The Matriculation Ceremony has now established itself as a tradition at BGU and is an annual feature on the University’s calendar, serving as an opportunity to officially welcome newly enrolled students to the BGU family.

Matriculation is the term used to describe students’ formal entry into the University and is described in the University’s Regulations as “the act of placing a student’s name upon the matricula roll of members of the University.”

This year’s Matriculation Ceremony will take place on Tuesday 8th October 2024.

Registration will open in due course and students will be contacted when they are able to register.

Unless you subject areas are making special arrangements for you to meet up before the ceremony, we are asking all new enrolling students to make their way to the Cathedral and be seated no later than 2:30pm.

Live Streaming

The ceremony is live streamed and can be watched via our YouTube channel.

Student Dress

Students are asked to dress smartly and will be provided with a Matriculation Gown free of charge. It is mandatory to wear these at this formal event.

The Ceremony

All newly enrolled students must be seated by 2.30pm then the ceremony starts with entry of the procession. A Representative of Lincoln Cathedral welcomes students to the Cathedral and the Matriculation Roll is formally endorsed by the Registrar on behalf of the University. The Vice-Chancellor will admit the students to the University and invites all students to ‘share the hand of friendship’. This is followed by speeches from the Vice Chancellor, Students’ Union President, Programme Leader for Theology, and Chaplain. Every student will be presented with a Matriculation badge during the ceremony.

Exit from the Cathedral

Students leave the Cathedral as directed by University marshals and exit via the Great West doors to the University. A traditional group photograph of Matriculating Students will be taken on the Dean's Green straight after the ceremony. The Academic Procession will lead back to campus via Exchequergate.

Guests are welcome to attend Matriculation free of charge and will be admitted to the Cathedral on a first come, first serve basis once all students are seated.
