Dr Ashley Compton
Dr Ashley Compton joined BGU in 2000 and has taught on a variety of programmes across the institution. Her main teaching areas are research, mathematics, music and PE. Her master’s degree focused on children’s musical listening preferences, while her doctorate studied the relationships between creativity and assessment on undergraduate teacher education. She is also interested in gymnastics and volunteers as a coach for a local gymnastics club. Before coming to BGU Ashley was a primary teacher, and also worked as an advisory teacher for mathematics for Lincolnshire County Council, spreading the joys of numeracy throughout Lincolnshire. Teaching Ashley teaches mostly on the BA (Hons) Primary Education course but also contributes to the primary PGCE and supervises PhD and EdD students. She has created bespoke inset for teachers on mathematics, music, creativity and research, in the UK, Bermuda and at an EU summer school in Crete. Ashley is an accredited Professional Development Lead for mathematics and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy -
Dr Clare Lawrence
Clare is Associate Professor of Participatory Autism Research, as well as the English subject lead on the secondary PGCE course. She is a graduate of York, Oxford, Northumbria, Birmingham, and Sheffield Hallam universities. Her PhD is in parental involvement in the education of children with autism. Clare is the East Midlands Convenor for the Participatory Autism Research Collective (PARC) as well as being Lincolnshire County Council Autism Champion for BGU. -
Dr Hazel C Kent
hazel.kent@bishopg.ac.uk Hazel Kent is a historian with research interests in Modern British history, focusing particularly on left wing political culture, conscientious objection and pacifism. Hazel has worked at Bishop Grosseteste University since 2007, where she is now an Associate Tutor in History. Prior to this Hazel taught undergraduate History students at the University of Sheffield, where she undertook her MA and PhD. She is also a qualified secondary school History teacher and spent eight years as a Head of Department. Teaching Hazel teaches on a range of undergraduate modules: Introduction to History; Twentieth Century British History; People and Places in the past: Histories of Individuals, Families and Communities; and The Cold War and the Space Age. She also supervises third year independent studies and dissertations, and teaches an MA module on Biography as Historical Practice. Hazel holds a PGCE from the University of Leicester and has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2012. She is BGU’s steering group representative for the East Midlands Centre for History Teaching and Learning. -
Dr Laura Way
Dr Laura Way is currently a lecturer in sociology and a fellow of the HEA. Laura gained a MA in women's studies from the University of York before completing a PGCE and MA in Education with Nottingham Trent University. Her PhD in sociology with the University of Leicester focused on ageing punk women and the construction of identity. Prior to joining BGU, Laura worked within the further education sector. Her research interests include age, gender and subcultural participation; creative research methods; and punk pedagogies. Laura is a steering group member of the Punk Scholars Network and Editorial Board member for the Intellect journal 'Punk & Post-Punk'. -
Dr Nick Gee
Dr Nick Gee is the Dean of Faculty at Bishop Grosseteste University, with responsibility for academic delivery of the University strategy. He was originally appointed to BGU in 2015, as Head of School, becoming the inaugural Dean of Faculty in September 2019. Prior to joining the University, he held the posts of Associate Dean in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, at the University of East Anglia. Nick read Geography at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, and completed a doctorate at the University of East Anglia with a thesis investigating perceptions of evolving community sentiments for participants undertaking residential fieldwork, adopting an ethnographic methodology. His current research interests include outdoor education, subject knowledge, notions of community and progression into higher education, and he also has expertise in geographical fieldwork. Nick has authored over 70 scholarly/academic journal articles, contributed to Chapters in academic and professional texts, and acted as a consultant for GCSE, A level, undergraduate and postgraduate textbooks. He has undertaken funded research for the East of England Development Education Network and the College of West Anglia, and currently leads a British Council-funded (2019-21) international student mobility project. In 2018 Nick was invited by the British Embassy Bangkok, The Department for International Trade and the Teachers’ Council of Thailand to deliver specialist input on the importance of subject knowledge, to inform the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Framework. He holds a Visiting Professorship at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University and has undertaken a variety of partnership, knowledge exchange and recruitment activities in China, Cyprus, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Thailand. -
Dr Elizabeth Farrar
