Shaun Thompson

Shaun joined Bishop Grosseteste University in January 2015, initially on secondment from his current role as head teacher of Clough and Risegate Community Primary School. He took up a permanent, full time position with the University in September 2015. During his employment in schools, he has worked closely with trainee teachers and been involved in collaborative working with other local primary schools. His expertise are in special education, particularly autism, where he has taught students with autism in both mainstream and special education settings; also, he has a background in science, which he studied as an undergraduate. Shaun works across programmes, although primarily on the postgraduate team. He leads the School Direct Programme for primary trainees and works closely with both the trainees and partnership schools/clusters within this role. Teaching Shaun primarily contributes to the PGCE Primary programmes, with a particular specialism in maths, science, assessment and special educational needs, although some teaching is also carried out across the undergraduate programmes.

Shaun’s Master's Degree focused on the teaching of social interaction and play to students on the autistic spectrum, and his current Ed.D. research is looking into the effectiveness of the National Curriculum 2014 to promote mastery in mathematics and inclusion for students on the autistic spectrum, within mainstream settings.
