Carers’ Conference 2022
Earlier this month, we were delighted to host the 'Engaging, identifying and supporting carers within education and employment learning' Conference. This was a joint collaboration between BGU's Health and Social Care Community and Every-One, with an aim to raise the profile of unpaid carers. “An unpaid carer is described as someone who looks after a relative or friend who due to ill health, physical or mental illness, disability, frailty or addiction cannot manage without support” - Lincolnshire County Council A variety of guest speakers spoke throughout the day, along with BGU staff and students, all of whom shared their experience of being a carer. Over 80 delegates participated from a number of different healthcare providers in Lincolnshire. Representatives from Lincolnshire Coop, Lincolnshire County Council, Every-One, Carers First, Kisimul School, Lincolnshire Partnership Foundation Trust and North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, were all in attendance, alongside our Health and Social care students. The students played a vital role at the conference, in terms of co-hosting and facilitating workshops. Speaking about the conference, The Rev’d Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice-Chancellor of BGU, said: “As an institution we take carers very seriously and have obtained the Carers’ Award on repeated occasions which is in recognition of both the work with our students and staff who have caring responsibilities. It was good to have BGU being described as a centre of excellence for this particular group, and it was pleasing to hear so many positive comments from delegates and organisers about our students’ engagement with this as they will be the professionals with a role in taking the agenda forward as future innovators” Thank you to everyone who participated and attended in the conference. Bishop Grosseteste University and the Heritage Education Trust to host Sandford Awards 2022
The Sandford Award recognises the enormous range of learning that happens outside of the classroom, and the memorable, often life-changing experiences that the participating visitors enjoy. The Award is administered by Bishop Grosseteste University, in partnership with the Heritage Education Trust. The Trust is the only body in existence to provide independent, quality assurance for sites that offer formal learning programmes, with recognition also given to family programmes and other informal learning. The Award scheme was conceived in 1975 as a result of the European Year of Architecture. Founder members were Lord Montagu (English Heritage), Lord Sandford (representing the Department of the Environment) and Commander Michael Saunders Watson (Historic Houses Association). Their purpose was to raise the profile of the educational value of historic properties. Since the first awards were made in 1978, over 500 heritage sites and services have received a Sandford Award. Professor Scott Fleming, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Bishop Grosseteste University commented: "At Bishop Grosseteste University we are delighted to be able to continue our support for the Heritage Education Trust. Many of our programmes in the humanities, social sciences and teacher education are linked directly to this important element of the visitor economy. The Sanford Awards recognise immense hard work and sector-leading excellence. We are especially grateful to the team of colleagues who make it all possible." This year we will be joined by broadcaster, author, cultural campaigner and Chair of the Royal Parks, Loyd Grossman, CBE, who is the guest speaker at the ceremony. Michael Maddison, Chair of the Heritage Education Trust, stated: “This year’s winners of the prestigious Sandford Award have demonstrated yet again the determination of heritage sites to provide the highest quality of learning for all who visit and especially for young people. The focus on ensuring that everyone can access the treasures existing at each site helps us all to appreciate that heritage matters and that the sector serves to enrich the lives of all who visit”. Campus cat raises money for local charity
A local university campus cat has raised £525 for a much-loved local charity, by launching his own calendar. Johnty, Bishop Grosseteste University’s famous mascot, posed up a storm for his 2023 calendar. The feline philanthropist is a familiar furry face to students, staff, and campus visitors and boasts a significant online following via his Facebook page. His main role on campus is providing a calming influence to support students in their studies. On sale since October, the calendar includes twelve photos of the mascot-turned-model and has proven popular with the BGU community. Johnty's adopted owner, Vice-Chancellor of BGU, Professor Peter Neil said: “The staff in IT who enjoy his company in the office were very keen to do something for charity and, together with our reprographics department, have designed a unique calendar which shows Johnty off at his mischievous best. “I am delighted this money has been raised by staff and students for this important local feline charity.” The cheque for more than £525 was presented to Lincoln Cat Care Trustee Liz Thomson by Vice-Chancellor Peter Neil and Ian Ferguson from IT at BGU, Johnty’s personal photographer for the calendar. Established in 2004 by a group of cat lovers, Lincoln Cat Care relies on donations to rehome strays, cover vet bills, and provide emergency care to felines in need. Liz said: “We currently have around 100 cats and caring for them can be expensive, so this donation is so appreciated. “Thank you to everyone who bought Johnty’s calendar. Your donation will help a lot of cats.” There are still calendars available for purchase. Please contact johntyuniversitycat@gmail.com to order yours for £3.50. Societies receive Survey Week prize
