BGU School Administrator to Represent GB at Obstacle Course Racing World Championship 2019
Catherine Fahey, School Administrator at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), will represent Great Britain in the upcoming Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) World Championships 2019, held in the UK this October. The OCR World Championships are the only independent global championships for the sport of Obstacle Course Racing designed to unify, promote, and increase participation in the sport of OCR. Catherine qualified for her place with an impressive second place in her age category in the Spartan Sprint race. To prepare for the Championships Catherine is engaged in a rigorous training regime including three sessions a week with Summit Outdoor Fitness, along with strength training in the Gym and additional running sessions. As she prepares, Catherine expressed her excitement at being chosen for the event: “Competing in OCR has been an incredible experience and I truly believe if I can do it anyone can. Working at BGU has given me the flexibility to be able to run before and after work and during my lunch break and I would like to thank the team in the BGU Sports and Fitness Centre who let me use their facilities. I am a big believer in Positive Mental Attitude, Outdoor living and looking after the environment. Guidance for ECTs (Early Career Teachers) - Beyond ITE (BITE)
We recognise that your early career induction matters – as your professional development continues during this two- year period. This section of BGU’s website has been designed to support early career teachers. It offers guidance, together with useful links to sites and documents. Below are key sections to support your development as a teacher covering: Early Career Teacher Advice and SupportUseful Resources and WebsitesNational Teaching PrioritiesContinued Professional Development and Further Study As stressed in BGU teaching sessions, we are not qualified to support you with legal matters and would strongly advise that you join a Teachers’ Union. BGU is committed to supporting you as you transition to the school workplace; we want to continue to work with you during these formative years. Your school mentor and tutor will provide guidance and support, including coaching and mentoring, for your professional development. However, remember that as early career teachers, BGU is still here to support you with aspects of your teaching activity. For example, advice on behaviour management or subject knowledge and pedagogy. The recently developed Early Career Framework offers a structured programme of development, support, and professional dialogue. This programme provides a set of materials which cover the five core areas of the ECF. These are Behaviour Management, Pedagogy, Curriculum, Assessment and Professional Behaviours. Applying for paid employment
You may wish to supplement your income whilst you are studying with part-time paid employment, should your visa permit you to work. Before you start looking for work, you need to have for a National Insurance (NI) number from the UK Government. -
BGU inaugural Health and Social Care Fair Success
BGU recently hosted the inaugural Health and Social Care Careers Fair. Health and Social Care students, staff and the team at BG Futures worked together to organise and run the event. Students from across all H&SC programmes were invited to attend and learn more about the possible next steps in their careers in Health and Social Care. A variety of health and social care organisations from across Lincolnshire attended the event, including: NHS Neighbourhood Working Team, Market Rasen General Practice, Lincolnshire County Council Adult and Children’s services, With You, One You Lincolnshire and KIDS Lincolnshire. The event provided an opportunity for students to network with sector providers; with a focus on individual experiences of working in the sector and an interactive seminar exploring “A day in the life…..”. Further opportunities during the event included: a marketplace and discussions around both current vacancies and career development opportunities. Feedback from students reported an overwhelming success and more of the same: “My experience was really enjoyable; everyone was very chatty and helpful” “Really good: I thought it was brilliant being able to sit down and chat, in more depth about services” “Made me really think about where my BSc (Hons) will take me in the future”. Service providers reported that the students were “so enthusiastic and interested in what we do”, where they might fit within service and future career opportunities. Following the day's success, organisers hope to run the event again next year with a view to expanding and inviting even more service providers. -
Guernsey placement success for pGDE trainees
Bishop Grosseteste University students on pGDE courses (Professional Graduate Diploma in Education) in Sport, Performing Arts, Plumbing, Health and Social Care, Childcare, English and Engineering undertook a placement for a week at the Guernsey College of Further Education. All trainees on the programme have one main placement and the Guernsey visit was to enable them to see another setting beyond their own and also to show them different education system to BGU's. Guernsey was an experience that we would not of missed - it gave us an insight into the lifestyle of another teaching environment. We were made very welcome and as such were able to enjoy the culture and social experience. As a group it gave us the opportunity to bond and engage with fellow teacher trainers. Roger, pGDE student Guernsey College staff will be coming to the UK in the future for a reciprocal visit, where staff have arranged for them to spend some time in Further Education colleges where our trainees are based and a day at BGU. Input was provided to the colleges Continuing Professional Development (CPD) during the time trainees were with them on placement. This gave Guernsey an opportunity to develop relationships with trainees to fill any potential vacancies they have. This opportunity has allowed me to develop my skills as a facilitator. Working with the performing arts department in an environment that's so different from my current placement gave me great inspiration for carrying on my teaching practice. Diverse Academies Trust - BGU partnership
The Diverse Association for Professional Learning is part of Diverse Academies Trust and is working in partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) to deliver their ITE programme. They offer places for Primary, Secondary and special education in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and their well-established programme of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) provides trainees the opportunity to gain a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status - as well as masters credits in Primary, Secondary and special teaching. The Diverse Association for Professional Learning provide a comprehensive support and guidance package along with tailored training to prepare individuals for their career. They have the flexibility to choose the school where they train and opportunity to select the school where they undergo their training, which is a unique feature of the programme.
