Studying English at BGU provides an exciting and wide-ranging engagement with the power of human creativity and the rich heritage of literary expression. You will study great works of literature from Sophocles to Ali Smith, Bernardine Evaristo, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, directing your own path of learning through module options including creative and environmental writing, crime fiction, American and World Literature, drama and children’s literature, film studies, Victorian, Romantic, and contemporary literature. While studying a History course at BGU, you will explore a range of fascinating topics spanning a number of historical eras, in a variety of local, national and global contexts; from pirates in the early modern Atlantic World to civil rights campaigners in the 1960s. As well as learning about the people in the past on this undergraduate degree, you will investigate how people today engage with history and consider how the past can be brought alive. -
Health & Social Care
Health & Social Care is all about compassion, support and understanding both individual needs and broader sociocultural context. Here at Bishop Grosseteste University, we practice what we teach. Our undergraduate course has been developed in consultation with Health and Social Care services in Lincoln, thus ensuring relevance to provision within the community and meeting employers’ expectations. -

English Language & Teaching
Our English Language and Teaching programme immerses you in the fascinating study of English, from how it developed from humble origins to the global language with all its variations that we use today, to how it is learned by children as a first language or by learners of English as a second or further language - and much more. You will explore questions about language structures and language use in society, language disorders, and language acquisition and you will learn practical methods - and get hands-on experience - of how to teach it. Crucially, you will develop skills and knowledge to help you gain employment or pursue further studies for work or research in linguistics, education, and language teaching, and a range of other relevant fields. -
Dr Adam Hounslow-Eyre
Dr Adam Hounslow-Eyre joined BGU in 2012 having previously worked as a primary school teacher and headteacher in Derbyshire. Adam has a wealth of experience working in small and semi-rural schools with mixed age classes. Adam completed his PhD studies in political philosophy at the University of Hull. Adam acted as East Midlands Regional Coordinator for the Cambridge Primary Review Trust until the Trust’s transition into the Chartered College of Teachers (CCoT) in 2017. He is an accredited trainer for the Critical Skills Programme (that supports teachers in developing problem based learning (PBL) curricula) and is a local Barefoot computing advocate and trainer. Teaching Adam primarily teaches on the undergraduate education studies degree, leading, co-leading and contributing to a number of modules. He leads a Master's module, regularly contributing to MA weekends; Adam also supports the School of Teacher Development in its delivery of its Mentoring and Coaching course to teachers from Partnership Schools. -
Dr Caroline Horton
Caroline joined BGU in April 2015. She is a Reader in Psychology: Consciousness and Cognition, where she is director of the DrEAMSLab, Chair of the Research Ethics Committee, and Lead for the Psychology, Health and Wellbeing Research and Knowledge Exchange Unit. Caroline contributes to the undergraduate BA Psychology courses, having previous programme led the courses, as well as the PhD programme. (see: www.dreamslab.co.uk / @sleepandmemory). More widely, Caroline is the Co-Director of the Lincoln Sleep Research Centre (LiSReC), the Treasurer and Trustee of the British Sleep Society, an elected committee member of the Cognitive Section of the British Psychological Society, where she is also a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol), and a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams Research Board. Caroline is affiliated to research groups at the University of Lincoln, and Swinburne University, Australia. Caroline is a regular reviewer for several academic journals, a renowned expert in sleep, dreaming and memory, as well as on the Editorial Board for Sleep Psychology, and two of the Frontiers in Psychology journals. Caroline has been an external examiner at the University of Edinburgh (2019-2023; MSc Psychology of Mental Health) and is currently an examiner at the University of Derby (Psychology MRes) and Newman University (MSc Psychology (conversion)) and has externally examined several research degrees. Before joining BGU, Caroline obtained her undergraduate (2003) and Master's (2004) degrees in Psychology from the University of Durham, her PhD from the Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds (2007), and a PGCHE from Leeds Metropolitan University (2008). Caroline has taught at the Universities of Durham and Leeds as well as the Open University, and predominantly at Leeds Metropolitan University where she was a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer (2007-2015). Caroline’s research interests principally span the fields of sleep, dreaming, and memory, and the relationships between those concepts. She has pioneered and developed the Sleep Well programme, a behavioural sleep improvement programme, which is being rolled out to various populations, including young adults with anxiety, and people living with diabetes. Caroline regularly features in the media, on BBC radio shows and international podcasts. She is the founder and host of the Sleep Science Pod. -
Dr W. Jack Rhoden
Programme Leader in Undergraduate HistoryWilfred.rhoden@bishopg.ac.uk I am a historian from Lancashire but crossed the Pennines over 15 years ago. I gained my PhD at the University of Sheffield for my study of ‘Caricatural representations of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, 1848-1871’. I then completed a post-doc based at Chatsworth House before lecturing at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam and Cardiff University. Janet Atkinson
Janet joined BGU in September 2016 from Bath Spa University where she was a Senior Lecturer. She worked with the PGCE students in Maths and Professional Studies alongside being an Academic Tutor for a group of teacher trainees. Her introduction to Higher Education was as an Associate Lecturer at the University of the West England teaching on both their undergraduate ITT and PGCE courses. She worked within the primary and early years teams supporting the 3rd Year students and PE Subject Specialists. Janet had previously been a Primary School Teacher in Lancashire for over 15 years, teaching across the Primary age range. She held a number of leadership and subject responsibilities, including supporting colleagues in both primary and secondary school settings. Teaching Janet teaches on the BA (Hons) Primary Education Course and contributes to the Primary PGCE and PTS programmes. Her teaching interests include Maths, PE and computing. -
Jean Wood
Jean Wood is a Senior Lecturer in Teacher Development specifically in Modern Languages. After a first degree in French (with Italian) from the University of Sheffield, Jean trained as a modern foreign languages teacher at the University of York. Jean taught French, as well as some German and Italian, for 27 years in schools in the local area. She joined BGU as a Visiting Tutor in 2016. During her teaching career Jean has been a Head of Modern Languages and an ITT Co-ordinator, as well as being a visiting tutor for the University of Hull’s ITT programme. Jean has considerable experience in developments in pedagogy, promoting languages and motivating pupils to continue with languages. She has organised and led many foreign trips, including work experience overseas and has set up class links through eTwinning.
