Dr Joanne Smith
Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care Jo is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care, teaching on the BA (Hons) Health and Social Care degree that she has been involved in developing. She has taught predominantly on social work and health and social care courses, as well as other undergraduate and postgraduate courses, for many years at a variety of UK universities, including University of Manchester, Plymouth University and Nottingham Trent University before joining Bishop Grosseteste University in the summer of 2015. Prior to becoming an academic she worked as a social worker in the drug and mental health field in both voluntary and statutory settings, working with people with dual diagnosis, as well as other difficulties such as HIV. Jo’s MA and PhD research focused on criminal records and their relevance in terms of employment as social workers, and the decision-making regarding risk to service users. This area of research is ongoing. Academic Teaching Jo has taught social work at BA and MA levels at different universities, and been the course leader for a social work degree. She has also taught Health and Social Care at two other universities, and taught on other degrees such a Doctor in Clinical Psychology, MA and BA Criminology and MA Human Givens. -
Dr Nicki Walsh
With over 17 years’ experience of teaching and learning within Higher Education (at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Institute, Nicki is currently the Programme Lead for Health and Social Care programmes at BGU, the undergraduate BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care and MA in Health and Social Care Leadership. Nicki’s clinical career as a Registered Nurse (Adult) saw her specialise in orthopaedics and trauma followed by District Nursing (with Specialist Practitioner Qualification) and then as Diabetes Specialist Nurse and remains a Registered Nurse. Her areas of teaching and learning reflect both her clinical and research experience. Her PhD focused on the Continuous Professional Development to Support People with Diabetes by considering the perspectives of Nurses working in UK General Practice. Other areas of research include public health (Nicki is a Member of the Institute for Health Promotion and Education), evidence-based practice utilisation, practitioner research and education as well as health and social care leadership. Nicki has published in national and international journals as well as having presented at a variety of national and international conferences across a range of subject areas. -
Dr Sacha Mason
Sacha is Head of Programmes for Education, Health and Lifelong Learning. The role includes the strategic leadership and management of programme development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Early Childhood Studies, Education Studies, Professional Studies, and Special Educational Needs Disability and Inclusion, Psychology, Counselling, Health and Social Care and Sport within the Faculty. She is also Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange and a Senior Fellow of the HEA. Sacha is a Doctoral supervisor. -
Leanne Leverton
Leanne teaches the BSc and MA Health and Social Care degrees at BGU. Leanne's background within practice was Health Visiting Practice with a specialist qualification in Community Public Health Nursing and Practice Education. She is also a registered paediatric nurse. Leanne has delivered education and training within the specialist field and public health community nursing for 10 years bringing considerable healthcare experience and Knowledge to the Health and Social Care programmes. -
Professor Chris Atkin
Programme Leader MA in EducationProfessor Chris Atkin’s education qualifications include Certificate in Education (Further Education), Bachelor of Education (Hons.), Master of Arts in Learning and Teaching, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Chris’ main research expertise lies in the policy and practice of post-school education and training; with a particular focus on rural communities. He has completed a range of research projects funded by the UK funding councils (ESRC, EPSRC, NERC), the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the British Academy, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the National Research and Development Centre for adult literacy and numeracy (NRDC), Local Authorities and the Learning and Skills Council. His research has included both national and international comparative studies including ‘practitioner based’ enquiry with a range of educational stakeholders. He currently teaches on master's and doctoral programmes. Chris has held academic posts at De Montfort University (1994-99), the University of Nottingham (1999-2010) and Liverpool Hope University (2010-12). Chris joined Bishop Grosseteste University in September 2012. -
Thomasin Nicholds
