  1. MA student awarded scholarship
    Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) student Daniel Kuu-Erah who is studying an MA in Education and TESOL, recently received a GREAT Scholarship funded by the British Council and the UK Government’s GREAT British Campaign to study at BGU! When Daniel returned from a network event held in Birmingham (Edgbaston Stadium) for all GREAT scholars, he couldn't wait to tell everyone about it. It was an amazing programme, and an opportunity for me to meet great personalities from the UK and other parts of the world! Daniel Kuu-Erah Sophie Hadfield who is the BGU International Support Officer said: He showed me his GREAT Scholarship certificate and told me about the inspiring former GREAT scholars he met, as well as several dignitaries. As he progresses his dissertation, Daniel continues to consider his future next steps – he has been applying to undertake a PhD specialising in linguistic discourse analysis. Daniel is keen to see further promotion of BGU in Ghana as he would like other potential students benefit from the same positive educational experience he has received so far from BGU.
  2. International Postgraduate Certificate in Education
    The International Postgraduate Certificate in Education (iPGCE) is an online distance-learning programme tailored to those looking to gain a recognised qualification from a UK university with a long and distinguished history in education and teacher development. Studying for the iPGCE is fully online and designed for students (from anywhere in the world) who are already undertaking teaching work in international settings, or who wish to do so in the future. Upon successful completion of the iPGCE, students will also have developed the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue further studies, such as an education-related MA.
  3. BGU strengthens ties with Universities in China
    The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln, Professor Jayne Mitchell, participated in the ‘UK Week in Hunan’ between 3 -7 July 2017. The ‘UK Week’ was arranged by the British Consulate in Hunan to showcase the relationships between companies from the UK and China. Throughout the week Professor Mitchell attended a range of activities aimed at strengthening BGU’s relationships with Chinese institutions.As part of the visit Professor Mitchell met with four universities to discuss collaborative partnership working arrangements. She also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a new partner university in Hunan Province; Hunan University of Science and Technology (HNUST). The agreement with HNUST could provide opportunities for collaboration in Teacher Education, English, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and research and study exchange for students and staff. She also met with officials from the Hunan Provincial Government Education Department, delivered a seminar on ‘education and globalization; opportunities for collaboration’ and participated in events as part of the UK ‘trade and industry’ celebrations.Professor Mitchell also attended a reception for HRH the Princess Royal hosted by the British Ambassador to China.Speaking about the visit, Professor Mitchell said “We are extremely pleased to be able to connect with new partners in China, in addition to strengthening our relationships with existing partners.“Bishop Grosseteste University is committed to developing its staff and students as global citizens. This partnership will benefit our staff, students and graduates – in addition to the economic and cultural prosperity of Lincolnshire.”
  4. BGU signs memorandum of understanding with Thai university
    The Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln, the Revd. Canon Professor Peter Neil, signed an agreement with a university in Bangkok today. Professor Neil signed and exchanged a memorandum of understanding with Dr Preang Kitratporn of Phranakhon Rajabhat University in Bangkok. Both leaders talked about the growing relationship between the two institutions and the opportunities ahead for cooperation. The initial focus will be on teacher education and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Professor Neil said, “We are extremely pleased to be able to formally strengthen our relationship with Phranakhon Rajabhat University. “Bishop Grosseteste University is committed to developing its staff and students as global citizens. This partnership will benefit our staff and students and we look forward to building on the partnership in the future.” Phranakhon Rajabhat University was founded in the 19th century as a teaching training institute and now offers programmes across a range of academic and professional programmes. Professor Neil will also be meeting representatives from the Thai Teaching Council, the President of the Rajabhat Universities Council, representatives of the British Embassy in Bangkok and a number of Rajabhat University Presidents as part of a one week visit to Thailand.   5. BGU International partnership continue to forge connections in China
