Experiences of Lincolnshire Female Third Sector Leaders to be Explored in Scoping Event
Staff from the Psychology department at Bishop Grosseteste University are working in partnership with Involving Lincs and the Community Fund to facilitate a scoping event relating to resilience in leadership, specifically focusing on women in the Third Sector in Lincolnshire. They would like to hear from sector leaders to establish opportunities, aspirations, successes, barriers and needs. This feedback will then help them inform potential collaborative networking, project work and research. The initial meeting will take place at BGU on Tuesday 25th June from 10am until 12pm. This is a fantastic opportunity to not only share your experiences with like-minded peers, but also to have a hand in shaping relationships across the county. In addition to sector leaders there are also opportunities for students to be involved both in the running of the day and with follow up work in project and research development. Academics Explore Research Partnerships with International Visitors
Academics from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) welcomed Kerem and Meral Coşkun from Artvin Çoruh University in Turkey to explore and discuss potential collaborative research opportunities. Their planned research is based on the social, emotional and moral development of young children and has developed from a collaborative article ‘Is it possible to teach values without social psychology?’ (International Journal of Progressive Education, 14 (6). pp. 38-50. ISSN 1554-5210) written by BGU’s Dr Pat Beckley and academics from Artvin Çoruh. Dr Beckley discussed the new research and how it would build on the existing work carried out by the collaborative group: “The research builds on previous comparative studies the group have undertaken and focuses on differences and similarities between perceptions of social, emotional and moral development in selected primary school sites in England and Turkey. It is proposed to broaden those participating in the studies in both countries. It is an exciting opportunity for BGU as it creates a dynamic collaboration between two similar sized universities which have teacher training as a fundamental element of their work.” If you’re interested in a future in Early Years provision or Teaching there are few institutions that can provide a better experience than BGU. BGU PhD student presents at International Conference on Dream Research
Anthony Bloxham, Psychology PhD student at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), presented his research at the 36th International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) Conference held in Kerkrade, The Netherlands. Anthony’s research, part-funded by the IASD's Dream Science Foundation, describes a psychological experiment conducted in collaboration with The University of Lincoln, which aims to understand the nature of dreaming and its links with memory processes. The presentation was delivered as part of a research symposium at the conference, on the subject of memory reactivations in sleep and the developing use of virtual reality (VR) in dreams research. A number of renowned dream researchers from all over the world were in attendance and listened to the presentation. Other speakers at this symposium included Jayne Gackenbach (USA), an expert on how video games influence dreams, and Claudia Picard-Deland (Canada), PhD student at the University of Montreal, who independently conducted a very similar experiment to Anthony's. The talks were well-received and generated insightful discussion among those who were present. Reflecting on his experience after the conference, the opportunity to share and discuss his work with international peers was one of Anthony’s key highlights from the event: "I really enjoyed visiting the conference in The Netherlands and presenting my work, as well as getting to meet many of the researchers whose work has inspired and informed my own. My greatest thanks to them. Kate Adams who used to be at BGU was there, and it was nice to see her again." Successful Scoping Event Creates New Opportunities for Women in Third Sector Leadership
Earlier this year staff from the Psychology department at Bishop Grosseteste University, working in partnership with Involving Lincs and the Community Fund, facilitated a scoping event relating to resilience in leadership, specifically focusing on women in the Third Sector in Lincolnshire. The event heard from sector leaders to establish opportunities, aspirations, successes, barriers and needs and was well received by those in attendance who praised its "Great communication, fantastic insight into the working reality of women in leadership" In response to the feedback from the scoping meeting, efforts are now underway to run a second opportunity for Women In Third Sector Leadership on Thursday the 19th of September. Thomasin Nicholds, Lecturer in Psychology at BGU and one of the event organisers, explained what participants could expect from it: "The second event has been designed by some of the participants of the last session, to develop peer support opportunities and a greater understanding of mentoring. Individuals will be exploring the benefits of developing these professional relationships in order to enable their own wellbeing at work and that of their colleagues. The theme running through the event will be how we ensure a resilient leadership in the third sector, with further exploration as to what this means specifically for women leaders. A working group of leaders has designed the session and are keen to consider the Leadership needs across the third sector, via new and existing resource, all facilitated by partnership working." Putting Smiles at the Heart of Teaching: Children's (Un) Happiness explored in Senior Lecturer's new book
