Congratulations on receiving an offer with BGU! If your offer is unconditional, we may still require verification of certain documents depending on your course (for example GCSEs). This verification can be necessary to meet the requirements of external representative bodies which accredit some of our courses. Depending on the content of the course, there may be other requirements that you will be asked to meet as part of your unconditional offer. For example, we will require students to complete a DBS check if they are enrolling onto a course which includes a compulsory placement.

ID and Right to Study checks

Prior to enrolment, we will contact you regarding how to complete an identification and Right to Study check. As part of this process, you will need to show evidence of your identity and immigration status so that the University can confirm your right to study in the UK. The documents you will need to evidence will depend on your immigration and fee status.

If you're from the UK, then we will simply need to see a copy of a valid passport to meet this condition of your offer. If you do not have a passport, there will be some additional documents that you can provide. The most common combination is a driving licence and student finance confirmation of entitlement letter, therefore we would encourage to obtain these documents before enrolment where possible.

If you're from the EU, EEA, are a Swiss national or are from a non-EEA country, we will provide guidance of the documentation that you will need to provide to us.

Proof of Change of Name

If any documents you present to the Admissions Team show a different name to the one shown on your official identification, we will need to see evidence of your change of name. Examples of the documents we are able to accept for this condition are as follows:

Marriage certificates

Change of name deeds

A letter confirming the change of name from a professional e.g. Solicitor or doctor

Children’s birth certificates (if previous and current names are shown)

DBS certificates (if previous and current names are shown)

However, if you have none of the above and/or have another document you think shows this evidence, please contact the Admissions Team and we can let you know if this would be acceptable.

Enhanced DBS Check (formally CRB)

If a DBS check is listed as a condition of your offer, you are required to obtain an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. To complete this check, we use an external provider verified by BGU. You will be required to complete an online form and take your chosen documents to a Post Office to be verified.

You will receive an email from the Admissions Team in Spring 2022 containing information on how to complete your DBS check through our provider. Please be mindful that we can only accept DBS checks completed through our external provider and we will not accept a check from another provider.

If you already have an enhanced DBS check and are part of the update service (you will pay a £13 subscription fee for this), we can potentially use this DBS to meet the course requirements. If you believe that you are part of the update service, we will ask you to complete a DBS Authorisation Form when we send out the DBS information.

If your permanent address is not in the UK or if you have lived outside of the UK for a year or more within the last 5 years, you will also be required to provide a Certificate of Good Conduct or Police Report from the relevant country.

The following courses require a DBS check as part of your offer:

Education Studies

Early Childhood Studies

Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion

Health and Social Care

You will need to complete a DBS check if any of your joint degree subjects are listed above (for example, Education Studies and English).

Pre-Enrolment Online Form

A few months before you are due to enrol, you will receive an email containing a link to a Pre-Enrolment Online Form. We require you to complete this form to tell us some more information about yourself, for example, where you will be living in term time, so that we can make the enrolment process as smooth as possible.

Other Useful Information

Health and Physical Capacity to Teach Assessment

For teacher training courses the Department for Education requires all applicants to complete a ‘Health and Physical Capacity to Teach’ assessment so that we can send you into school on placement. In order to assess this, we will send you a ‘Health and Physical Capacity to Teach’ questionnaire in Spring 2022. Once completed, the results will be sent to Lincoln County Hospital for processing. If you are considered ‘fit to teach’ then you will not hear from us, and we will update your student record accordingly. If more information is required as part of this process, you will be contacted directly by the hospital to discuss this.

There are often many myths surrounding Teacher Training courses, and to clear things up for you, BGU have compiled our most common myths into one place!

“I no longer have to complete the professional skills tests” TRUE – In July 2019, the Department of Education announced that the skills test would no longer be a requirement for trainees starting ITT courses. Instead, providers will make the own judgement to assess candidates literacy and numeracy skills.

“I have a grade D in my GCSE Maths, my offer says I need a grade C but because Admissions have not said anything to me, I am guessing everything is ok and I can enrol” – FALSE If you have successfully received a conditional offer to study a course leading to QTS, the conditions of this offer will be stated via UCAS track or DfE Apply. All offers for QTS courses state that GCSEs in English Language and Maths are required to be at a grade C/grade 4 or above (this also includes Science for Primary level). The Admissions Team will not inform you that you have not met this requirement prior to enrolment as we stress at interview that it is your responsibility to meet your conditions before you enrol. If you are worried about your grades or if your qualifications meet the GCSE requirements, please contact us as soon as possible.

“BGU will find my placement schools for me” – TRUE BGU differs from other Universities as our Placement Services Team will find your placements for you whilst you are on the course so that you don’t have to!

“I was told that I can do a DBS via the government website as it’s cheaper” – FALSEDBS checks should cost around £50-£60 to obtain and checks that are cheaper to obtain are usually a basic check and not an enhanced one. For all teacher training courses, you are required to hold an ENHANCED DBS check. Admissions will send out information on how to complete a DBS check via our external provider closer to enrolment. You must use our external provider to complete your DBS check as this will provide you with the correct DBS for your course and we can also check the status of your DBS online.

“I have a DBS check already, and I am going to use that to meet the DBS condition of my offer” – BOTH TRUE AND FALSE You can only use a DBS check that you already have if it is enhanced, for the appropriate workforce, and is part of the update service. To be part of the update service you will pay an annual subscription fee of £13. This allows your DBS to be transferrable between organisations. You can only sign up for the update service within 30 days of obtaining your DBS certificate. If you are not a part of the update service then you will need to complete a new DBS check via our external provider. If you have a DBS check through an organisation or school it is unlikely that they will have paid for your DBS to be part of the update service.
