  1. Dr Mary-Louise Maynes
    Louise has been teaching at Bishop Grosseteste University since 2008, initially as a visiting tutor and as a full-time member of staff from 2012. Prior to working at BGU Louise worked as a primary teacher in Kent and Lincolnshire and for a Schools Library Service, where she advised teachers on how to set up and manage school libraries. She has also had a career as a museum educator, working with children and young people in a variety of museums including the Apprentice House at Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire and the Natural History Museum in London where she managed their hands-on ‘discovery centre’. Teaching Louise teaches on the undergraduate Early Childhood Studies programme. Her teaching interests include the history of childhood, early literacy and working with babies and children under three. She has a particular interest in Children’s Literature and in developing ways to encourage students and practitioners to extend their knowledge and use of books with babies and young children. She has also contributed sessions on informal learning for the Education Studies programme.
  2. Dr Matthew Dunn
    Matt is Head of Initial Teacher Education Programmes, with a portfolio encompassing primary, secondary and further education age phases. His portfolio also covers postgraduate taught programmes for teachers such as the MA Education and international distance learning programmes, including the iPGCE and MA International Education. Matt is also Associate Dean (Admissions) with a cross-Faculty remit for liaison between the Faculty Executive Group and the university’s Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions teams.
  3. Dr Nicki Walsh
    With over 17 years’ experience of teaching and learning within Higher Education (at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Institute, Nicki is currently the Programme Lead for Health and Social Care programmes at BGU, the undergraduate BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care and MA in Health and Social Care Leadership. Nicki’s clinical career as a Registered Nurse (Adult) saw her specialise in orthopaedics and trauma followed by District Nursing (with Specialist Practitioner Qualification) and then as Diabetes Specialist Nurse and remains a Registered Nurse. Her areas of teaching and learning reflect both her clinical and research experience. Her PhD focused on the Continuous Professional Development to Support People with Diabetes by considering the perspectives of Nurses working in UK General Practice. Other areas of research include public health (Nicki is a Member of the Institute for Health Promotion and Education), evidence-based practice utilisation, practitioner research and education as well as health and social care leadership. Nicki has published in national and international journals as well as having presented at a variety of national and international conferences across a range of subject areas.
  4. Professor Chris Atkin
    Programme Leader MA in EducationProfessor Chris Atkin’s education qualifications include Certificate in Education (Further Education), Bachelor of Education (Hons.), Master of Arts in Learning and Teaching, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Chris’ main research expertise lies in the policy and practice of post-school education and training; with a particular focus on rural communities. He has completed a range of research projects funded by the UK funding councils (ESRC, EPSRC, NERC), the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the British Academy, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the National Research and Development Centre for adult literacy and numeracy (NRDC), Local Authorities and the Learning and Skills Council. His research has included both national and international comparative studies including ‘practitioner based’ enquiry with a range of educational stakeholders. He currently teaches on master's and doctoral programmes. Chris has held academic posts at De Montfort University (1994-99), the University of Nottingham (1999-2010) and Liverpool Hope University (2010-12). Chris joined Bishop Grosseteste University in September 2012.
  5. Emeritus Professor Mike Cole
    Dr Mike Cole is Emeritus Professor in Education and Equality at Bishop Grosseteste University. His research has focused primarily on racism and on Marxist theory, as well as Marxist critiques of Critical Race Theory in Education. More recently, he has worked on public pedagogy. His latest books on public pedagogy are Trump, The Alt-Right and Public Pedagogies of Hate and for Fascism: What is to be Done? (2019), Theresa May, the Hostile Environment and Public Pedagogies of Hate and Threat: The Case for a Future Without Borders (2020), and Climate Change, the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Public Pedagogies: The Case for Ecosocialism, all published by Routledge. He has also been working on an extended monograph, entitled, Racism and the Tory Party: from Disraeli to Johnson, as well as two edited collections, Education, Equality and Human Rights: Issues of Gender, Racism, Sexuality, Disability and Social Class 5th Edition and Equality, Education and Human Rights in America: Issues of Gender, ‘Race’, Sexuality, Disability and Social Class, all to be published by Routledge in 2022.
  6. Sarah Howe
    Sarah joined BGU in September 2015. Her experience is primarily working with children aged between birth and seven years. This experience incorporates working in Lincolnshire and British International Schools for eighteen years and seven years as an Early Years Consultant. Sarah has a range of leadership experience both in the UK and beyond. This includes positions as Head of Infant School in both Dubai and Brussels, and Head of an Infant and Nursery School in Lincoln. For the past eight years, Sarah has also been an active governor in a large primary school. In these various roles, Sarah has worked closely with staff, governors, students, newly qualified teachers and other agencies in both schools and settings, including Children’s Centres, to provide high quality learning and teaching outcomes. Her work has included leading and supporting a range of training and professional development, which has also been enhanced through close partnership working with other schools, settings, agencies and training providers. Teaching As a Senior Lecturer, Sarah primarily teaches and contributes to the PGCE- Early Years and PGCE- 3 to 7 years programmes. Her particular areas of specialism are Early Years, supporting EAL learners, promoting a creative curriculum and Art.
