Dr Sunny Dhillon
Prior to joining the Education Studies team in November 2021, Sunny spent five years as a learning developer at the University of Leeds, as well as at BGU, where he also worked as a Visiting Tutor in the Theology, Ethics and Society department. Sunny conducted his doctoral research through the Philosophy department at Cardiff University, focussing on the concept of utopia through the works of Friedrich W. Nietzsche, Ernst Bloch and Theodor W. Adorno. Sunny’s research interests include Critical Theory (The Frankfurt School), Nietzsche, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Utopia and Philosophy of Education. His current research projects critically explore education as ontotheological principle, and student engagement from the perspective of academics in the social sciences who often experience a ‘disclosure dilemma’ when deciding what perspectives to share with students across levels of HE. Eleanor Tierney
Eleanor joined BGU as a Visiting Tutor in 2019 after many years of Secondary Computing classroom teaching and supporting trainee teachers. She has been Head of Department and ICT Across the Curriculum Lead, auditing, planning and delivering staff training as well as providing additional support for Gifted, Talented and More Able students. Eleanor has taught qualified teachers Internationally with particular emphasis on Assessment for Learning and Gifted, Talented and more Able students in Computing. Eleanor is Computing Lead for PGCE Secondary Initial Teacher Education and also supports the Science department. She is also a member of the Social Justice Research and Knowledge Exchange Unit. Eleanor’s Doctoral research focuses on exploring school based mentors’ training needs in general terms, and more specifically Computing mentors, and how this translates to supporting trainee Computing teachers strengthen the interplay between theory and practice. -
Tom Dannatt
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Operations) Tom Dannatt has overall responsibility for the majority of all non-academic operations, including Finance, Human Resources, Estates and Marketing. Tom has extensive experience of financial and resources leadership within the education sector, including strategic financial and resources planning, international partnerships, infrastructure and capital projects, risk management and business development across operations in the UK, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and China. Prior to joining BGU, Tom held senior roles within, amongst others, The Lincoln College Group, Lincolnshire NHS Trust (Chair of the Audit Committee), Franklin College in Grimsby, Grimsby Institute of FE&HE. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management, and a Member of the Institute of Directors. -
Dr Darren Poole
Dr Darren Poole is a lecturer in Military History at Bishop Grosseteste University. He holds a Ph.D. in Military History from the University of Chester. In addition to his History qualifications, he also has degrees in Geography, Education and Management. Before joining BGU, Darren taught History at both the University of Chester and University Centre, Shrewsbury. At Chester and Shrewsbury, he taught all aspects of Military History and also supported learners who were new to Higher Education, including international students joining English universities for the first time. Prior to becoming a lecturer, Darren was a Head of History and Geography in secondary schools across England. He still retains links to schools and education. His research interests include aerial warfare, counterinsurgency and the voices of the oppressed and ignored in conflict. He is particularly committed to promoting the ‘unheard’ voices of war i.e. those civilians neglected by conventional military accounts of combat. Darren is a published author and is currently working on a book examining the underreported violence that terrorists often inflict upon their own people. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. -
Dr Lucinda Newns
Lecturer in English Lucinda Newns is a Lecturer in English specialising in postcolonial and environmental literature. She joined BGU in 2023 after previous positions at King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London and the University of Manchester. She has also held a research fellowship at the Education University of Hong Kong (2020-2021). She was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship to complete her PhD at London Metropolitan University and holds an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) and a BA from New York University. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. -
Dr Ian Pownall
Dr Ian Pownall is an experienced academic researcher having started his career as a political and policy researcher in the 1990s, he then progressed through various posts including Head of Department and Director of Teaching, Learning at Hull University and more recently, associate professor at Lincoln Business School and currently has a new role of LINK tutor for the BA programmes with ICON college. Ian has eclectic teaching and research interests that include; the public sector in general, policy making, strategy, pedagogy, international business, research methods and decision making. -
Dr Duncan Mercieca
Dr Duncan Mercieca lectures in Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion at BGU. His research draws upon post-structural philosophers to think through educational issues, in particular, those related to diversity and otherness; inclusion and disability; and critiquing education research and its methods. Duncan also works in a special school in Scotland. -
Claudia McKibbin
Claudia McKibbin is a Business Lecturer. She holds an LLB in Law and a Master of Arts in Middle East Policy Studies from the University of Exeter. She also holds a Master of Arts in International Relations recognised by the Universidade de Brasília. Her experience includes teaching in both Portuguese and English, developing professionals, content creation, coaching and mentoring, and learner capability analysis. Claudia’s areas of interest and expertise include EDI, Strategy and Risk Management, International Business, Continuous Improvement in Industry, Project Management, Law and Policy Compliance, Leadership and Management, Human Resources Management, Organisational Development, L&D, Conflict Resolution, and Cultural Intelligence. Claudia is a member of the Chartered Management Institute, works as a freelance consultant and has experience working within both public and private sector companies. Notably, Claudia worked as a Contracts Manager at an engineering firm in the USA, as an Executive Officer and Continuous Improvement Specialist within the steel industry in Brazil, and most recently as a Strategic Business Partner at a Lincolnshire NHS Trust. Alongside her role as lecturer, Claudia supports the Lincolnshire Open Research & Innovation Centre (LORIC) as a Business Research Associate with projects funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Outside of academia, Claudia teaches Latin and Ballroom dancing, and enjoys spending time with her family. -
Dawood Khan
Dawood Khan is a Lecturer in Marketing and Branding at Bishop Grosseteste University. He teaches undergraduate, postgraduate, and apprenticeship modules, and is actively involved in curriculum development for advanced-level courses. Prior to this, Dawood served as an Associate Lecturer at Nottingham University Business School (at the University of Nottingham), supervising MSc Marketing and Branding dissertations and mentoring students through complex research processes. Dawood has held various teaching positions at Nottingham Business School and Nottingham School of Art and Design (at Nottingham Trent University), where he delivered modules ranging from Strategic Marketing and Brand Management to Advanced Research Methods. He has also supervised dissertations for postgraduate students in fashion marketing and branding, fostering their academic and professional growth. Additionally, at Oxford Business College, he taught a broad range of courses, including Principles of Marketing and Researching Business Data taught via the University of West London curriculum. Dr Ian Hardwick
Dr Ian Hardwick specialises in the archaeology of later prehistory and the Roman period in Britain, together with the study of past landscapes (of all periods). He has undertaken several research projects looking at interactions between the Roman Empire and the local people(s) of central and northern Britain, together with the impacts these relations had upon surrounding frontier landscapes. Having worked for English Heritage / Historic England and in commercial archaeology on a wide range of archaeological survey projects (particularly in aerial survey), he gained his PhD at the University of York researching the region-wide impacts of the northern frontier of Roman Britannia (from Yorkshire to southern Scotland). This was followed by work as a post-doctoral research assistant on the Leverhulme Trust-funded ‘Beyond Walls: Reassessing Iron Age and Roman Encounters in Northern Britain’ project at the University of Edinburgh, and his current role as lecturer in archaeology at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln. His research interests include broader concepts of landscape, identity and frontier, together with how these themes interact (for Roman Britain and other empires of the ancient and more recent past).
