Dr Derwin Gregory
Associate Professor of Conflict ArchaeologyProgramme Leader, Archaeology, Military History, and Heritage derwin.gregory@bishopg.ac.uk Dr Derwin Gregory specialises in post-medieval landscapes and modern conflict archaeology. He has undertaken research projects on the archaeology of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the United States Army Air Force (USAAF). Following excavations at a Second World War airfield, during which he uncovered evidence of personal acts of memorialisation, he has become particularly interested in the link between material culture and wellbeing within the armed forces. Louise Connolly
Louise has established a career in education over the last 24 years. Having previously worked with the University as a Visiting Tutor for three years before joining the team permanently, Louise joined Bishop Grosseteste University in September 2020 in a permanent role as a Senior Lecturer in Initial Primary Teacher Education where she now works on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Louise leads academic writing, research modules and also supervises masters students through their dissertations. Prior to joining the university academic team, Louise was a teacher in primary schools for nearly 20 years. Throughout her time in school, she carried out a number of roles such as Foundation and Key Stage One Leader, English Lead, History Lead and was also a Special Educational Needs Coordinator for 15 years. She later became a Head Teacher of a large primary school in a deprived area in Nottinghamshire and was also the Safeguarding Lead and Special Educational Needs Coordinator for a Multi-Academy Trust.Louise completed a Masters in Education in 2019 and predominantly focused on areas of Special Educational Needs and Emotional Health. Louise achieved Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy in 2021 and is in the final stages of her PhD where her topic of interest is around worry and wellbeing in undergraduate student teachers. She is a review editor for an educational journal and also an external examiner for Initial Teacher Education at another university. Louise also enjoys a role as a Primary School Governor in a local school. Louise has previously written articles on educational areas of interest in the TES and other educational magazines. She had her first book published by Sage in 2022 in their Super Quick Skills series about proofreading essays and also recently had an article approved for publication by The Teacher Education Advancement Network (TEAN). -
Katie Furnival
Katie joined BGU in September 2020. During her teaching career, Katie taught in a range of schools in different parts of the UK, teaching every year group across the primary range. She has been responsible for many curriculum areas, including English, SEN, ITT and Art and also has been a member of SLT as a KS2 leader. In addition, Katie has been a Director of Learning for a large academy trust in the North of England. She provided modelled teaching, pedagogical leadership and professional development to colleagues in order to develop teaching and learning. She has also researched and developed a new approach to Feedforward marking; a method embraced by 32 schools. Katie has SLE (Specialist Leader of Education) status for ITE, support for the most able and English and is a trained KS2 writing moderator for Doncaster Council. She has previously been a guest lecturer at another HEI and enjoyed delivering a workshop at the Festival of Education in Sheffield. -
Edward Collyer
Edward Collyer is an Honorary Research Fellow. He has previously worked in the School of Teacher Development across PGCE and PGDE programmes. He is a member of the Telling it Like it Is Group and the LiLi Research Knowledge Exchange Unit. Edward is also studying towards his PhD part-time where he is exploring how the professional identity of trainee English teachers changes throughout the initial training year in relation to the core aspects of the secondary English curriculum. -
Samantha Hoyes
Samantha has been teaching at Bishop Grosseteste University since 2012, initially as a visiting tutor and as a full-time member of staff from 2020. Prior to joining BGU full time, she has worked in a variety of early years settings, as well as managing and co-owning two early years settings in Lincolnshire. Samantha also has experience inspecting early years provision. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is currently undertaking her PhD. Her PhD research focuses on the experiences of working mothers and how they position their identity. Samantha has a keen interest in the power dynamics involved in research, exploring a range of methods and approaches, including photo elicitation, online interviewing and quilting as ways and means to share power and present research findings. Samantha teaches on the undergraduate Early Childhood Studies programme and teaching interests include policy, provision and practice, outdoor play, children’s rights, and risky play, as well as an array of contemporary issues which impact the sector. Building on research from her Master's, Samantha has a strong interest in early years professionalism and the continued development of the early years sector and is Co-Chair for the Professionalism and Workforce Strategy group (PAWS) as part of the Early Childhood Studies Degree Network (ECSDN). -
