Take That! Chart Toppers to be Streamed Live in Lincoln
Take That, the UK's most successful live act ever, will play the O2 Arena later this month – and fans in Lincoln can see the event streamed live at The Venue at Bishop Grosseteste University. The concert on Friday 19th June is described as a colourful explosion featuring dancing jellyfish, beautifully choreographed puppetry, a flying tandem sidecar, a burning globe, pyrotechnics, fireworks and indoor rain. Take That got together in 1990 but a quarter of a century later they’re still packing in the crowds. This year’s European tour is their first since Progress in 2011. Lincolnshire’s own vocal star Ella Henderson is also appearing with the band on the current tour. Tickets for the screening at The Venue in Lincoln cost £20, or £12.50 each for group bookings of ten or more. Take That fans can also enjoy a pre-screening two-course dinner in Refectory, close to The Venue on the BGU campus, at £35 per head (or £27.50 for groups of ten or more). The Venue is a modern cinema on the university campus equipped with HD projection and the latest surround sound technology. Alongside its full programme of mainstream, independent and family film screenings, The Venue started screening live transmissions of plays from the National Theatre last year. This screening is in partnership with ScreenLive Entertainment, and the show will be scheduled live or near live in over 20 territories worldwide. To book tickets go to The Venue’s Take That web page or call the ticket hotline on 01522 583608. -

Take That BGU! Dan Makes a Welcome Return
A former Bishop Grosseteste University student is set to make a glorious return to the campus to perform as Take That star Gary Barlow. Dan Hadfield, who performs as the singer as well as acting as Gary’s official lookalike, is singing at BGU on Friday 6th November in The Venue from 7pm. Having performed with the man himself and appeared on the X Factor, Dan is known as the ‘number one Gary Barlow tribute artiste’ and performs his solo show across the country as well as abroad. He has also appeared on the BBC comedy Miranda. Dan said: “I know that it will be a pleasure to perform at BGU again. My mind goes back to performing in the university’s Stars In Their Eyes competition as David Gray with my friend Euan on guitar. We were the only entrants to perform live, and covered ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’, a nine-minute song which brought the house down enough for us to win the competition.” Dan also worked in higher education for a while at both BGU and the University of Lincoln, but left that behind to perform as Gary. He is currently writing his debut album of original music, set for release in 2016. Hannah Clipsham, Events Manager at BGU, said: “It’s great that we can welcome back a former student to the university to perform. To have one who’s done so well in his chosen career is pretty special. This should be a night to remember, and we can’t wait to hear all those Take That hits live!” Find out more about Dan at www.garybarlowlookalike.com Tickets for the evening cost £15, with all funds raised going to the BGU Foundation Fund, which helps enhance the student experience and supports making a difference to people’s lives. The university is also offering a pre-concert meal to book in advance in the Refectory from 5pm to 6.30pm. Enjoy Bhajis and Bhangra Beats at BGU Bollywood Evening
Tickets are still available to join in the one-night-only Bollywood bash at Bishop Grosseteste University. This year’s Bollywood-themed evening will take place on Sunday 13th September 2015 to raise money for the Bishop Grosseteste University Foundation Fund. For just £25 guests will be treated to a screening of Bollywood movie Queen, followed by an authentic Indian meal in the Refectory. The evening will begin at The Venue at BGU from 5pm, with the bar open from 4pm. Queen is a 2014 comedy-drama directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by Anurang Kashyap. The film tells the story of a young Delhi girl who decides to travel alone on her planned honeymoon after her fiancé ends their relationship. Hannah Clipsham, Events Manager for BGU, said: “Bollywood is one of the largest centres of film production in the world, so this is a real treat for everyone, whether you are already an avid fan of Indian film and culture or not. “This will be our fourth annual Bollywood evening, which has always been very popular in the past. And as if there were another excuse needed to get involved, we will direct all proceeds from the evening to the BGU Foundation Fund. “This event is co-organised with the dedicated support and generosity of Jasmit Phull, a member of the Bishop Grosseteste University Council, who works hard to make it a success.” The BGU Foundation Fund exists to encourage and enable students and alumni to take part in voluntary or community engagement activities, both here in the UK and overseas. The initiative supports charitable projects that clearly demonstrate enrichment to the students, but cannot be otherwise resourced through the university’s main funds. It also helps staff to develop innovative activities which enhance the student experience and supports the Students’ Union clubs and societies. Over the last year grants have been provided to support many diverse activities, including a visit by one student to Japan to take part in the world Scout Jamboree. Another is travelling to Bangalore, India as part of a visual arts project. Although it is not compulsory, guests are welcome to fully embrace the evening of Bollywood glamour and arrive in traditional Indian or international dress. New Lease of Life for Former Connie’s Restaurant at BGU
A former canteen and dining room at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln is being turned into much needed teaching accommodation as the institution gears up for an increase in students. BGU is spending £850,000 on converting the former Connie’s dining room and kitchen into an academic facility. The refurbishment project will create seven multi-functional, flexible teaching spaces on the ground floor of the building which will be ready for use in September 2015. The university’s strategic plan envisages a growth in student numbers and BGU is also broadening the range of courses it offers, introducing Business (Team Entrepreneurship), Health and Social Care, Sociology, Psychology, Counselling and History and Archaeology from September. Part of the new teaching facility will be used by staff and students on the university’s new Business (Team Entrepreneurship) degree course. “In the past Connie’s was the place where our students who lived on campus had their meals, but now we’ve moved to self-catering accommodation and opened the Refectory to cater for the changing demand,” said Fred Robson, Head of Estates at BGU. “We no longer need this catering space so we’re converting the building to give us additional teaching space as we grow our student numbers.” The work, which entails some minor demolition and re-roofing of the former kitchen, is being undertaken by the main contractor, Robert Woodhead Ltd from Mansfield. -