    This week, Wayne Dyble (International Manager) and Dr Steven Puttick (Head of Programmes for Secondary, FE, and Research Education in the School of Teacher Development) from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) travelled to China to build on the Institution’s international partnerships. The visit centred on time with colleagues at Chongqing University of Education (school.cuecc.com/chongqing/cque). Located in the South West of China, Chongqing is an exciting city known as the Mountain City, the Misty City, and the City of Lights. It has experienced rapid growth, and the central area alone hosts a population greater than London. The latest trip by Dr Puttick and Wayne Dyble comes after colleagues from the Chongqing University of Education’s school of Teacher Development visited BGU last year. Dr Puttick was pleased to see the partnership not only solidifying, but growing in strength: “It is very exciting to see this partnership flourishing, and we are grateful for the generous hospitality extended to us by CQUE colleagues. We have many shared interests in teacher development and TESOL, and there is a great deal we can learn from each other. We are looking forward to realising our joint ambitions to enhance and internationalise student experience and research through collaboration.” International manager Wayne Dyble was also delighted to see BGU’s reputation further expanding across the region: “Partnerships are key to BGU’s growing international reputation, and we now have well-established relationships with Chongqing University of Education.   6. BGU travels to the Czech Republic
    Three members of staff from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) are in the Czech Republic this week for a series of meetings and visits. Clare Davey, International Administrator, Dr Smaragda Kampouri, Programme Leader in TESOL & Linguistics and Dr Maria Efstratopoulou, Senior Lecturer in Special Educational Needs & Inclusion, are visiting partner institution Mazaryk University during their visit to the Czech Republic. Meetings will be taking place with Mazaryk University’s Faculty of Education, sharing good practice on systems of teaching practice and professional competencies of student teachers. Clare will be meeting with the University’s International Office, sharing ideas and their functions within the University, as well as collating information for BGU students who wish to undertake an Erasmus Study Programme. School visits will include a mainstream primary school and an inclusive primary school with a high percentage of Roma children.   7. BGU Academic Leads on ‘Outstanding Early Years Provision’
    Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is delighted to announce the launch of a new book by Dr Pat Beckley, Senior Lecturer in the School of Teacher Development at BGU, that is set to lead the way on the provision of Early Years education. ‘The Philosophy and Practice of Outstanding Early Years Provision’ examines the philosophical and theoretical foundations of early years practice supporting practitioners as they reflect on the collective and personal rationales which motivate and inform their work with young children. Chapters on subjects including ‘Wellbeing for Life in Early Years’ and ‘The Multicultural Classroom’ explore the theoretical underpinnings from a variety of perspectives, before translating them into effective strategies for application in a range of early years settings. Written and edited by Dr Beckley, the new book features contributions from leading Early Years professionals including chapters by other members of the BGU Teacher Development team – Ami Montgomery, Senior Lecturer and TESOL Course Leader and Aimee Quickfall, Head of Programmes for Primary and Early Years – along with a chapter written by Emma Revill; one of BGU’s school based mentors. Drawing on sound expertise the book is divided into four easily navigated sections which explore key issues including the creation of enabling environments, leadership in the early years, the opportunities and challenges presented by diversity, and the value of creative approaches. Its ultimate aim is to deepen the reader’s understanding of the concepts and ideas behind everyday practice. ‘The Philosophy and Practice of Outstanding Early Years Provision’ is essential reading for students and practitioners who wish to improve current and future practice by gaining insight into the philosophical foundations which underpin outstanding provision.   8. BGU Continue to Nurture Educational Links in Thailand
    This week, BGU colleagues travelled to Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University (NRRU) in Thailand to continue developing the partnership between the two institutions. This visit follows the National review of ITE in Thailand led by Professor Chris Atkin, and subsequent visits to Thailand including by the University Vice Chancellor, the Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil. Professor Chris Atkin, Professor of Higher Education at BGU, was pleased to see work carried out over the last two years continuing to bring positives results: “It is wonderful to be returning to Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University almost exactly two years after I first visited as part of the government funded programme to review Initial Teacher Education. The warmth of our reception is an indicator of