If you ask parents what they most want for their child, many will say something like this: ‘I just want my child to be happy’. Whilst most understand that they cannot ensure their children are permanently happy, they are often unprepared for seeing their children frequently or deeply sad. ‘Why are our children so unhappy?’ is a question that baffles parents worldwide but a new book edited by Dr Maria Efstratopoulou aims to provide an understanding of the factors that influence children’s emotions which it believes is essential for anyone interacting with young children. Differing from most books in the field, which focus on offering advice to professionals on how to manage children’s behaviour, Bring My Smile Back: Working with Unhappy Children in Education aims to explore the crucial link between emotions, well-being and learning and the wider social factors affecting children’s happiness. The authors, including several of Dr Efstratopoulou’s colleagues at BGU, draw from a range of experience, examples, case studies and educational approaches to engage with children’s’ wellbeing and emotions. With chapters covering areas such as ‘Can we define happiness?’, supporting children with communication problems and the ‘(Un)Happiness of Black and Ethnic Minority Children’ Bring My Smile Back focuses on children’s happiness rather than their academic achievements and positive behaviour, in essence putting children’s Smiles at the heart of teaching. Writing in the book’s forward Professor Scott Fleming, Deputy Vice-Chancellor in BGU, praised the publication’s accessible exploration as a “landmark contribution” to education: “Children’s wellbeing and happiness have become matters of global concern. This important and exciting collection brings together the work of an impressive team of International Social science scholars and practitioners to address these challenges. Its timing could hardly be better. The chapters have a very accessible structure and format, they are conceptually sophisticated and have an explicit applied professional practitioner emphasis. They should be read by students, researchers, policy-makers and those responsible for service delivery. If they are Bring my smile back: Working with unhappy children in education is likely to become a landmark contribution. I am delighted to endorse a book that features my colleagues from Bishop Grosseteste University. Dark Triad, Virtual Reality and Sporting Choice to be Explored by BGU Students at International Conference
From today staff and students from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) will be joining academic colleagues from around the world in presenting at the 2020 Affect, Personality and Embodied Brain (APE) research network online conference. APE2020 is the first conference held by the Affect, Personality and Embodied Brain Network which is a group of international researchers whose work examines the biological underpinnings of cognitive and affective traits and how they manifest in personality and behaviour. The three-day conference will be held virtually and will feature presenters from as far as Brazil and New Zealand on a diverse range of topics such as Adverse Childhood Experiences and psychopathology, Music Mind and Wellbeing, and Diet and Depression. In addition, there will also be the following presentation by BGU students: How Secondary Psychopathy Mediates the Relationship between Sporting Choice and Aggression and its sub facets: Scott Kidd and Olivia BirkinDo Dark Triad traits function as defence mechanisms in reducing death anxiety?: Emily LaytonAn exploration study into the link between Psychopathy and Memory of a Virtual Reality Game in Undergraduate Students: Leah Kerr Dr Alyson Blanchard, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at BGU, will be joining the students for their presentations and spoke of her pride at their achievements: “I am extremely proud of Leah, Emily, Scott and Olivia to have reached this level of achievement during their undergraduate careers. Their projects were innovative and inspired, and the work produced to a very high standard. They should also be recognised for having the motivation and commitment to having submitted an abstract for consideration by the conference committee. This will be an exciting and rewarding experience for them, not only in terms of presenting, but also in meeting and being part of a community of international researchers within a conference setting where they'll learn about the most up to date research in the field.” The conference, which runs from today until the 25th, is still open for registration and, as a virtual event is accessible to all at a nominal fee of only €10 – the Key Note speeches can be viewed for free. Enabling Gender Equality in Leadership: an exploration of leadership and self-awareness at Bishop Grosseteste University
Thomasin Nicholds, Lecturer in Psychology at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), has been successful in leading a cross University application to the Church University Fund, which will provide funding for a two year project to develop further understanding of leadership and gender. Through this research project the University will be better placed to promote inclusion, enable shared learning and knowledge transfer. Thomasin’s successful bid utilizes a cross-university approach to develop dialogue, and develop an understanding of the experiences of leaders in our campus community. Speaking after the successful application Thomasin discussed some of the project's aims: "The project will provide a programme of activities to raise awareness, share learning and promote progress, using Community Participatory Action Research. The University Chaplaincy is central to Bishop Grosseteste University’s ethos and identity and the project presents an opportunity to place our Church University status at the heart of our development, by working with the wider University community in our understanding of diversity and leadership" The research team lead by Thomasin Nicholds comprises Dr Sue Becker, Dr Jonathan Wainwright and a new student researcher role (applications for which can be made here). A Steering Group is being established and will have representation from within the University and externally. The funder has encouraged that the project is shared nationally across the Cathedral Universities group and wider Higher Education and non-academic contexts.
