Applications Open for 2019 Sandford Awards
Applications for the 2019 Sandford Awards, which recognise high quality heritage education provision, are now open. The awards are administered by Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in partnership with the Heritage Education Trust and over 500 sites, including historic houses, museums, galleries and collections, places of worship, gardens and parks have received an award over the last 40 years. Recent winners include Lincolnshire’s own International Bomber Command Centre and Belton House. The award is non-competitive, offers an independently judged, quality assured assessment and is granted for a five year period. Applications are welcome from sites small and large and run by national institutions, local authorities, volunteers and private owners. What are the benefits for entrants? What does it cost to apply? The application fee is £350 per site. If your organisation manages more than one site, you should submit a separate application for each. How do I apply? Deadline for entries is 15 February 2019 The Sandford Cascade Project- supporting museums and heritage sites in the East Midlands The Heritage Lottery funded Sandford Cascade project supports sites in the East Midlands to develop their heritage learning offer and apply for the Sandford Award. Benefits for members include a programme of visits to learn from Sandford Award winning sites, £1,000 bursary to enhance your learning provision, opportunities to attend skill sharing workshops, valuable networking opportunities with other museums and heritage sites and access to online resources. Psychology PhD Student at BGU Seeks New Insight on why we Dream
Psychology PhD student at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), Anthony Bloxham, has recently been granted funding for an experiment being conducted as part of his PhD work that will seek new insight into the nature of dreaming. Anthony's experiment is being conducted in collaboration with University of Lincoln, making use of the additional facilities in their Sleep and Cognition Laboratory, with funding being provided by the Dream Science Foundation (DSF) and the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD). Applications to participate in Anthony’s experiment, which involves two overnight stays in the sleep laboratory, are still open and Anthony discussed what potential participants could expect: “This research may help to inform new insight on the nature of dreaming and why we dream. It contains novel aspects and combinations of previously tested methodologies in the field of sleep and dream research, including the use of Virtual Reality. "Participants in my experiment will be encouraged to play Virtual Reality video games before spending a night in the sleep lab, providing dream reports and playing the games again in the morning.“ If you are interested in participating, please contact anthony.bloxham@bishopg.ac.uk to register your interest or request further information. BG Futures Inspires New Enterprises in Global Entrepreneurship Week
BGU Enterprise Club, run by the BG Futures, Careers, Employability and Enterprise team recently ran a series of events as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW); an international initiative which spans 170 countries, and inspires millions to engage in entrepreneurial activity. The week started with the ‘be enterprising boot camp’ where students discovered what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Sessions on how to join The Lincoln Teenage Market, become self-employed, and how to build your professional profile followed along with a talk from Rachel Linstead of Firecracker, a BG Futures based business, who shared her start-up story. On the final day individuals had the opportunity to pitch for free office space to start their own business in BG Futures Business and Enterprise Centre. Becky Goodman, Enterprise Development Manager at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) expressed her hope that the GEW activities would encourage more students to begin their entrepreneurial adventures: “It was great to see learners from a variety of our courses engage with the enterprise offer we are developing here at BGU. “We currently have two Master's Students in residence with us in BG Futures developing their business idea into an effective plan, and we are looking forward to welcoming another undergraduate into our enterprise centre in the New Year who secured a free place with us through the GEW initiative. “I am looking forward to helping more of our students take steps towards self-employment as we continue to develop the enterprise offer at BGU” All BGU students have access to free enterprise and business start guidance, access to free hot desking and a virtual office in BG Futures Business and Enterprise Centre, in addition to networking and volunteering opportunities with a wide variety of local organisations. Bishop Grosseteste University Appoint New Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Professor Scott Fleming has been appointed to the post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU). He will co-ordinate all aspects of academic life and lead a programme to deliver change and create impact. Currently the Executive Dean: Research, Knowledge Exchange and External Engagement, Professor Fleming has been at BGU since April 2018. Having worked at the Universities of Brighton and Gloucestershire as well as, most recently, Cardiff Metropolitan University, he is an experienced academic and has held the roles of Programme Director, Head of School, Academic Dean, Director of Research at school level, and University Director of Research and Graduate Studies. Announcing the appointment the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice-Chancellor of BGU, praised the impact Professor Fleming’s expertise could have on the University’s community: “I am delighted that Scott emerged as the successful candidate from an international pool of applicants. He brings with him substantial experience of the sector but has also gained a knowledge of the internal environment in the short time he has been working here. "His expertise and approach will take us to the next stage in our strategic development and I look forward to working with him in this new capacity.” For Professor Fleming, the opportunity to help lead BGU’s future progression is a thrilling prospect: “This is an exciting time for the University as we prepare for the launch of a new corporate strategy. We have ambitious plans and I’m delighted to have been given this fantastic opportunity to help shape a bright and prosperous future for BGU.” Scott is Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies and has published over 100 outputs. He has been Chair of the Leisure Studies Association (2004-2009) and a Managing Editor of Leisure Studies (2010-2016). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. BGU Continues to Craft New Educational Partnerships in India
