Students from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) to cycle length of Ukraine in fundraiser
A group of students and some staff members are attempting to cycle 364.4 miles (north to south of Ukraine) in 12 hours to raise money for the Ukraine Appeal run by Save the Children. The students from the three-year Primary Education course wanted to do something to support the Ukrainian children that are at risk as the conflict continues. The ‘BGU Cycle for Ukraine’ challenge will begin at 9am just inside Hardy Building on two static bikes, with students needing to cover 30 miles every hour to reach their target of 364.4 miles by 9pm. Around 15 third year students and five members of staff have agreed to take part throughout the day, and the progress will be shared on BGUs Instagram account. The bikes have been loaned from the BGU sports centre and the catering team will be providing refreshments for the 15 third year students and five members of staff that have signed up to take part throughout the day. Save the Children’s Ukrainian crisis response aims to reach 3.5m vulnerable children and their families through distributing supplies, providing assistance for basic needs such as food, rent and medicine and offering vital mental health and psychosocial support. Dave Wallace, Senior Lecturer in Primary Education, said: “Like many people we’ve been watching the conflict in Ukraine unfold, and we all wanted to do something to help. Dr Sunny Dhillon
Prior to joining the Education Studies team in November 2021, Sunny spent five years as a learning developer at the University of Leeds, as well as at BGU, where he also worked as a Visiting Tutor in the Theology, Ethics and Society department. Sunny conducted his doctoral research through the Philosophy department at Cardiff University, focussing on the concept of utopia through the works of Friedrich W. Nietzsche, Ernst Bloch and Theodor W. Adorno. Sunny’s research interests include Critical Theory (The Frankfurt School), Nietzsche, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Utopia and Philosophy of Education. His current research projects critically explore education as ontotheological principle, and student engagement from the perspective of academics in the social sciences who often experience a ‘disclosure dilemma’ when deciding what perspectives to share with students across levels of HE. Sean Ingoldsby
Sean Ingoldsby has extensive experience of teaching in early years and primary school settings, and in tertiary education both in the UK and overseas. Over the course of his career, he has taken on a wide range of coordination and leadership roles including early years coordinator and primary SENCO positions and more recently, on a variety of undergraduate teacher training programmes specialising in, Early Childhood Education, Educational Technology and TESOL, each of which is leveraged in his teaching on the BA Education Studies programme. Sean currently leads modules on inclusion and diversity, the impact of context in the learning process, and of diverse perspectives on education on both national and global policy and practice, and educational research. His research interests include the impact of context on learning, embodied cognition and educational technology. -
Collaborative Educational Partnerships (UK)
Collaborative Educational Partnerships are established with institutions who deliver BGU approved degree programmes locally and more widely across England. These partnerships enable BGU and its UK partner institutions to enrich the local HE provision, extend the geographical reach of the university, and enable a diverse range of students to achieve a BGU-validated qualification. Depending on their course and location, many students at BGU's UK partner institutions later progress onto higher-level programmes, which might be delivered either at BGU, or within their own institutions -