Thomasin is the Head of Programmes; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Associate Dean; International. Having spent a large proportion of her career in the Third Sector, responsible for the strategic development and running of a wide range of services for children, families and communities. These include organisational development programmes for other businesses, community research, Ofsted regulated Further Education, health and wellbeing programmes. In this context she has worked at a national level developing and informing policy, engaging in a wide range of partnerships and leading strategic networks. Thomasin is an experienced Charity Trustee has been on the Boards of organisations of varying sizes and reach. Thomasin has studied Occupational Psychology at postgraduate level and has a particular interest in leadership, inclusivity in the workplace and organisational change. She has worked closely with the University of Lincoln International Business School’s Community Organisations Group for over 15 years in an Associate role. For two years Thomasin was the Principal Investigator for an externally funded, gender and leadership research project, working with colleagues with a background in Social Psychology, Business, Education and Sociology. Thomasin has a background teaching on the Psychology BA (Hons) programme and supervises undergraduate dissertations. -
Alison Taylor
Alison joined Bishop Grosseteste in 2018 and is currently teaching on the undergraduate programme in Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion (SENDI). She delivers modules which cover such topics as complex needs; social, emotional and mental health; the professional context; barriers to learning. Her career has included ten years of primary class teaching, advisory work for the autism team of the Specialist Advisory Service (Herts) and five years as a special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). Alison has written and delivered a variety of SEND and safeguarding presentations, with a particular passion for autism education. She has contributed to the Lincolnshire Autism Partnership Board since 2015. Alongside this professional practice, Alison has gained a post graduate diploma in autism (University of Birmingham), the National Award for SEND Coordination (NASENCO) and a master’s qualification in Special Education and Inclusion (Northampton University). She is recognised as a fellow by the higher education academy (FHEA). -
Scott Fleming
Emeritus Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies Scott Fleming has a long-standing interest in ‘race relations’ and youth studies which form part of a wider portfolio of research linked to equality and diversity. His work embraces the social sciences and humanities, and some recent projects have been concerned with organisational cultures and aspects of sport development linked to public health. Throughout his career, he has maintained an interest in research methods and research ethics. A former Chair of the Leisure Studies Association (2004-2009), Scott was a Managing Editor of Leisure Studies (2010-2016) and is a member of the Editorial Board of The Sport Psychologist. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and of the Higher Education Academy. From January 2019 to December 2023 Scott was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at Bishop Grosseteste University. Prior to that he had held posts at Cardiff Metropolitan University (1994-1999 and 2005-2018), University of Gloucestershire (1999-2005) and University of Brighton (1989-1994). Scott was also a member of the Research Excellence Framework 2021 Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel and of the Athena Swan Governance Committee. He is a current Chair for Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter panels. -
Reverend Dr Tania ap Siôn
The Revd Dr Tania ap Siôn is Reader of Religions, Humanities and Education, and joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2018. She holds a BA and MA in Theology from Oxford University, an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Wales, Bangor, and a PhD in Education (focusing on theology, psychology and education) from the University of Warwick. Tania’s academic research has a strong relationship with professional practice in church-related, school-related, and community-related contexts. This is underpinned by the professional qualification of PGCE in Religious Studies, ordination as an Anglican priest in the Church in Wales, active membership of national and international organisations concerned with religion in schools, and the position of Executive Director of the St Mary’s Centre (a Christian research institute in Wales). Previously, Tania has held academic posts at Bangor University (1994-2007), Glyndwr University Wrexham (2011-2015), and the University of Warwick (2015-2018). Funded by the Wrexham (Parochial) Educational Foundation in partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University, since October 2020 Tania has been working on the St Giles’ Centre Research, Development and Impact Project in Religious Education, which is an exciting and innovative development taking place in the Wrexham County Borough, North East Wales. -
Philip Yeung
Philip has worked at Bishop Grosseteste University since 2018, first as a Visiting Tutor before taking on various roles such as Programme Leader, Deputy Head of Programmes and Associate Dean. He has taught on several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Foundation Year, PGCE, iPGCE and MA Education. Philip currently works as Head of Online Learning at the University. Philip studied his undergraduate degree in music at the University of East Anglia. Once graduated, he undertook his PGCE with the Open University and became a fully qualified teacher in the secondary sector. Philip spent 10 years working in secondary schools and FE colleges, mostly as a Music Teacher and Curriculum Leader of Music and Performing Arts. After completing his MA in International Educational Management at the University of Leeds, Philip taught on various Education-related MA programmes at both the University of Leeds and the University of Bath, specialising in educational leadership and management.
