip said: “Participation in TEPE 2025 reflects our institution’s commitment to advancing educational practice and policy.

“Such engagement not only strengthens international networks, but it also brings fresh ideas back to our community, ensuring that our courses, such as our iPGCE and MA International Education, are informed by the latest research.”
