What you will study

This module serves as an introduction to the fundamental concepts, principles, and practices of Project Management.

The aim of this module is thus to equip Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) with a solid foundation knowledge of project management methodologies, tools, and techniques essential for success in the field.

This module introduces the environments in which organisations operate and will equip Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) with the ability to understand and analyse the interrelatedness of organisations, projects and their environments.

PMAs will gain a foundational knowledge of the main UK business sectors and the parameters within which they operate (including the impacts of the green economy and sustainability including the UK Government’s policy of net carbon zero by 2050)

This module introduces Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) to the critical components of stakeholder and communication management essential for achieving successful project outcomes in today's complex and interconnected business landscape.

The aim of this module is thus to equip PMAs with the requisite knowledge to develop the skills and behaviours needed to effectively understand and manage stakeholders and stakeholder communications within an organisational context.

A professional project manager is an individual who possesses the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to effectively initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control, and close projects within an organisation. They are responsible for leading project teams and ensuring that project objectives are achieved on time, within scope, and within budget.

This module delves into the crucial aspects of project governance and financial control, exploring how to evaluate, establish, and maintain effective governance frameworks while managing project budgets and costs within appropriate financial frameworks. Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) will learn how to construct robust project business cases to demonstrate the anticipated benefits and value of project deliverables.

Through undertaking this module PMAs will come to understand the importance of project governance and financial control in ensuring project success.

This module builds on the knowledge base acquired at level 4 and focuses on Project Justification, Change Management and Change Control. The module introduces the skills needed to collaborate with project sponsors and within programmes, to ready organisations, teams, and individuals for change.

Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) will build on the skills employed in The Business Environment module in order to develop their skills set to assess the current situation, plan for a desired future state, and to outline steps to transition between the two. The skills developed will also complement those evaluated within the module The Professional Project Manager.

This module challenges Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) to consider the role of quality management and control within a project environment.

PMAs will explore key quality management frameworks, how to deliver quality and how to apply methodologies for risk evaluation and management.

The aim of this module is thus to equip PMAs with the requisite knowledge to develop the skills and behaviours needed to effectively manage project quality and risks within an organisational context.

This module tasks Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) to reflect on their own perspectives and experiences of working in organisations, exploring these within the context of becoming a professional Project Manager and leader.

The module delves into the theory of leadership and management, and the lived reality of leading and managing people as individuals and teams within an organisational context. Furthermore, this module challenges PMAs to explore the relationship between theory and practice, through their ability to apply and analyse leadership and management theory within an organisational context.

This module will enable PMAs to consolidate their knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of Project Management. The scheme of work for this module will reflect the International Project Management Association Level D syllabus.

Apprentices are required to achieve an International Project Management Association (IPMA) Level D qualification or equivalent, prior to taking the end point assessment. Equivalent qualifications for the IPMA Level D are APM’s Project Management Qualification, PMQ, is also acceptable as this is levelled as equivalent to the IPMA level D. Other qualifications also acceptable are Agile Project Management Practitioner (AgilePM); PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner; PRINCE2 Practitioner and PMI Project Management Professional (PMP).

The aim of this module is thus to equip Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) with the requisite knowledge to develop the skills and behaviours needed to effectively undertake the externally awarded IPMA (International Project Management Association) Level D certification.

This module equips Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) with the knowledge needed to effectively procure goods and services, manage projects within commercial and contractual frameworks, and understand the significance of supply chain management in the project environment.

The aim of this module is thus to equip PMAs with the requisite knowledge to develop the skills and behaviours needed to effectively maintain and evaluate different commercial contract and procurement types, to select appropriate options for specific programmes and projects, support effective contract management, and the achievement of programme and project outcomes.

This module prepares Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) for Gateway and End Point Assessment. Throughout the module and its associated assessment, apprentices will engage in practical exercises, case studies, and simulations to apply theoretical concepts to real-world project scenarios. By the end of the module, PMAs will have had the opportunity to consolidate their learning from their apprenticeship to date in a comprehensive toolkit of project management skills and competencies essential for success in their integrated degree apprenticeship and future careers as project managers.

The aim of this module is thus to provide Project Management Apprentices (PMAs) with an opportunity to consolidate, and reflect on, the knowledge, skills and behaviours they have developed throughout their apprenticeship.

This module will enable PMAs to demonstrate their understanding and acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required of a project manager. The module will culminate in an End Point Assessment (EPA)(work based project) where PMAs will evidence how these have been applied in a project environment within their organisation/immediate area of work.

This module will enable PMAs to demonstrate their understanding and acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required of a project manager. The module will culminate in an End Point Assessment (EPA) (Professional Review) where PMAs will evidence how these have been applied in a project environment within their organisation/immediate area of work. The professional review is assessed through a formal presentation followed by an interview.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this apprenticeship although an initial assessment will take place to ensure the apprenticeship is the most appropriate training programme for the individual and employer. Candidates will need to be resident in the UK and in employment (with at least 50% of the working hours in England). Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their Apprenticeship and employment role.

As a guide, candidates might have A Levels (or equivalent) or existing relevant level 3 qualifications.
