  1. Day20520-20FA20Cup-1#12DaysofBGU Day 5: Memorable Year for Lincoln City and BGU
Bishop Grosseteste University’s (BGU) sponsorship of Lincoln City Football Club has proven beneficial to both the University and the club this year. The FA Cup trophy paid a very special visit to BGU in March ahead of Lincoln City's historic quarter-final against Arsenal. BGU staff and students queued up to get a glimpse of the famous trophy and pose for a photo. It was a surreal and memorable day for all involved! The famous trophy visited BGU as part of our ongoing sponsorship of Lincoln City Football Club. The partnership has gone from strength to strength throughout a memorable 2017. Managed by Danny and his assistant, brother Nicky Cowley, the Imps beat Ipswich, Brighton and Burnley on their way to becoming the first non-league team in 103 years to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals. There they faced Premier League giants Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium where, after a spirited first half display from City, they eventually succumbed to a 5-0 defeat. Lincoln City capped off their historic 2016/17 season by winning the National League and gaining promotion to League 2, ending a run of six years out of the Football League. Throughout the Imps’ fantastic season there was a familiar splash of purple among the famous red and white stripes as the BGU logo sits proudly on the home shirt. The BGU logo was never more visible than during the FA Cup third round replay against Ipswich. Purple advertising boards behind the two managers were noticeable during the BBC1 television coverage and Nathan Arnold even had the decency to score the winning goal while our message was displaying on the digital advertising boards around the pitch! The partnership between BGU and Lincoln City, however, is about much more than advertising, and it is something that means a lot to Danny Cowley. He said, “we are really thankful for the partnership, the University was so close that we wanted to create a true partnership. “The partnership was already formed (when we arrived at the club) so we built on that, there’s some great people coming out of the University, some young hardworking people who we can build relationships with that can help this club moving forward.” One brilliant example of the partnership in action came in December 2016, when BGU sports students had the unique opportunity to be coached by the City manager with a session led and delivered by Danny Cowley. Chelsey Grayson, a first year student, thought that “the session gave us really good insight into the daily life of a coach and also all the planning and commitment that goes into it. It was good to see a coach in action and it will help a lot with my studies and assignments.” Outside the classroom our cheerleading squad, the BGU Lions have also had fantastic opportunities thanks to the partnership with Lincoln City. They have performed in front of crowds of around 10,000 fans at Sincil Bank, not to mention live on BBC1 in the third round of the FA Cup. Louiscia Mcleod, President of the BGU Cheerleading Society, explained that performing at Sincil Bank has been “an incredible experience. The fans are so lively and supportive. The atmosphere really just makes the whole night!” Have you been inspired by Lincoln City? Find out more about studying Sport at BGU.
  2. BGU welcomes Professor Scott Fleming as its new Executive Dean
Professor Scott Fleming will join the senior management team at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) from Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he is currently Director of Research and Graduate Studies. Scott takes up his new role as Executive Dean Research, Knowledge Exchange and External Engagement from 1 April 2018. He will immediately be focussing on growing BGU’s research capability and capacity, and steering the development of BGU’s Lincolnshire Open Research and Innovation Centre (LORIC) Professor Fleming is a highly experienced academic who is recognised for his development and leadership of research governance and knowledge exchange at Cardiff Met over a number of years. His personal research interest is primarily in the sociology of sport and leisure, and in addition to his own track record of publication, he brings a wealth of experience in cross-University researcher training, staff development and support for Graduate Studies. Professor Jayne Mitchell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln, said: “We are delighted to welcome Scott to BGU. He brings a wealth of experience and an outstanding academic background as a researcher, educator and innovator. Perhaps most importantly, he also shares our ambition to sustain and further develop research, knowledge exchange and external engagement at BGU.” Professor Fleming said: “I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to take forward BGU’s ambitious plans for development of this portfolio. I’m looking forward to the challenge and can’t wait to get started.”
  3. #12DaysofBGU Day 9: Knights’ Trail
This summer Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) sponsored a knight as part of Lincoln’s Knights’ Trail. The Knights’ Trail was a sculpture trail through Lincoln to mark 800 years since the Battle of Lincoln and the sealing of the Charter of the Forest. A pair of talented artists from Birmingham designed the BGU’s statue ‘Knight and Day’, which was one of 35 knights on the trail around Lincoln. The event, organised by Lincoln BIG, ran from 20 May until 3 September and the knight statues and BGU’s knight was stationed near Newport Arch not far from the university’s campus. Kieron Reilly and Lynsey Brecknell, the designers of BGU’s knight, said, “Our design ‘Knight and Day’ shows off Lincoln’s beautifully unique skyline in silhouette form against a bold sunset, including our sponsor Bishop Grosseteste University,” Before the trail got underway, sponsors had the opportunity to host their knight. ‘Knight and Day’ embarked upon a tour around campus and we welcomed a number of visitors to see it. Children attending BGU Sports Centre’s Easter Sports Programme stopped by for a photo with the knight. We were then delighted to welcome pupils from St. Francis Special School to visit campus and see the knight. Read more about the Knights’ Trail.
