    BG Futures, Bishop Grosseteste University’s (BGU) Business and Enterprise Centre, recently hosted a networking event enabling organisations in the centre to explore how engaging in effective PR can help them thrive.
  2. BG Futures Inspires New Enterprises in Global Entrepreneurship Week
    BGU Enterprise Club, run by the BG Futures, Careers, Employability and Enterprise team recently ran a series of events as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW); an international initiative which spans 170 countries, and inspires millions to engage in entrepreneurial activity. The week started with the ‘be enterprising boot camp’ where students discovered what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Sessions on how to join The Lincoln Teenage Market, become self-employed, and how to build your professional profile followed along with a talk from Rachel Linstead of Firecracker, a BG Futures based business, who shared her start-up story. On the final day individuals had the opportunity to pitch for free office space to start their own business in BG Futures Business and Enterprise Centre. Becky Goodman, Enterprise Development Manager at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) expressed her hope that the GEW activities would encourage more students to begin their entrepreneurial adventures: “It was great to see learners from a variety of our courses engage with the enterprise offer we are developing here at BGU. “We currently have two Master's Students in residence with us in BG Futures developing their business idea into an effective plan, and we are looking forward to welcoming another undergraduate into our enterprise centre in the New Year who secured a free place with us through the GEW initiative. “I am looking forward to helping more of our students take steps towards self-employment as we continue to develop the enterprise offer at BGU” All BGU students have access to free enterprise and business start guidance, access to free hot desking and a virtual office in BG Futures Business and Enterprise Centre, in addition to networking and volunteering opportunities with a wide variety of local organisations.     Following two years of successfully providing a free platform to creative talents in the city, BG Futures are set to tour the Lincoln Teenage Market, hoping to inspire and support young entrepreneurs from across the wider county.
  5. Students Help National Social Initiative Find New Funding Opportunities
    Students from the Business (Team Entrepreneurship) programme at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) travelled to London last week where they took part in an assessed business challenge project for social enterprise The Ramadan Tent Project (RTP). RTP run the internationally acclaimed 'Open Iftar' event, which this year will be held in major cities around the UK. Iftar is the fast-breaking meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during the month of Ramadan. Open Iftar is an inter/non faith, inter-cultural event which celebrates diversity and welcomes anyone from any background. The first event was held in London in 2013 and since then the initiative has spread to seven cites and four continents, welcoming over 60,000 guests who are invited to join together to share food, to chat, laugh and listen to a variety of speakers on a wide range of subjects. The challenge given to students by RTP was to consider how it could develop sustainable income streams that will allow them to grow the Open Iftar initiative which is free to all who attend. They had 24 hours to research resources, contact potential stakeholders and develop solutions, which were delivered as a professional presentation the following day. Team Coaches Chris Jackson and Peter Tasi from BGU were on hand to monitor the process and progress. Chris was particularly pleased with how the students took to the task: " I have to say that we were pretty impressed with the way our guys tackled a tough task, developing four potential sources of income as well as engaging with people in the local communities by simply going out and talking with them. They also saw a bigger picture and were able to engage wider support nationally, raising over £6,000 in pledges". Peter Tasi added: "This is what can be achieved by active team work. Of course is doesn't just end here as we now have to formally assess the students on their process and how they synthesise their activity to aspects of business theory which are core to their learning". "Following their visible success with the task, they must now formalise and reflect on the process and individually present their learning experience back to us. It's not as straightforward as it seems." On the day, results were presented back to RTP CEO Omar Salha who was visibly impressed: "This is an amazing achievement and we're really grateful to have been able to engage with you in this way. Some of the impromptu visits that you have made in the short time that you were with us show us the size of the task before us." In a short space of time, students found that they were able to engage with corporations such as Disney and Virgin. These are contacts who they will now be working with to explore the full extent of possible support for RTP. Project Leader for the task was BGU student Daria Pipsenska: "This was just an amazing opportunity and took us all way outside of our comfort zones! We were able to achieve good results while working under pressure as a team and we did things we'd never done before and couldn't hope to achieve sitting in a classroom."   6. Lincolnshire Research Centre wins venue award