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) recently completed its annual Survey Week, encouraging students to participate in two surveys aimed at measuring student satisfaction with all aspects of life at the university. The surveys included the BGUSS, the university's own Student Satisfaction Survey, and the National Student Survey (NSS), which is independently run and asks final year undergraduate students across the country about their time at university. To incentivise student participation in the surveys, the university offered £100 to the student group with the best turnout. This year, the award was split between two clubs. The Dr Who Club and the Men's Football Club were the two societies that had the best turnout at Survey Week, and they were recognised for their participation, with each receiving £50 to support their group. Men’s Football Club President Jon Smith said: "We’re really pleased to have been awarded the £50 for our participation in the student surveys. It was quick and easy to take part, and now we’ve got some extra funds to purchase equipment and kit for the lads." The society's Vice President Lewis Underhill added: "As a student society, we recognise the importance of giving feedback. We're looking forward to seeing the positive changes as a result of the surveys." Pro-Vice Chancellor Rob Boast presented the groups with the award and reiterated the value of students sharing their opinions. He said: "It's great to see so many students getting involved in Survey Week. These surveys are important because they help us to identify areas where we can improve and ensure that we continue to provide an excellent student experience. "Congratulations to the Dr Who Club and the Men's Football Club for their outstanding participation and thank you all the students who took part in the surveys." -
BGU Vice-Chancellor announces retirement
The Vice-Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), the Rev’d Canon Professor Peter Neil, has announced he will retire at the end of July 2023. He is the second vice-chancellor of the institution since it gained university title in 2012 and amongst the longest serving VCs in the UK. During his ten-year leadership, BGU has transformed from its former status as a university college with a strong tradition in teacher education to become a higher education provider that is shaped by a flourishing suite of research and knowledge exchange activities and an enhanced campus estate. Since 2013, the portfolio of taught provision has expanded to include professional studies, social sciences, and the humanities. The volume, scope, and quality of research at BGU has improved significantly with a four-fold increase in the number of researchers returned to the Research Excellence Framework between 2014 and 2021. Knowledge exchange has also gathered momentum during this time, especially through projects in partnership with the public sector. Throughout BGU has remained steadfastly committed to its person-centred approach and focus on the students’ experiences. Professor Neil said: “It has been an immense privilege working for Bishop Grosseteste University as one of the key education providers in the city. It is a very special place and its values and ethos remain as strong today as they did when the then College was opened in 1862. "I am extremely proud of what we continue to do for students and of the contribution that BGU and our community make to the life of the city, county and beyond.” The Chair of University Council Anne Frost said: “Professor Neil has been one of the longest serving Vice Chancellors of this very special education institution. The Council would like to thank him for everything he has done for the university in that time and wish him well for his retirement. We will now begin the recruitment process to find his successor.” Professor Neil - who is also a Canon of Lincoln Cathedral - will leave post at the end of July. -
Bishop Grosseteste University shortlisted in three categories for Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2023
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is delighted to announce the University has been shortlisted for the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2023 in three different categories. These include student support, halls and accommodation, and career prospects. The Whatuni Student Choice Awards is an annual event that recognises and celebrates excellence in higher education. The awards are based on feedback from thousands of students across the United Kingdom, who rate their universities on various aspects such as quality of teaching, campus facilities, student support, and accommodation. Collected on campuses across the country and on the Whatuni website, these reviews bring valuable insight into the institutions and make the WUSCAs the largest exclusively student-voted awards in the UK. The university has been shortlisted in the student support category, which recognises institutions that go above and beyond to support their students during their time at university. The halls and accommodation category acknowledges universities that provide high-quality accommodation options for their students. Finally, BGU has also been shortlisted in the career prospects category, which recognises universities that help their graduates to secure employment after graduation. Bishop Grosseteste University Pro Vice-Chancellor Rob Boast said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for three categories at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2023. As an institution that puts students at the heart of everything we do, it is incredibly rewarding to be recognised for our commitment to providing an exceptional standard of student support, accommodation, and delivering excellent career prospects. “These nominations are a testament to the collaborative hard work of all our staff and we take great pride in knowing that our students have a positive and fulfilling experience at Bishop Grosseteste University.” The winners of the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2023 will be announced at a ceremony in London in April 2023. BGU will be hoping to add to its previous success in the awards, having placed second for Student Support in 2022. -
