New Student Village officially opens
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has officially opened its new Student Village, adding 293 luxury en-suite rooms to its student accommodation portfolio. The grand opening took place on Friday 23rd August, at the Riseholme Road site, just over the road from the University's campus. The Student Village offers modern amenities to a high standard, including communal green spaces, a cinema room and 24/7 reception, designed to enhance student life. The University's Chancellor Dr. Tracy Borman was at the launch to officially open the site. She said: "We are thrilled to open the Student Village, which will significantly enhance the university experience by fostering a vibrant and supportive community close to our campus. "This development is a key part of BGU’s broader growth plan, complementing our existing on-campus accommodation. It's wonderful to see it all come together, ready to welcome our students to their new homes very soon." Learn more about the Student Village here. -
Doors Open at BGU
Students thinking about going to university can look round brand new facilities and hear about new courses at a Bishop Grosseteste University open day this Sunday (6th October). The university has spent £4.3 million on a new accommodation building this summer as part of a £6.5m investment programme. Visitors to the open day between 11am and 4pm on Sunday can see the new student residences at first hand and find out more about the courses on offer. These include new single honours degrees in History and SENI (Special Educational Needs and Inclusion) and a new Psychology degree course which enrolled its first students this year. Visitors to the open day will be able to speak to staff and students, go on a guided tour of the campus and even enjoy a minibus tour of Lincoln city centre.There will be a rolling programme of presentations, DVDs and one-to-one meetings and visitors are encouraged to drop in at any time throughout the day. The university’s student advice team will be available to talk to students and their families about issues such as student finance and the accommodation team will advise on places to live. Lunch is available between 11.30am and 2pm and snacks and meals are available throughout the day from the Dining Room in Constance Stewart Hall and from Curiositea, the university’s Alice in Wonderland themed coffee shop, which has been extended and refurbished over the summer. “It doesn’t matter how many prospectuses you read and how many websites you browse, there’s no substitute for actually visiting a university,” said Louise Stow, Student Recruitment Manager at BGU. “Our campus in uphill Lincoln is a unique and beautiful place and we would encourage anyone thinking about studying at university to pay us a visit this weekend.” A further open day will be held at Bishop Grosseteste University on Wednesday 6th November 2013. New look at BGU as students arrive on campus
Students arriving for the start of the new academic year at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln this week have found that a number of improvements have been made to the campus. The university has spent around £6.5 million over the summer on upgrading accommodation, catering facilities and learning spaces. A new modern accommodation facility for 126 students has replaced an older hall of residence, and together with the extensive refurbishment of Constance Stewart Hall has resulted in a net increase in rooms on campus of 23. The dining facilities in Constance Stewart Hall are being replaced by a new building closer to the new accommodation block and the university’s quirky Alice in Wonderland-themed café Curiositea has been refurbished and enlarged. On the teaching side a new Psychology lab has been created for students who are enrolling for the first time on BGU’s psychology degree course, which can be studied in conjunction with a number of different subjects. The £6.5m investment is the latest stage in a programme of improvements at Bishop Grosseteste University. Last year £2.5m was invested in an extension to the library – the Cornerstone Building- which is now home to Library Services and the Student Support and Learning Advice teams. A £250,000 project to remodel the campus main entrance and reception area was also completed last year and £75,000 was spent on converting Bishop Greaves Theatre into The Venue, a state-of-the-art digital cinema which can also stage theatrical productions. “We have a beautiful campus in uphill Lincoln but we never stand still and we are always looking at ways in which we can improve the student experience here,” said Stephen Deville, Director of Resources at Bishop Grosseteste University. “Students are very discerning these days and we’re confident that the investments we’ve made on campus in recent years will make BGU a very attractive destination for them.” -
Pedal Powering Through London for BGU
Two colleagues from Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln will be using pedal power to raise money for the university’s Foundation Fund this weekend. Accommodation Officer Rachel Crane and Leanne Chancellor, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, will take part in the London Nightrider – a 100km moonlit overnight cycle ride through the centre of London on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June 2015. Around 4,500 cyclists will raise more than £2 million for charity in one night and take in over 50 famous landmarks, including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, the Royal Opera House and the London Eye. Rachel and Leanne will be raising money for the BG Foundation Fund, which provides funds for projects which the university would not normally be able to support through its core funding. “I had the original idea as I’m a runner and wanted to challenge my fitness further,” said Rachel. “I asked my friend and colleague, Leanne, if she wanted to join me, and as she was looking for her first challenge she agreed – although she actually thought I meant the London Moonwalk!” Rachel and Leanne can be found in the university gym most lunchtimes and they began training for the event in September last year. The ride will begin at 10.35pm at the Lee Valley Velodrome, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London and after following a circular route in and out of the city will finish back at the Lee Valley Velodrome. New Lease of Life for Former Connie’s Restaurant at BGU
A former canteen and dining room at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln is being turned into much needed teaching accommodation as the institution gears up for an increase in students. BGU is spending £850,000 on converting the former Connie’s dining room and kitchen into an academic facility. The refurbishment project will create seven multi-functional, flexible teaching spaces on the ground floor of the building which will be ready for use in September 2015. The university’s strategic plan envisages a growth in student numbers and BGU is also broadening the range of courses it offers, introducing Business (Team Entrepreneurship), Health and Social Care, Sociology, Psychology, Counselling and History and Archaeology from September. Part of the new teaching facility will be used by staff and students on the university’s new Business (Team Entrepreneurship) degree course. “In the past Connie’s was the place where our students who lived on campus had their meals, but now we’ve moved to self-catering accommodation and opened the Refectory to cater for the changing demand,” said Fred Robson, Head of Estates at BGU. “We no longer need this catering space so we’re converting the building to give us additional teaching space as we grow our student numbers.” The work, which entails some minor demolition and re-roofing of the former kitchen, is being undertaken by the main contractor, Robert Woodhead Ltd from Mansfield.