Annual Lecture Will Shed Light on Battle of Lincoln
Eight hundred years ago this week one of the most important battles of mediaeval times was fought in Lincoln. To mark the anniversary, author and historian Dr Sean McGlynn will give the Annual History Lecture at Bishop Grosseteste University tomorrow (Wednesday 17th May) and shed light on the dramatic events of the Battle of Lincoln in 1217. The battle fought on 20th May 1217 is deemed by historians to be one of the most important military engagements fought in medieval England. This lecture will explain the remarkable circumstances that led to the battle and offer a detailed description of the dramatic events that occurred on the day. Dr Sean McGlynn is the author of three critically acclaimed books on mediaeval warfare and of a forthcoming biography of King John. His book Blood Cries Afar: the Magna Carta War and the Invasion of England, 1215-17 was the first to investigate the major French invasion of England that resulted in the Battle of Lincoln. The Annual History Lecture was originally established to mark the work of Dr Jim Johnston, a historian and teacher at BGU who pioneered the use of probate inventories and who died in 2007. It also celebrates the contribution of another former history lecturer, Dulcie Duke, and recognises the work of current BGU students with the award of prizes. Attendance at the lecture is free of charge and refreshments are available at the Refectory and Curiositea nearby. Please note parking on campus is limited. The lecture begins at 2pm. To book a ticket contact Daisy Wedge by emailing daisy.wedge@bishopg.ac.uk or by calling 01522 585635. -
BGU Chef aiming to cook up a storm in national competition
Peter Glover, from the Refectory Kitchen Team at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), has been nominated to submit a recipe for the 2018 HIT Master Chef Competition as a part of his HIT Master Chef Apprenticeship. The recipe has to cover three specific requirements in creating a signature dish relevant to the menu at his place of work - Locality, Seasonality and Balance in composition and flavour and must include a 200 word Rationale of the Menu item/Ingredients used and how they have developed the dish. 12 contestants from each region will then be selected by a panel of judges, including HIT Chef Academy leads and industry professionals. These 12 apprentices will then go forward to regional cook-offs. The winners and runners up of each regional cook-off will go forward to the grand final, which will be held on Wednesday 6th June at Central Street Cookery School, St Luke’s, London. Here, the finalists will have just one hour to plan and five hours to cook their way to victory, with the chance to win the much-coveted HIT MasterChef trophy as well as a set of knives and other prizes. John Hodson, Operations Manager at BG Lincoln Ltd., was delighted for Peter and congratulated him on his achievement: “This is well deserved recognition for Peter as he looks to cement his skill set with a qualification through the Apprenticeship programme and we would like to wish him every success as the competition progresses.” More details of this year’s competition and what Peter is working towards can be found on the HIT Chef Academy website. -

How to make a rubbish trip brilliant
As part of the University’s wellbeing approach, Bishop Grosseteste University’s (BGU) Centre for Enhancement in Learning and Teaching organised a visit to Lincolnshire’s Energy from Waste facility for Geography students to help them see how they could create a sustainable campus. The waste facility (FCC Environment, Lincolnshire EFW visiting centre) is the largest in Europe and provides a sustainable, safe and affordable waste treatment solution and allows energy to be produced from waste which isn’t recycled or composted. The plant receives up to 190,000 tonnes of residual waste per year and uses the waste to generate electricity and other by product materials that can be used safely in road construction and recycling. During the trip students learnt why the facility is important due to its forward thinking attitude, low carbon footprint and ability to divert waste away from landfills along with how they could implement those qualities into their own activities both on and off campus. Mark Charlesworth, Associate Tutor for Geography at BGU, who accompanied the students said he found the trip an interesting and engaging opportunity: “The viewing facilities were fantastic. It is important to recognise that currently a large amount of waste is created by society and it is better to recover energy from waste with as little pollution as possible, and this plant demonstrated efficient waste disposal and energy creation” Claire Thomson, Head of the Centre for Enhancement in Learning and Teaching (CELT), discussed the wider benefits the trip could offer the BGU community: “This trip was a fantastic way for students and staff to raise their awareness of global sustainability and the role we can all play in this. In addition it builds on our ongoing work with the University’s wellbeing steering group to raise awareness of the importance of a sustainable campus” As part of these efforts to create a sustainable, mentally positive campus CELT and the wellbeing steering group have been working with the University’s Estates team to craft a series of quiet spaces across BGU. They have also collaborated with the Chaplaincy team on the ‘Blooming Marvellous’ project, and with BGSU and BG Lincoln ltd. on the drive to replace paper cups and plastic straws. Further improvements to its campus and facilities to reduce its carbon footprint and make the campus more sustainable carried out by BGU include: Initiatives include: Solar control glass to reflect the heat from the sun which results in a cooler, more comfortable, internal room temperature which in turn reduces the need for air-conditioning A rainwater harvesting system in the Library which reduces mains water usage A hot water solar system in the sports hall, BG Futures and the refectory which reduces gas consumption If you’d like to be a part of BGU’s drive to create a sustainable and positive campus you can join our student community by visiting our website, talking to our Enquiries Team or by coming along to one of our Open Days.