  7. Dr Sheine Peart
    Dr Sheine Peart joined Bishop Grosseteste University in April 2019 from Nottingham Trent University. She is an Associate Professor in Access, Equality and Inclusion and is based within the Research Team at BGU. She is Programme Leader for Education based PhDs and the Education Doctorate as well as contributing to other education courses. She has had a diverse career in education working as a secondary school teacher, youth worker and education adviser before moving into higher education (HE) in 2006. Immediately before teaching in HE she worked in the further education (FE) sector for 15 years teaching numeracy to learners on a wide variety of vocational programmes and managing teacher education programmes. She has wide knowledge of practical classroom issues, extensive experience of working with learners who present challenging behaviour and an outstanding track record in supporting students, helping them to identify and achieve their goals. Her outstanding doctoral research on the experience of Black male learners in the post-compulsory sector which privileged the voices of marginalized, silenced learners won the national BERA/SAGE award for research. Sheine’s education qualifications include a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE Secondary Education), Bachelor of Science (Hons.), Master of Arts in Education and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).   8. Thomasin Nicholds
    Thomasin is the Head of Programmes; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Associate Dean; International. Having spent a large proportion of her career in the Third Sector, responsible for the strategic development and running of a wide range of services for children, families and communities. These include organisational development programmes for other businesses, community research, Ofsted regulated Further Education, health and wellbeing programmes. In this context she has worked at a national level developing and informing policy, engaging in a wide range of partnerships and leading strategic networks. Thomasin is an experienced Charity Trustee has been on the Boards of organisations of varying sizes and reach. Thomasin has studied Occupational Psychology at postgraduate level and has a particular interest in leadership, inclusivity in the workplace and organisational change. She has worked closely with the University of Lincoln International Business School’s Community Organisations Group for over 15 years in an Associate role. For two years Thomasin was the Principal Investigator for an externally funded, gender and leadership research project, working with colleagues with a background in Social Psychology, Business, Education and Sociology. Thomasin has a background teaching on the Psychology BA (Hons) programme and supervises undergraduate dissertations.
  9. Reverend Dr Tania ap Siôn
    The Revd Dr Tania ap Siôn is Reader of Religions, Humanities and Education, and joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2018. She holds a BA and MA in Theology from Oxford University, an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Wales, Bangor, and a PhD in Education (focusing on theology, psychology and education) from the University of Warwick. Tania’s academic research has a strong relationship with professional practice in church-related, school-related, and community-related contexts. This is underpinned by the professional qualification of PGCE in Religious Studies, ordination as an Anglican priest in the Church in Wales, active membership of national and international organisations concerned with religion in schools, and the position of Executive Director of the St Mary’s Centre (a Christian research institute in Wales). Previously, Tania has held academic posts at Bangor University (1994-2007), Glyndwr University Wrexham (2011-2015), and the University of Warwick (2015-2018). Funded by the Wrexham (Parochial) Educational Foundation in partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University, since October 2020 Tania has been working on the St Giles’ Centre Research, Development and Impact Project in Religious Education, which is an exciting and innovative development taking place in the Wrexham County Borough, North East Wales.
  10. Revd Prof Jeff Astley
    Jeff Astley holds the part-time post of Alister Hardy Professor of Religious and Spiritual Experience. His main research interests are religious and spiritual experiences, Christian formation and ‘ordinary theology’. He is currently working on a research project jointly with the University of Warwick and Boston University, USA. For four years (1977-1981) Jeff was Head of Religious Studies at Bishop Grosseteste College and Associate Tutor at Lincoln Theological College, overseeing a joint degree programme taught at both institutions. From 1981 to 2013, he was the founding Director of the North of England Institute for Christian Education, an independent, ecumenical research and development centre (https://neice.webspace.durham.ac.uk/) with strong links with Durham University where he taught on courses in philosophical theology, science and religion and practical theology, and where he is also an honorary Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion. Jeff studied biological sciences and theology as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, and did postgraduate work in theology at Birmingham University and Durham University (where he received his PhD). He is the author or editor of over 40 books and 150 articles or essays on religious faith, experience and formation; philosophical, systematic, ordinary and practical theology; and various related issues in Christian education and spirituality.
