We are proud to be one of a select number of universities throughout the UK which offers student teachers this opportunity, to develop their ability in teaching primary science.
Now for the third consecutive year in a row, the Primary Science Teaching Trust continue to offer the PSEA scheme.
The scheme is particularly relevant for students in their third and final year of study who engage in reflective practice and development in primary science, beyond the statutory content of their initial teacher education phase.
By completing the award, student teachers can hope to start their careers with increased competence and confidence when teaching science and are equipped to take up future school leadership positions in science.
In August this year, BGU students Ella Pymm, Jenna Cocking, Lauren Gray and Ruby Cox received the Primary Science Enhancement Award (PSEA) for Initial Teacher Education (ITE).
With the guidance of Senior Lecturers Alison Bunting and Jamila Hussein, the student teachers gained new strengths – ranging from making cross-curricular links between science and additional subjects to developing scientific enquiry skills in pupils during the PSEA scheme.
Jamila Hussein, Senior Lecturer in Primary and Early Years ITE Primary at BGU, says: “I am thrilled to share that in the last academic year, we had another cohort of students complete the PSEA scheme.
“The award can not only help to build confidence in teaching science but also enable student teachers to develop an existing interest and passion.
“I would like to take this chance to highlight BGU’s offering of the PSEA scheme as an opportunity for prospective ITE students!”
The scheme draws on rationale, processes and resources developed by the Primary Science Teaching Trust, the Primary Science Quality Mark, and by Stranmillis University College in Belfast.
The award, developed by the Primary Science Teaching Trust, is supported by the Association for Science Education, the Primary Science Quality Mark and The Ogden Trust.