  4. #12DaysofBGU Day 8: Darcey Bussell
Ballerina and Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell visited Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln in October to speak to trainee teachers about DDMIX for Schools. Darcey and her DDMIX team worked with over a hundred trainee teachers from Primary and Secondary programmes from the School of Teacher Development at BGU. DDMIX is a full-body aerobic workout for children created by Darcey Bussell and based on 26 different dance genres, from Arabic and Japanese to the Charleston and the Flamenco. The day opened with a special lecture for all year groups where Darcey introduced the programme. Students then split off into smaller groups to participate in sessions with the DDMIX team. Speaking about DDMIX Darcey said, “Movement to music makes children come alive and changes the way they feel. With the DDMIX programme, children get an exciting and diverse learning experience that is physical, aerobic and high time on task. These benefits should be enjoyed by every child. “Dance fitness can stimulate the child’s interest in sport, in the arts and give them the confidence to explore their own creativity in other fields." DDMIX came to BGU through the work of Helen Thornalley, Subject Leader for PE and Dance for the PGCE Secondary course at BGU, who arrived at the University in January. Helen has worked with Darcey and DDMIX for the past three years on training teachers and reflecting on how this work is implemented within schools. Feedback from the trainee teachers is vital for DDMIX to find out what works for children in schools. Helen said, "The opportunity for trainee teachers to work with these professionals who are at the top of their game, and the sharing of their materials with prospective teachers for schools is amazing. “(It was) unique, rich and cathartic for all involved, a very exciting project that I have seen teachers embrace and make it their own." Members of the DDMIX team introduced BGU students to a range of different dances and activities that can be utilised when students go into schools on placements. Jessica Castro, first year BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS student, said, “The session was really good. I thought it was great how they split everything up into sections, which will help us with how to teach the children. “They haven’t just thrown us into the deep end, they’ve shown us how to work with the children and taught us the dances as well so I thought that was really clever. “I’d love to use (DDMIX) in schools. When we go into placements and we have to use PE I’d definitely use something like this rather than what you’d expect PE to be.” Find out more about Training to Teach at BGU.
  5. ‘Innovative’ University Design up for Regional Award
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) and LK2 - a unique company of chartered architects and sports & leisure business advisors - are pleased to announce that their recent renovation project has been shortlisted for this year’s RICS East Midlands awards. The impressive £2.2m redevelopment of BGU's Constance Stewart Hall has been shortlisted for the accolade of ‘Design through Innovation’ at the upcoming award ceremony. Innovation was central to the redevelopment of BGU’s Constance Stewart Hall and LK2 needed to find a visually striking way of introducing a contemporary new extension to a historic building on the University’s campus. The vice-chancellor of BGU, the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, said: “We are incredibly proud of both our 150 year history of teaching excellence and our progressive attitude which has seen us become the top university in the East Midlands for widening participation. “When it came to creating a new flexible teaching space we needed a building that would support our ambitions as well as a team who could understand this. The design by LK2 for Constance Stewart Hall perfectly captured this balance and our finished building provides students with cutting edge facilities to help them progress. We are pleased to see it rightly celebrated by the RICS”. The RICS Awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. Across eight individual categories, the awards are regarded as the premier property and construction awards in the country, celebrating the most innovative projects in the region and their impact on local communities. Andrew Kitchen, director at LK2, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised for our design of this iconic scheme which has transformed the cityscape. This project showcases the impact of good design in so many different ways. Acting as a ‘shop window’, the new building gives BGU’s campus greater prominence and promotes the University to the wider community.” LK2’s innovative approach to this redevelopment, has resulted in one of the project’s most unique characteristics- the architects were able to blend both new and old elements to create the illusion that the contemporary extension is sailing over the original building. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Nottingham Belfry on Thursday 3 May. Visit our new development by booking on to a 2018 BGU Open Day now.
