BGU Explore New Avenues for International Educational Partnerships
Dr Julia Lindley-Baker, Programme Leader for SENDI at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), has been visiting colleagues at the ICES University in France to promote international collaboration and develop student and staff exchange opportunities. Meeting with Diane Nicolas, Director of the Languages Department, and Matthieu Brecville, Director of Relations, along with other staff from across ICES Dr Lindley-Baker explored opportunities for forging partnerships and cultural exchanges. A number of possibilities for BGU students to undertake study with ICES were discussed including Erasmus study placements, traineeships, or subject field study visits. One option that gained particular focus was the residential three week immersion programme run by ICES at their campus in La Roche sur Yon. The course, which offers students the chance to not only learn French but also experience the culture and country, runs in the summer and BGU hope to be able to offer places to students at a substantial discount in the future. Alongside promoting collaboration, the trip allowed Dr Lindley-Baker to experience French Higher Education first hand: “It was great to be able to observe teaching across a range of different subjects but especially getting to see one of the French classes for students on their immersion course. My O'level French, grade B, although quite rusty' came in handy. Lecturer’s research published by British Congress of Mathematics Education
Research carried out by Dr Ashley Compton, lecturer on the BA Primary Education with QTS and Primary PGCE courses at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), along with her former colleague Adam Unwin-Berry has been published by the British Congress of Mathematics Education. Dr Compton’s research examined Year 3 children's perceptions of mathematics based on their drawings of themselves in a mathematics lesson. The research was undertaken in 10 Lincolnshire schools in the BGU partnership and demonstrated that the majority of these pupils were confident about mathematics, although there were some gender differences in their perceptions of mathematics itself and teacher-pupil interactions in mathematics. For Dr Compton the gender differences, along with the innovative methods involved, made the project a fascinating research opportunity: “I was eager to take part because I think that children's attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics lessons are important factors in their learning and are not often explored in the classroom. Getting them to draw the pictures was an indirect way of finding out what they thought about mathematics. It was really pleasing that so many of the children drew confident learners. Some of the gender differences surprised me. We often hear about boys outperforming girls in maths but we found differences in the way the girls and boys perceived the teacher and perceived maths itself. An important reason for tutors conducting research is for it to inform our teaching. I've shared my findings with the BA Primary Education (BAPE) students but will explore them in more detail with the Year 3 BAPE maths specialists to help them think about how they teach lessons and how the children perceive this.” Prior to its publication Dr Compton’s research was presented at the British Congress of Mathematics Education conference. BGU Continues to Craft New Educational Partnerships in India
Dr Steven Puttick, Head of Programmes (Secondary, FE, Research Education) at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has been busy in India visiting partners, cultivating international opportunities for BGU students. In particular, BGU’s developing relationship with Amity University’s Institute of Education will lead to exciting opportunities for international and comparative education for BGU and Amity students to collaborate, in addition to a range of other partnership activities. Part of the visit involved meeting applicants for the exciting new offer for International students on BGU’s Physics and Maths PGCE courses. High achieving Indian graduates in Mathematics and Science will be offered a limited number of places on BGU’s Secondary PGCE course. Following successful completion of the PGCE course, these graduates will be supported by a partner Academy chain to gain employment as Maths and Physics teachers in the UK. This fantastic opportunity presents the ‘brightest and best’ Indian graduates with the chance not only of studying at an historic UK teacher training institution but also of securing employment following the course. Special Educational Needs Course at BGU Earns National Recognition
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is delighted to announce it has been recognised as a high quality provider of The National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination (NA-SENCO). Introduced at BGU in 2017, this master's-level course provides focused, high-quality professional development for teachers who lead the education of pupils with special educational needs in schools. The course has now been awarded the NA-SENCO Quality Mark, a nationally recognised accreditation only given to providers who offer the highest standards of teaching and learning in how to lead the education of pupils with special educational needs. Steve McNichol, Senior Lecturer in the School of Teacher Development at BGU, expressed his delight at seeing the hard-work of both the academics and students recognised: “Developing and growing the NA-SENCO at BGU has been an incredible experience and I am very proud of the quality of provision we are able to offer. Student Volunteers use Animation to Promote Climate Change Education
Bishop Grosseteste University’s BG Futures team recently hosted a series of events as part of Student Volunteering Week (SVW) to celebrate the impact of student volunteers and encourage students to engage in civic life. As a part of these activities BA (Hons) Geography students Connor Price and Dan Knibbs engaged with the national initiative by hosting an event on animating climate change. The event challenged other students and members of the local community to create animations highlighting the importance of climate change and green thinking. Speaking at the event Dan discussed why he and Connor put the event together: “I wanted to run the workshop as this is something I am extremely passionate about and believe that the importance to reduce plastics in the oceans is crucial for marine life sustainability. Therefore, by running this workshop, it hopefully has educated a number of people on how they can change their lifestyles to reduce their impacts on the marine environment.” Cassie Rainey, BG Futures Administrator, praised the two for creating an event that brought different groups together in support of an important initiative: “This event saw students, teachers, and the local community come together to learn from Connor and Dan and was both engaging and informative. The hands-on activity of creating an animation meant that the learning aspect was almost subliminal and for this reason in particular I’m excited for them to deliver this to children. Not only do I think the children will really enjoy it they will learn about how to get involved on an incredibly important issue” Becky Goodman Enterprise Development Manager at BGU added her excitement at the potential impact on the Lincoln community created by the event: “It was great to support Connor and Dan to put on this event and I am excited to see how they build on this with their Programme leader Sarah Hemstock as they roll this event out to The Diocesan Board of Education and their partner schools” Connor and Dan will also be including this learning activity in the International Symposium on Climate Change and the Role of Education which is being held here at BGU on the 12th and 13th of April. Speakers announced for International Climate Change and Education Symposium