Elizabeth joined BGU in September 2015 having been a Headteacher for six years. She was involved in collaborative working with other primary schools across North Lincolnshire, including carrying out Teaching and Learning Reviews. Throughout her headship, Elizabeth’s school hosted ITT students from various universities, and she was the lead School Based Mentor for BGU placements. She has taught across the Primary age range, specialising in 7 – 11 years, and has been subject leader in English, ICT, Geography and PSHE. Before moving into primary education, Elizabeth taught English in the secondary phase, up to and including A level. -
Dr Emma Rogers
Emma joined BGU in August 2017 after 6 years as a self-employed school advisor providing in-class coaching and training to local authorities and schools. She has experience in Primary English, assessment and learning. She worked for several years for the Primary National Strategies leading the successful Every Child a Writer programme and has developed languages curricula and assessment guidance in over 150 countries. In 2018 Emma became a Fellow of the Higher Education Association. Emma leads an OU/UKLA Teachers’ Reading group to develop Reading for Pleasure Pedagogies with teachers and students. Teaching Emma will be contributing to a range of programmes within Teacher Development including undergraduate and PGCE course. Emma is English lead for the School of Teacher Development. -
Hannah Wells
Hannah joined BGU in September 2018. Prior to this, Hannah taught for eleven years across key stages in both primary and junior schools in Lincolnshire, leading subjects including Humanities, Art, DT and English. She spent the last three years working as a Deputy Head across a Multi-Academy Trust and a year as an Interim Head of School. Hannah successfully established School Direct Teacher Training across the Trust she worked for, in partnership with BGU. As well as establishing School Direct Teacher Training, Hannah was also responsible for induction, NQT and RQT support. She created a bespoke programme of support linked to career entry targets and the Teacher Standards’ document for the NQT year. As part of her Master's Degree, Hannah’s research culminated in the creation of a mentor standards document that was used as part of teacher performance management across the Trust. Teaching Hannah is the Programme Leader for PGCE Primary and EYs. Hannah primarily teaches and contributes to the PGCE programme as well as contributing to the Undergraduate and School Direct programmes. -
Dr Helen Bushell-Thornalley
Helen has oversight of Secondary PGCE for Physical Education and Dance, leadership in secondary mentor training and Educational Ethnography research in the Education Master's programme team. Helen had an International career of fourteen years, playing Hockey for England and Great Britain and coaching professionally within this sport. During the 2018 Helen was part of the former Women’s International group during the Hockey World Cup. Helen’s first degree is in Sports Science and her subsequent qualification as a secondary Physical Education teacher at Brunel University. Throughout her school career, she was Head of Department of Physical Education department and then as Head of Sixth Form in an outstanding school of over 1200 pupils in London. Helen then moved from her role in leadership to work with undergraduate, PGCE, GT, OTT and Master's in Education degree students at St Mary’s University. Helen took on a leading role within mentoring and coaching Secondary Physical Education Specials at St Mary’s University for four-years QTS degrees and PGCE programmes. During ten years at that institution, Helen held leadership roles in Education at Academic, and Programme Director levels and course leads and completed her Master’s degree from Surrey University. This research developed an institutional Academic Tutoring System ATS, focusing on tutor support for degree classifications and target setting for undergraduate QTS students through Action Research. In 2012 Helen embarked on her Doctorate in Education at Bishop Grosseteste University. The focus of Helen’s research is in Physical Education and School Sport and how the Olympic movement has politically influenced practices in the UK, from its origin in Victorian Britain and then during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. -
Janet Atkinson
Janet joined BGU in September 2016 from Bath Spa University where she was a Senior Lecturer. She worked with the PGCE students in Maths and Professional Studies alongside being an Academic Tutor for a group of teacher trainees. Her introduction to Higher Education was as an Associate Lecturer at the University of the West England teaching on both their undergraduate ITT and PGCE courses. She worked within the primary and early years teams supporting the 3rd Year students and PE Subject Specialists. Janet had previously been a Primary School Teacher in Lancashire for over 15 years, teaching across the Primary age range. She held a number of leadership and subject responsibilities, including supporting colleagues in both primary and secondary school settings. Teaching Janet teaches on the BA (Hons) Primary Education Course and contributes to the Primary PGCE and PTS programmes. Her teaching interests include Maths, PE and computing.
