This MA programme at BGU has received continued recognition of its sustainable development impact with the allocation of a prestigious Commonwealth Master's Scholarship award for the 2022-23 year of study.

Commonwealth Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development and are offered to citizens from lower- and middle-income Commonwealth countries, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

Wayne Dyble, International Manager at BGU, said: “We are really pleased to be working with the Commonwealth Commission to provide a student with a life-changing opportunity.

“We’re confident that the successful student will develop their knowledge and skills to enhance their local community in the same way that past recipients of the award are doing.”

One such example is Shanta Rani Biswas. After graduating with a distinction in her MA EdTESOL programme and completing her dissertation on the language attitudes of ethnic minority students in Bangladesh towards indigenous languages, Bangla, and English, Shanta was promoted to Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Chittagong University in Bangladesh.

Speaking of her experience as a Commonwealth scholar at BGU, Shanta recounted: “It helped me to grow, widened my understanding of English language teaching and learning, and made me more competent and confident to teach and design such courses in my department. [BGU] is my second home and I will always love being a part of it:

Dr. Kay Johnson, MA EdTESOL Programme Leader, said: “The programme team are delighted to hear of Shanta’s success. The MA enables students to develop into education professionals with the appropriate knowledge and skills to work in range of fields from language teaching and teacher training, to research, to education policy and management.

“Students graduate with these skills as well as a critical awareness of the role of English in a multicultural, multilingual world and the importance of respecting the needs of learners and their diverse backgrounds. The BGU International Office and the MA programme team are excited to review the applications for the next successful scholarship recipient.”

The FCO’s application system will open for candidate applications on 10 November 2021 and close at 16:00 (GMT) on 20 December. Interested applicants should contact BGU’s International Manager wayne.dyble@bishopg.ac.uk