    Lincolnshire Open Research and Innovation Centre (LORIC) has won Venue of the Year at The Growth Community 2023 Awards. The Growth Community's Erin Newberry presenting the award to LORIC Data Analyst Mateusz Marek Founded in 2017, LORIC is part of Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) and works to promote a different way of thinking about data for businesses across Greater Lincolnshire and level the playing field for small businesses. At the centre, University researchers and data experts are on hand to guide businesses through using data and Open Data to grow and innovate. The centre is based in the renovated St Hughes building on Newport, Lincoln which has been designed to provide a high tech collaboration space for researchers, organisations and local businesses. LORIC hosts The Growth Community's fortnightly meetings, where local business representatives and entrepreneurs can attend for free and identify opportunities to work collaboratively with other attendees. The high standard of facilities and extra support the LORIC team offered set them apart from the other award nominees. The Growth Community's Founder Nicky Thomas said: “Finding a venue that recognises the value they can get by partnering with a networking organisation, like The Growth Community, is harder that you would imagine. LORIC from the start became active members of our group. Committed to building relationships and helping each other to grow. "They have never just been ‘room hire’; they have supported our members and guests and played a massive part in the success of the Lincoln group. We are so grateful to have had them along on our journey.” Linette Wallace, Business Development Officer at BGU said “When I was introduced to Nicky Thomas from the Growth Community, she was looking for some urgent corporate venue space to host her bi-weekly networking events. I was delighted to offer not only the space in our beautiful building, but to provide direct business development support to group members. "It has been fantastic news to learn that we have won “Venue of the Year” award, as we have always strived to welcome and assist the Growth Community members at every opportunity, also with bespoke consultancy support through the LORIC initiative."     Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) at BGU, has reached a significant milestone, marking six months of transformative activities since December 2022.
  8. Bishop Grosseteste University celebrates first apprenticeship graduates
    Lincoln Cathedral has hosted the formal graduation of Bishop Grosseteste University's (BGU) first cohort of apprentices. 14 students completed the three-year Senior Leader Master’s Degree Apprenticeship (SLMDA), which includes a Masters' qualification, equipping them with strategic leadership skills to use in their respective organisations. According to the University, the programme aims to bridge the skills gap in Lincolnshire, enhance staff retention, and improve productivity and profitability for local businesses. The SLMDA attracted students from diverse industries, from commercial signage to geoscience consultancy and the NHS. Graduates of the SLMDA can apply for professional recognition with Chartered Manager or Chartered Fellow Member grade. Among the graduates are three of BGU’s own members of staff. Faculty Business Manager Nicola Thompson, Placement Services Manager Vicki Walker, and Reprographics Manager Alan Stacey all attended the celebrations to receive their certificates. Nicola said: “The apprenticeship has been an empowering experience, giving me the opportunity to develop my skills and grow as a senior leader alongside an amazing cohort of people. “It's been hard work to get here, but it's all been worth it, as graduating fills me with excitement and confidence to move forward in my career at BGU and beyond.” Alongside their work in various industries, the in-person teaching and learning sessions offered networking opportunities and facilitated knowledge exchange across businesses. After witnessing the value of apprenticeships in the workplace, one graduate was inspired to hire additional apprentices at his own organisation. BGU’s Programme Leader for Business & Enterprise Becky Goodman said: “I was extremely proud to witness our first cohort of degree apprentices graduate at this years’ ceremony. This is the culmination of several years’ work, and is a testament to our apprentices, BGU delivery teams, professional support teams, and to the apprentices’ supportive employers and mentors. “I am passionate about helping individuals benefit from work-based learning to progress in their careers and am delighted that we have been able to develop such a fantastic offer at BGU that benefits individuals, organisations and the wider economy.” Bishop Grosseteste University offers three apprenticeship programmes: Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, Careers Development Professional Apprenticeship, and the Senior Leader Apprenticeship. With a current enrolment of 64 active students, the Senior Leader Apprenticeship is attracting growing interest. By providing career-focused education, the university says it strives to empower professionals and strengthen Lincolnshire's workforce.
  9. Innovation in the Education Sector

We're hosting a free online event on Wednesday 20th September from 3.30pm to 5pm where you can discover how to develop the solution you need through a collaboration funded by Innovate UK. Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a UK-wide programme managed by Innovate UK. It’s been running for 45 years and has supported more than 14,000 businesses to drive innovation for a positive impact. A typical KTP project delivers a support package valued at around £80,000 to £100,000 per year. This event aims to bring together organisations working in various areas of the education sector (Primary, Secondary, TESOL, SENDI, Educational Leadership, Autism/ADHD/Wellbeing) to learn about the KTP funding scheme and the best way to collaborate to drive innovation and growth. To facilitate engagement, there will be representatives from our Education Team available throughout the session to provide the opportunity for more targeted conversations to discuss ideas and challenges, and potential ways to collaborate through a KTP.
