Health & Social Care graduate nominated for award
Bishop Grosseteste University graduate Kayleigh Denman has recently been nominated for the Daisy Award by a patient she looked after in the course of being a student nurse. She is the first ever student at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust to receive this nomination! The Daisy Award is an internationally recognised award which identifies nurses and midwives who give extraordinary compassionate care. "I graduated from BGU in 2023 with a degree in BSc (Hons) Health & Social Care. I personally feel the course at BGU played a massive part in me being able to understand the meaning of evidence-based, compassionate care and how to professionally practice this. The course is particularly beneficial if you were like me and uncertain as to where in the health and social care sector you would like to go into, due to the broad spectrum of opportunities and choices. This course enabled me to learn multiple skills that cover all aspects of health and social care, preparing me for any challenges, achievements and decisions that will benefit me in the future. The skills and knowledge I learnt throughout the 3 years undergraduate degree helped me become a student nurse, allowing me to work to the best of my abilities, along with my understanding of how to communicate in a professional and friendly manner to all patients and staff members, as reflected by the nomination for the Daisy Award. The Health & Social Care lecturers were amazing in terms of knowledge within the field and they always went above and beyond to support and care for their students, to which I personally am grateful for. I am awaiting to start the MA Health & Social Care Leadership course at BGU, encouraged by the support and confidence given to me throughout the BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care. Achieving a Master’s degree in this subject will enable me to consider different career paths that are available and allow me to proceed in a future career in an important role within this sector. I have already gained key skills and experiences during my undergraduate degree, giving me a solid foundation for my studies and the motivation to succeed and further boost my skills and abilities." Paul Staples
Paul has a wide range of experience across the education and youth work sectors. His most recent position was as a curriculum lead for Higher Education courses in an FE college. Paul has worked for several third sector and education organisations, including the Prince’s Trust and Lincolnshire County Council. Paul has experience of managing education settings including alternative education and supporting NEET young people in deprived areas of the county. Academically Paul undertook the Applied Studies in Children and Youth Work BA (Hons) at Bishop Grosseteste and gained a 1st class honours degree with JNC, and then went on to complete a Masters in Education at BGU. -
Dr Alison Riley
Alison Riley coordinates and teaches on our successful BA Early Childhood Studies programme. She joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2007 as a lecturer on the work-based learning courses for classroom assistants and other educational support workers. Prior to this Alison worked in a variety of school based roles including senior leadership. Alison is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Teaching Alison teaches on the undergraduate Early Childhood Studies programme. Her teaching interests include the influence of policy, provision and legislation in educational settings and leadership and management in Early Years settings. Alison’’s interests focus predominantly on the role of the early years practitioner, enabling her to utilise her former role in education to support students seeking a route into teaching or other roles within early years settings. Building on her Master's research, Alison also has a particular interest in the development of study skills in higher education. -
Dr Nyree-Anne Nicholson
Programme Leader - Professional Studies Nyree Nicholson is the Programme Leader for the Professional Studies team, and teaches across the three pathways on the Professional Studies Foundation, Honours and Master’s Degrees. She joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2015. Prior to this Nyree worked as a Programme Leader within another Higher Education intuition. Nyree worked with the Early Years Sector for eleven years also working as a foster carer for twenty years. Teaching Nyree teaches on the Foundation, Honours and Master’s Degrees across the Professional Studies pathways. Her teaching interests include all aspects of early childhood development. Nyree has a particular interest in Early Years research, collaborative practice, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and the Early Years Practitioner’s role planning and assessment within the Early Years Foundation Stage. Nyree is also interested in how the practitioner develops their own professional identity through experience and education. -
Tara May
Tara teaches on the FdA and BA (Hons) (top up) Applied Studies across all pathways (Learning Support, Early Childhood and Children and Youth). She joined Bishop Grosseteste in 2012 as a Visiting Tutor working on the FdA and BA (top up) Applied Studies, undergraduate Early Childhood Studies, Education Studies and SENI programmes before taking up a full time position in 2015. Prior to this Tara worked as the Assessment Manager for an Early Years Professional Status provider and a Programme Leader of a FdEd and BA (Hons) (top up) Early Childhood Studies within another Higher Education institution. Teaching Tara teaches on the Foundation and Honours degrees in Applied Studies across all of three pathways. Her teaching interests include the individual in society, inclusion and professional practice in early years. Tara also has a particular interest in the role of early years professionals and the implementation and development of the Early Years Teacher Status. -

Martin Smith
Martin Smith joined BGU in 2016 and is the technician for Psychology. His main role is supporting staff and students with using the variety of Psychology equipment we have available in the department, such as the virtual reality headset and BIOPAC devices. Martin delivers a number of practical sessions across the degree to help support student understanding of psychological concepts. Martin also co-ordinates the SONA system, which is used to help advertise staff and student research projects. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Lincoln and completed a Research Master's looking at using Virtual Reality as a means of investigating how we use language for objects that are in motion. Martin is part of the Psychology, Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange unit, where he offers additional technical support for other members of the unit. -