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) are excited to announce its list of speakers for the upcoming International Symposium on Climate Change and the Role of Education. Taking place at BGU on the 12th and 13th of April the symposium is setting out to explore how society can adapt the far reaching effects of climate change to overcome the challenges it poses along with the crucial role Education plays in engaging and empowering people to act to alleviate the impacts of the climate change. Speakers over the two days include Virginia Murray (Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction, Public Health England), Nathalie Fomproix (International Union of Biological Sciences) and BGU’s own Dr Sarah Hemstock along with over 90 other additional contributors. The symposium has been organised by BGU in partnership with the International Climate Change Information Programme (ICCIP), Hamburg University of Applied Scientists and the Baltic University Programme. Doctoral Student presents special education research at international conference
Sue Wood, EdD Doctoral Student at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), presented her research manuscript ‘Assessment in Special Education: Improving Professionals’ Skills Using Video Footage’ at the 5th International “New Directions in Multidisciplinary Research & Practice” (NDMRP) Conference. The NDMRP invites scholars, scientists, engineers, researchers, practitioners and students to come together and share the new innovative trends in their respective field. This common platform is expected to provide the bases for joint venture among different fields to serve society in a better way. Sue’s research explored the value of video analysis and observation assessment in order to record the communication skills of non-verbal children with severe physical disabilities. Discussion focused on intervention strategies to improve communication and social skills of children with severe disabilities. Sue was joined at the conference by her co-author and research supervisor Dr. Maria Efstratopoulou, Senior Lecturer in SEND at BGU, who praised her professional performance in what was her first international conference presentation: “It was a unique experience for Sue to present a part of her research in front of a multicultural audience and it has been a great pleasure to have positive feedback from participants concerning Sue's research - which I supervise as part of her Doctoral studies at BGU.” “I strongly believe that we – as academics – need to motivate and support our students to actively participate in International Conferences in order to share their research findings and knowledge and exchange ideas with Colleagues and Academics from other Universities.' Expert shares insights on equality in education at BGU
The lecture will take place on Monday 6th February as part of BGU’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Week. Titled ‘Learning lessons from Section 28: Why no one should have to pretend at school’, the talk aims to equip some of Lincolnshire’s trainee teachers with skills and knowledge to support diverse classrooms. Professor Lee - who teaches at Anglia Ruskin University - was awarded an MBE for services to equality in education in King Charles’ first New Year Honours List. Her new book ‘Pretended: Schools and Section 28’ was released in February 2023 and recounts her experience as an educator under the legislation. She also recently acted as a consultant on BAFTA-nominated movie Blue Jean, with the plot focused on a teacher’s inability to be her authentic self at work. Her talk to the university will provide valuable insights into issues of equality in education in the UK. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the history of LGBT+ rights, as well as engage in a thought-provoking discussion about contemporary struggles for equality in classrooms. Professor Lee said: “I’m really excited to talk to trainee teachers at BGU, especially during LGBT History Month. Section 28 prevented me being an authentic role model to young people when I was a teacher and so I’m delighted to be able to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ inclusion in my work with the next generation of teachers. “Young people in our schools deserve to be supported by teachers who put equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of their work, and so it’s fantastic that BGU a have put together such a comprehensive and exciting programme for their trainee teachers.” Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion week at Bishop Grosseteste University is an annual event aimed at raising awareness and promoting understanding of the importance of equal rights and opportunities in education. Trainee teachers will attend various lectures, seminars, and reflective workshops to enhance their knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusive teaching practices, to meet the needs of all pupils. Bishop Grosseteste University Senior Lecturer and EDI Week Lead Dr Lyndsay Muir said: “It's a privilege to have Catherine inspire our trainees to develop their understanding of inclusive and adaptive teaching to meet the needs of all their current and future pupils. “We know from our research that this week enables a significant improvement in our trainees' confidence in tailoring teaching to remove barriers so that all pupils can reach their full potential.” -
Sandford Awards recognise 43 educational heritage sites
43 heritage sites have been recognised for their outstanding educational provision at this year's Sandford Awards. The presentation ceremony took place on Monday 6th November at Hampton Court Palace, one of this year’s recipients. Among the winners were the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, Ulster Folk Museum, Newcastle University Library, International Bomber Command Centre, and National Civil War Centre in Newark. A full list of awardees can be found here. The awards were presented by Dr Tracy Borman, Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University and Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust. Dr Tracy Borman said: "It is a huge pleasure and privilege to be presenting this year's Sandford Awards. Yet again, the winners represent a diverse range of historic sites across the British Isles and some really innovative learning programmes. "It is an extra treat to be staging our first in-person ceremony since the pandemic and in such magnificent surroundings as Hampton Court Palace." The Sandford Awards focus on formal, curriculum-aligned, heritage learning programmes that take place in the historic setting or natural environment and use the history and collections or natural resources to engage, inform and inspire visitors. Recognition is also given to informal learning such as family programmes and self-guided provision. Over 500 heritage sites and services across the British Isles have received the Sandford Award since the first awards were made in 1978. Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) manages the Sandford Award in partnership with Heritage Education Trust. BGU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Fleming said: "We at BGU are delighted to continue our support for the Sandford Award and heritage education across Britain.