  6. BGSU breaking down barriers on University Mental Health Day
Exotic creatures, bouncy castles and specialist counsellors are being brought on to campus by the Bishop Grosseteste Student Union (BGSU) on Thursday 1 March as part of University Mental Health Day. Challenging the stigma University is a challenge. For many the challenge is tough but rewarding, however for some it is simply stressful with deadlines and separation from home building together to overwhelm. Approximately 29% of students experience anxiety while at university. Many won’t seek help, either for fear of the stigma that still surrounds mental health issues, or because they just don’t know who to turn to. There are, however, people out there who are ready and willing to help. Showing support for students BGSU are making it their mission to show students they are not alone and should never feel ashamed to ask for support. As part of the University Mental Health Day project they will be hosting a day packed with activities designed to boost students’ wellbeing, these include: Therapy Animals including dogs, meerkats, foxes and racoons to help students de-stress curtesy of ‘Oreo and Friends’ (www.oreoandfriends.co.uk) A ‘Check in your Emotional Baggage’ station Representatives from local wellbeing charities and sport organisations including Addaction, Revival and the BGU Gym Hand massages from Lush A ‘Sensory Chill Out Room’ Peer to Peer Support Sessions Bouncy Castle and Bubble Wrap Walks Free Self Defence Sessions. Breaking down barriers All of these activities are designed to help show students where they can find support when needed and how to manage their anxieties and look after themselves in the future. Abigail Rogers, BGSU Manager, feels strongly that promoting positive mental health should be a core objective of any SU: “The whole SU team are passionate about raising the profile of positive psychological wellbeing in the BGU community as so many students struggle with their mental health. This will be the third year we have been part of Student Minds University Mental Health Day and our aim is to continue breaking down the stigma and encourage students to feel confident to start a conversation and show them where they can get support.” For more information on the work and activities carried out by BGSU visit their website. 7. BGU student runs in City of Lincoln Council election
A student from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is standing for candidacy in the City of Lincoln Council election this week. Nicole Pouncey, PGCE Secondary student at BGU, is standing for the Liberal Democrats Party when the city goes to the polls on Thursday 3 May. Nicole is standing in the Minster ward, where BGU is situated, having lived in the area most of her life. She has been a member of the Liberal Democrats Party for eight years and this will be her third council nomination. The City of Lincoln Council is currently controlled by Labour, who hold 26 of the 33 councillors, alongside six Conservatives and one Independent. Nicole said: “As a Liberal I hope to help people to better understand their choices beyond the two horse race between Labour and Conservative and aim to promote liberal values within local politics in order to support all members of our society equally to bring cohesion and balance.” BGU has a big presence in Minster ward and Nicole believes the University plays an important role. She said: “BGU supports many young people to gain employment beyond their studies, which is a real asset to our community. “The on-campus facilities such as The Venue, Curiositea, the chapel and Sport Centre makes for a fantastic community atmosphere which is enjoyed by both students and the wider community.” As a PGCE student at BGU since September 2017, Nicole has now personally experienced the benefits of studying at BGU: “BGU has supported me to achieve my full potential in teaching and secure a permanent role for the next academic year. “After years of study I feel like BGU has brought it all together and allowed me to apply everything I have l learnt.” Find out more about training to teach at BGU.
  8. Your Opportunity to Help BGU Bring the History of Lincoln’s Female Footballers to Life
Staff and students at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) are excited to be working in partnership with the Lincoln Mystery Plays and the Lady Imps Supporters Association to shed a new light on the fascinating, and sometimes controversial, history of Women’s Football in Lincolnshire. With a legacy dating back over 100 years the Lincoln Ladies, or Lady Imps, are one of the Sport’s most enduring teams, gaining huge popularity during the Great War before an FA ban at the end of the conflict forced them to fight for their survival. As the nation marks the centenary of the end of The Great War, BGU and the Lincoln Mystery Plays Company will be curating an exhibition along with an original play ‘The World at Her Feet’ which they hope will not only bring the extraordinary stories of the trailblazing Lady Imps to light, but also inspire a new generation to follow in their footsteps. The exhibition, which follows BGU’s exploration of Women’s Voting Rights in the county, is to be held at Lincoln Central Library and will be open to the public from the 27th of September whilst ‘The World at Her Feet’ will be on show at the Drill Hall from the 11th of November. Together they will offer a unique viewpoint on a fascinating corner of local and sporting history and you now have the opportunity to be a part of it. The Research team at BGU, led by Dr Andrew Jackson, yesterday launched their appeal to local residents for any stories, photographs and memorabilia they might be willing to share with the exhibition. Speaking to Melvyn Prior on BBC Radio Lincolnshire they encouraged any one with memories or items they would like included in this unique project to contact andrew.jackson@bishopg.ac.uk or ladyimps@mail.com. The Research Team at BGU are dedicated to preserving and championing the history of Lincolnshire and its residents. You can keep up to date with all their activities via our website or, if you would like to get involved yourself, you can contact our Enquiries Team to find out how to start your new adventure.
