Enabling Gender Equality in Leadership: an exploration of leadership and self-awareness at Bishop Grosseteste University
Thomasin Nicholds, Lecturer in Psychology at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), has been successful in leading a cross University application to the Church University Fund, which will provide funding for a two year project to develop further understanding of leadership and gender. Through this research project the University will be better placed to promote inclusion, enable shared learning and knowledge transfer. Thomasin’s successful bid utilizes a cross-university approach to develop dialogue, and develop an understanding of the experiences of leaders in our campus community. Speaking after the successful application Thomasin discussed some of the project's aims: "The project will provide a programme of activities to raise awareness, share learning and promote progress, using Community Participatory Action Research. The University Chaplaincy is central to Bishop Grosseteste University’s ethos and identity and the project presents an opportunity to place our Church University status at the heart of our development, by working with the wider University community in our understanding of diversity and leadership" The research team lead by Thomasin Nicholds comprises Dr Sue Becker, Dr Jonathan Wainwright and a new student researcher role (applications for which can be made here). A Steering Group is being established and will have representation from within the University and externally. The funder has encouraged that the project is shared nationally across the Cathedral Universities group and wider Higher Education and non-academic contexts. Support for Refugee Doctors to be Evaluated in New LORIC Project
Thanks to research funding provided by Research England's Strategic Priorities Fund, local Community Interest Company, The Lincolnshire Refugee Doctors Project is collaborating with researchers from the Lincolnshire Open Research and Innovation Centre (LORIC) at Bishop Grosseteste University to evaluate the success and impact of their first year in operation. With a growing need for clinicians in the UK, the Lincolnshire Refugee Doctors Project was set up with the mission to “provide humanitarian support to medically qualified refugees and their families. For them to resettle and be able to continue their medical careers within the local NHS, and to make a contribution to the workforce needs of the local NHS". In order to do this, the programme supports members with accommodation, mentoring, accessing English language and clinical knowledge exams, as well as access to work placements in the NHS and support to gain GMC registration and to gain employment in the NHS. The programme started in the Grimsby area, linked with Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and expanded into Lincoln supported by United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust in 2020. This research project will look to evaluate the impact that the project has had in its first year, not only on its participating doctors, but on local NHS services, and will be completed by April 2021. More details of the support available to refugee doctors can be found in a film made by Syria Public Health Network which features Ba’raa, a 29 year old doctor who fled Homs in 2019. Telling It Like It Is - TILIIs
This was an interpretative qualitative study which explored BAME students’ holistic experiences of BGU from application and reasons for choosing BGU (including marketing and promotion materials), through to experiences of study and support while on programme including grades achieved, graduation and advice given on career progression. The purpose of the study was to inform BGU of BAME students’ perceptions of provision and where further development may be needed. Building on the work of Sewell and Mirza which investigated BAME school students’ experiences of education, Peart which explored FE and the recent Universities UK/NUS report on the Attainment of BAME students the research will explored the particular dynamics of being a small university set in a primarily agricultural county with a 98% ‘white’ population with an aim of making recommendations for future practice. These dynamics are of particular importance as the BAME population at BGU is about 2% and the study seeks to explore how very small minorities experience life in a mainly White organization. BAME students nationally may perceive their university course as unsatisfactory in some respects (Singh, 2011) and are particularly vulnerable to discrimination during work-based placements (Gardner, 2008). In order to investigate how these and other factors have influenced BAME student recruitment and experiences at BGU, the study collected data on student perceptions using a semi-structured individual interviews with student participants. From a potential population of circa 55 students, 9 expressed interest in the project and 5 agreed to take part as student consultants. -

Joint Research Venture to Help Better Equip Lincolnshire Visitor Economy
Bishop Grosseteste University’s (BGU) Chris Jackson has successfully been awarded funding from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) to run a collaborative research project with Dr Georgiana Els, University of Lincoln (UoL). The purpose of the project is to engage with communities and organisations in the Lincolnshire visitor economy (“City -County-Coast”) to explore what skills and attributes may be needed to better-equip the sector to cope with high levels of uncertainty in an fast-changing environment. “This is a great learning collaboration” says Chris. “We’re using the industry-specific practice and experience of UoL and combining this with research into future-fit adult learning.” “There’s also a twist to this that QAA jumped on – we’re using students to design and deliver a programme in a team-learning initiative. This builds on work that Georgiana and I have already carried out with Team Entrepreneurship students from BGU working on 24-hour business challenges with Leisure and Tourism Students from UoL.” Professor of Educational Learning, Phil Wood commented, “This is an exciting initiative that is looking to establish catalytic questions rather than definitive answers, with all participants benefitting from the outcomes. It can also help to inform us as educators how we can develop engaging, relevant learning that supports the communities that we serve.” The programme launches in May and will be looking to recruit a small group of students from both universities who would be interested in engaging in live collaborative research whist developing their own skills and attributes. Further information on the venture can be found by contacting chris.jackson@bishopg.ac.uk -