the ongoing development of the relationship between the two universities.” Dr. Warisara Yangklang, who teaches on English Programmes at NRRU, joined Professor Atkin in praising the efforts made by the two universities: “It has been a wonderful time to meet our BGU colleagues, and we hope to further develop this good connection in the future. We want to move forward with our project and our collaborative programmes for English language and Research.” A number of Professor Atkin’s colleagues from the school of Teacher Development, including Dr Steven Puttick, Dr Abigail Parrish and Kevin McLaughlin along with BGU’s International Manager Wayne Dyble have been discussing the opportunities for this international partnership to enhance the opportunities available to all of BGU’s students. Dr Nick Gee, Head of the School of Teacher Development at BGU holds a Visiting Professorship at NRRU, and BGU are excited about the growing collaborations between the universities. Over the next two weeks BGU will be delivering courses on Research, and English Language Teaching to staff and students at NRRU. Piyachat Dhephasadin Na Ayudhaya, Director of International Affairs at NRRU, described the positive impact the work of the BGU academics would have: “Having BGU colleagues visiting NRRU will provide a great opportunity for teachers in Korat. Having BGU colleagues delivering sessions on teaching English will help to provide lecturers in NRRU school teachers across the wider Korat region with new approaches towards teaching English.” BGU have a global outlook on education, and our courses offer unprecedented opportunities to travel and teach.   9. BGU launch new short-course offering international opportunities
    Are you looking for an opportunity to expand your career choices at home or abroad, fund your travels and attain an internationally-recognised TESOL qualification? If you answered yes to those questions then the new Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is for you. This 4-week TESOL course is an intensive, highly-practical teacher-training programme which provides you with the professional qualification and practical experience to take your first steps as an ESOL teaching professional. Through a range of teaching methods and assessments you will learn about English grammar, teaching methodologies and materials: the key content and knowledge you will need to become a successful teacher. In addition to this, you will develop your teaching skills by observing experienced English-language teachers and, with guidance and feedback, progress to teaching English classes. You do not need the ability to speak another language, nor prior experience of teaching to secure a place on this exciting course.   10. BGU awarded British Council Funding to strengthen China Partnership
    Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is delighted to announce that, following a highly competitive application process, it has been awarded £30,000 through the British Council’s ‘Generation UK’ initiative. This initiative aims to help 80,000 students from the UK boost their employability, enhance their long-term job prospects, and develop a global mind-set through study and work experience opportunities in China. BGU’s project will provide opportunities for students and staff to engage in partnership visits to Hengyang Normal University (HYNU). Delegations from BGU first travelled out to HYNU in July 2017 and in September 2017 colleagues from HYNU visited BGU to collaborate and formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding. Securing this funding represents an important next step forwards in the development of the partnership. BGU’s project is led by Dr Steven Puttick, Head of Programmes: Secondary, FE & Research Education, who spoke of his excitement on the potential of the project: “I am delighted that BGU have been awarded these funds which represent a significant investment that recognises the growing international reputation of the institution. We are really looking forward to developing our collaboration with colleagues at HYNU, and are excited about the opportunities this will help us to create.” The project is one part of the broader Lincolnshire – Hunan twinning partnership, and will also enable BGU to significantly build on these relationships. Following the award Dr Nick Gee, Head of the School of Teacher Development at BGU & a Visiting Professor at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University, praised BGU’s growing international profile: “This funding recognises our flourishing international reputation within South East Asia, where we now have multiple partners offering fantastic learning opportunities for our highly successful TESOL provision.” BGU International manager Wayne Dyble added: “This funding will provide us with the opportunity to develop a sustainable relationship with HYNU and importantly gives students an excellent opportunity to enhance their cultural awareness and knowledge of China as a country and provide added value as they develop graduate attributes which will be invaluable to their careers in a global marketplace.” BGU have a global outlook on education, and our courses offer unprecedented opportunities to Teach & Travel.