Sophie Longney
Sophie Longney joined Bishop Grosseteste University in February 2021 as a Senior Lecturer in Initial Primary Education. She had previously visited the university as a guest lecturer for many years, where she contributed to the Education Studies undergraduate programme. Prior to joining the university academic team, Sophie was the Vice Principal of a large primary school located in a deprived area of Nottinghamshire. As part of this role, she was Head of Teaching and Learning, English and Key Stage Two Lead while continuing to teach daily English lessons in Year 6. She was also the English and Year 6 Lead for a multi-academy trust. Sophie completed her Master's in Education in 2019 and focussed on improving the teaching of reading within Key Stage Two. The findings from this research had a very positive impact and significantly improved end of KS2 reading outcomes. Sophie has also been awarded Chartered Teacher Status (CTeach) and is a trained KS2 writing moderator for Nottinghamshire County Council. -
Dr Ursula McKenna
Dr Ursula McKenna is Senior Research Fellow in Implicit Religion at BGU where she is located within the Department of Theology and the World Religions and Education Research Unit. Upon completion of her BA (QTS) she was awarded an Economic and Social Research Council MA studentship and obtained an MA (with distinction) for her work on religious education for children with special educational needs in the primary school. While combining a part-time research post with a job-share class teaching position she then completed her doctorate. Her research was an evaluation of the Building E- Bridges programme, a project which advocated the use of email in primary schools to promote interfaith dialogue amongst pupils across the UK. For fourteen years Ursula taught across the primary age range and as research fellow at the University of Warwick (1999-2021) she contributed to the PGCE Primary and Early Years Religious Education module and the MA in Religious Education by distance learning course. She has undertaken supervision of dissertation students on BA and MA Education Studies degrees and has co-supervised research students. For twelve years she was editorial assistant for the British Journal of Religious Education, co-ordinating the refereeing process for all submissions and special issues. -

Dr Hannah Grenham
Hannah has been a member of staff at Bishop Grosseteste University since 2017, when she joined the Centre for Enhancement in Learning and Teaching (CELT) as a Learning Development Tutor. Since 2021, she has worked as a Senior Lecturer on the Foundation Year programme and also contributes to teaching in the History department. Prior to coming to BGU, Hannah earned an undergraduate MA in English and Modern History and a postgraduate MLitt in Modern History, both from the University of St Andrews. She was awarded her PhD from the University of St Andrews in 2017 for a thesis titled ‘Power to the People: Changing Attitudes to Computer Technology in the United States, 1951-1982’. Hannah is also a Certified Practitioner of Learning Development through ALDinHE and an Associate Fellow of the HEA. Hannah’s research interests are in late modern US history, particularly in the connections between society, culture, and technology. She is also interested in researching the professionalisation of Learning Development and pedagogical practices within Higher Education. Aggi Doughty
Aggi Doughty is a Senior Lecturer on the Careers Development Professional Apprenticeship within the Business Team, and a Careers Adviser at The Hub. Aggi gained an undergraduate degree in Drama from the University of Leeds in 2001 and ran her own business working as an actor, director and dramaturg for five years, before moving into careers and completing her Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Guidance (DipCG) and Level 6 in Careers Development simultaneously in 2014. She has continued to study and practice within the careers space ever since, gaining a Masters in Career Development from Nottingham Trent University in 2021. She is committed to lifelong learning, gaining her Level 6 Professional Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing in 2014. She has most recently gained a Level 2 in Youth Work Principles, and has been a Fellow of the HEA since 2020. Her research interests are around the intersection of coaching and careers, narrative in career journeys, and sociological theories of employment, specifically in relation to gender and leadership. Prior to joining BGU, Aggi held a portfolio of careers consultancy and teaching roles alongside leadership positions in Further and Higher education. Her experience is local and national in a wide variety of educational settings from alternative provision, to Independent secondary schools, to Higher Education Institutions. She has been a Careers Leader in a number of secondary schools and has gained the National Quality in Careers Standard via the Career Mark pathway from scratch for four separate institutions (and counting!). She continues to work in practice as a Career Development Professional alongside lecturing.
