The three-year Primary Education course at BGU is designed to allow you to study a vocational honours degree in Primary Education leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It provides an integrated academic and professional preparation for teaching. If you believe that you can inspire children to learn and are passionate about the role that primary education plays in shaping a child’s future, then this is the course for you.
  2. PGCE Primary (Full Time)
This PGCE course prepares you to teach children in either the 3 to 7 age range or 5-11 age phase. It is a very practical course with around two thirds of the time spent on placement in schools or Early Years settings, and around one third spent engaging in partnership training with the university. This route provides you with the skills to teach your chosen age range, integrating theory and practice and combining study at either postgraduate or professional level alongside practical training to enable you to meet the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the course. Our ITE Curriculum is underpinned by the Initial Teacher Training Core Content Framework to ensure you are well prepared to teach during your placements and to prepare you for your future career in the classroom.
  3. PGCE Primary (Part-Time)
This PGCE course prepares you to teach children in either the 3 to 7 age range or 5-11 age phase. This 2-year, part-time blended route provides you with the skills to teach your chosen age range, integrating theory and practice and combining study at either postgraduate or professional level alongside practical training to enable you to meet the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the course. This course will be delivered via blended learning with training usually taking place on a Friday. Students will attend campus for sessions (usually 6 sessions in each academic year delivered on campus), and the remainder of the taught content will be delivered through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous sessions as well as independent study, to allow flexibility for students choosing this route. Our ITE Curriculum is underpinned by the Initial Teacher Training Core Content Framework to ensure you are well prepared to teach during your placements and to prepare you for your future career in the classroom.
  4. FdA Primary Teaching Studies
Have you ever thought about working towards a degree, but decided against it as you are already in employment or volunteering and don’t want to give that up? Our FdA Primary Teaching Studies course is designed for you if you are a TA who want to continue working while beginning a route into Teacher Training.
  5. Primary Teaching Studies with QTS
Are you a teaching assistant currently working in a primary school, or working in an equivalent educational setting? If you’ve recently completed a relevant Foundation Degree and are looking to pursue a career in primary teaching, then this course could be the perfect next step for you. The course is a stimulating and challenging degree at honours level, developing the qualities required in 21st century teachers. This course will be delivered via blended learning where students will be taught remotely for the equivalent of 1 day per week. Roughly one day each half term, students will attend campus for sessions, and the remainder of the taught content will be delivered through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous sessions to allow students flexibility. Some placements may take place in the school in which students are working as a TA.
  6. *Primary ITE Documents
These CPD guides are only to be used when directed by your SBM. They are designed to support you in your development, but only when gaps in knowledge and understanding have been identified by you and your mentor. You are not expected to complete all of the tasks within the guides and you may find that you do not need to use them at all.
  7. Assessment Only Route to QTS (Primary and Secondary)
This is an assessment only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), appropriate for very experienced graduates who have more than two years’ successful teaching experience in two or more schools, colleges or settings. Candidates will be able to demonstrate that they are already meeting the Teachers’ Standards, without further training, before the commencement of the Assessment Only process.
  8. Primary Ed students host The Peckover Primary School
We were thrilled to welcome The Peckover Primary School to our campus recently, so their students could experience university life on campus for a day. They were hosted by three second year Primary Education Students, Molly Sim, Bella Cook and Olivia Sutcliffe along with their tutors. The day started with a welcome and question and answer session, followed by a tour of campus and craft activities. The children explored the range of subjects that can be studied at university and made their own mortar boards ready for an end of day mini graduation. The staff and children enjoyed the event so much they have requested to come again next year with their Y6 pupils. Mrs Parsley said: "Thank you so much to BGU for an amazing day and for being flexible and making the day so enriching and exciting. The second year students were absolutely brilliant with our children and so patient and supportive."

  10. BGU lecturers pen new book for trainee primary teachers
A book written by teacher development lecturers at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln was officially launched today. 'Building Skills for Effective Primary Teaching' by BGU’s Rachael Paige, Sue Lambert and Rebecca Geeson is a new book for trainee teachers and their mentors. The book includes discussion around different aspects of primary teaching and aims to also support the mentoring and coaching conversations that happen throughout initial training. The three editors lead the successful primary initial teacher education programmes at BGU. They have drawn upon contributions from colleagues teaching on the primary programmes in specialist areas to create the book. As part of the launch of this book, new trainee teachers on the PGCE course were provided with a copy of the book during an induction lecture.