Dr Steven Puttick, Head of Programmes (Secondary, FE, Research Education) at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has been busy in India visiting partners, cultivating international opportunities for BGU students. In particular, BGU’s developing relationship with Amity University’s Institute of Education will lead to exciting opportunities for international and comparative education for BGU and Amity students to collaborate, in addition to a range of other partnership activities. Part of the visit involved meeting applicants for the exciting new offer for International students on BGU’s Physics and Maths PGCE courses. High achieving Indian graduates in Mathematics and Science will be offered a limited number of places on BGU’s Secondary PGCE course. Following successful completion of the PGCE course, these graduates will be supported by a partner Academy chain to gain employment as Maths and Physics teachers in the UK. This fantastic opportunity presents the ‘brightest and best’ Indian graduates with the chance not only of studying at an historic UK teacher training institution but also of securing employment following the course. Students Help National Social Initiative Find New Funding Opportunities
Students from the Business (Team Entrepreneurship) programme at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) travelled to London last week where they took part in an assessed business challenge project for social enterprise The Ramadan Tent Project (RTP). RTP run the internationally acclaimed 'Open Iftar' event, which this year will be held in major cities around the UK. Iftar is the fast-breaking meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during the month of Ramadan. Open Iftar is an inter/non faith, inter-cultural event which celebrates diversity and welcomes anyone from any background. The first event was held in London in 2013 and since then the initiative has spread to seven cites and four continents, welcoming over 60,000 guests who are invited to join together to share food, to chat, laugh and listen to a variety of speakers on a wide range of subjects. The challenge given to students by RTP was to consider how it could develop sustainable income streams that will allow them to grow the Open Iftar initiative which is free to all who attend. They had 24 hours to research resources, contact potential stakeholders and develop solutions, which were delivered as a professional presentation the following day. Team Coaches Chris Jackson and Peter Tasi from BGU were on hand to monitor the process and progress. Chris was particularly pleased with how the students took to the task: " I have to say that we were pretty impressed with the way our guys tackled a tough task, developing four potential sources of income as well as engaging with people in the local communities by simply going out and talking with them. They also saw a bigger picture and were able to engage wider support nationally, raising over £6,000 in pledges". Peter Tasi added: "This is what can be achieved by active team work. Of course is doesn't just end here as we now have to formally assess the students on their process and how they synthesise their activity to aspects of business theory which are core to their learning". "Following their visible success with the task, they must now formalise and reflect on the process and individually present their learning experience back to us. It's not as straightforward as it seems." On the day, results were presented back to RTP CEO Omar Salha who was visibly impressed: "This is an amazing achievement and we're really grateful to have been able to engage with you in this way. Some of the impromptu visits that you have made in the short time that you were with us show us the size of the task before us." In a short space of time, students found that they were able to engage with corporations such as Disney and Virgin. These are contacts who they will now be working with to explore the full extent of possible support for RTP. Project Leader for the task was BGU student Daria Pipsenska: "This was just an amazing opportunity and took us all way outside of our comfort zones! We were able to achieve good results while working under pressure as a team and we did things we'd never done before and couldn't hope to achieve sitting in a classroom." Student Volunteers use Animation to Promote Climate Change Education
Bishop Grosseteste University’s BG Futures team recently hosted a series of events as part of Student Volunteering Week (SVW) to celebrate the impact of student volunteers and encourage students to engage in civic life. As a part of these activities BA (Hons) Geography students Connor Price and Dan Knibbs engaged with the national initiative by hosting an event on animating climate change. The event challenged other students and members of the local community to create animations highlighting the importance of climate change and green thinking. Speaking at the event Dan discussed why he and Connor put the event together: “I wanted to run the workshop as this is something I am extremely passionate about and believe that the importance to reduce plastics in the oceans is crucial for marine life sustainability. Therefore, by running this workshop, it hopefully has educated a number of people on how they can change their lifestyles to reduce their impacts on the marine environment.” Cassie Rainey, BG Futures Administrator, praised the two for creating an event that brought different groups together in support of an important initiative: “This event saw students, teachers, and the local community come together to learn from Connor and Dan and was both engaging and informative. The hands-on activity of creating an animation meant that the learning aspect was almost subliminal and for this reason in particular I’m excited for them to deliver this to children. Not only do I think the children will really enjoy it they will learn about how to get involved on an incredibly important issue” Becky Goodman Enterprise Development Manager at BGU added her excitement at the potential impact on the Lincoln community created by the event: “It was great to support Connor and Dan to put on this event and I am excited to see how they build on this with their Programme leader Sarah Hemstock as they roll this event out to The Diocesan Board of Education and their partner schools” Connor and Dan will also be including this learning activity in the International Symposium on Climate Change and the Role of Education which is being held here at BGU on the 12th and 13th of April.