Students Vote BGU Most Supportive University In The UK
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is a double award winner at the prestigious Whatuni Student Choice Awards, having beaten all other UK universities to take the top prize in the Student Support and Halls & Student Accommodation categories. The prestigious Whatuni Student Choice Awards are nominated and judged by students from across the UK. Comedian and actor Ellie Taylor hosted this year's awards ceremony, where BGU scooped two of the twelve prizes on offer, and finished third in a further category - Career Prospects. The Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University, said: "I am thrilled and immensely proud that BGU has been awarded not one, but two prestigious awards at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards. Honorary Award recipients announced
Each year, Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has the opportunity to award Honorary Doctorates and Honorary Fellowships at its graduation ceremonies. BGU staff and students, retired staff and alumni and current or former University Council members were invited to nominate candidates for honorary awards. Honorary Fellowship is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the University; whilst Honorary Doctorate is awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to academic achievement, social, economic or cultural life. We're pleased to announce this year's award recipients, who will be honoured at graduation celebrations in July 2023. BGU announces honorary award recipients for 2023
Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has announced the recipients of its Honorary Awards, which will be presented at upcoming graduation ceremonies in late July 2023. Five awardees are set to receive Honorary Doctorates for their outstanding contributions to academic achievement, social, economic or cultural life. Two Distinguished Honorary Fellowships will be awarded to individuals for exceptional contributions to the University and public life locally or regionally. Among the Honorary Doctorate awardees are husband and wife, Claire and James Birch, whose fundraising efforts have supported several local projects, including the reinvigoration of Doddington Hall. Charles Cormack, another recipient of an Honorary Doctorate, is recognised as a leader in international higher education. As the founder of the Ukraine Twinning initiative, his work paired UK and other international universities with Ukrainian universities to provide support and resources. Dame Judith Mayhew-Jonas DBE will also receive an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her exceptional contributions over the course of her career, including as Dame Commander of the British Empire, Chairman of the Royal Opera House, Commissioner of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Chancellor of BGU. Another recipient of the Honorary Doctorate is best-selling female historian Alison Weir acclaimed for her extensive body of work, including 21 history books and 14 historical novels, which have collectively sold three million copies worldwide. Receiving a Distinguished Honorary Fellowship is Hannah Spencer, Managing Director of LAGAT College and Trustee and Vice Chair of the Lincolnshire Employment Accommodation Project (LEAP), which aims to tackle the issue of homelessness. Her work has so far helped over 1,500 individuals and families find stable housing and employment. John O'Donoghue, a member of Lincoln BIG, will also receive a Distinguished Honorary Fellowship. His dedication to providing career opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Lincoln through his businesses has made a significant impact in the local area. He also acts as an external trustee for Bishop Grosseteste Students’ Union. Bishop Grosseteste University Vice-Chancellor, The Rev’d Canon Professor Peter Neil said: “We are proud to be awarding this year’s honorary recipients for their expertise and service in their respective roles. I am delighted to welcome them to our wider BGU community. “Each one of them is inspirational in their own right and all serve as excellent role models for our students in how to make a positive impact on society.” The awards will be presented during graduation celebrations at Lincoln’s Cathedral. BGU celebrates graduates at Lincoln Cathedral
Students, friends, family, and faculty gathered in Lincoln Cathedral to witness the graduation ceremonies of 667 students from Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU). Celebrations took place on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th July over four ceremonies. Graduates from different levels of academic disciplines including undergraduate, master's, postgraduate, and PhD programmes donned their robes to cross the stage at Lincoln Cathedral. The University also presented Honorary Awards to individuals recognised for their exceptional contributions to academia and society. Among the Honorary Doctorate awardees were the owners of Doddington Hall, husband and wife Claire and James Birch; best-selling historian Alison Weir; philanthropist and leader in higher education Charles Cormack; and BGU’s previous Chancellor Dame Judith Mayhew-Jonas DBE. Receiving a Distinguished Honorary Fellowship was Managing Director of LAGAT College and Trustee and Vice Chair of LEAP Hannah Spencer; and Lincoln BIG member John O’Donoghue. The event marked the last graduation presided over by The Rev’d Canon Professor Peter Neil, following his retirement announcement in March. Professor Neil said: “Graduation is the high point for all our final year students, and we are so fortunate in Lincoln for that celebration to take place in one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. “This is a truly special occasion and I know that our students and their friends and families will have had a memorable day in the city.”
